Steelers safety Kameron Kelly returns an interception during practice Monday, July 29, 2019 at St. Vincent College.

Just five months after the league folded, Alliance of American Football alum Kameron Kelly is expected to start in his first career NFL game.

Kelly could replace the injured Sean Davis, who is out with an ankle injury, at free safety for the Pittsburgh Steelers against the New England Patriots on Sunday night at Gillette Stadium.

Davis missed seven games as a rookie, but started all 16 regular-season games in 2017 and the first 15 of last season before missing the finale against Cincinnati with a quad injury.

Davis was one of seven players the Steelers made inactive against the Patriots, including four rookies: defensive lineman Isaiah Buggs, quarterback Joshua Dobbs, tight end Zach Gentry, offensive lineman Fred Johnson and cornerback Justin Layne and offensive lineman Chuks Okorafor.

That’s a big development, as the Steelers went with only two tight ends, Vance McDonald and Xavier Grimble, and that it also indicates that Zach Banner has moved ahead of Okorafor as the swing tackle and tight end in jumbo packages.

The Patriots made cornerback Joejuan Williams, defensive back Obi Melifonwu, wide receiver Demaryius Thomas, running back Damien Harris, offensive lineman Korey Cunningham, linebacker Kyle Van Noy and defensive lineman Byron Cowart inactive.
