Westmoreland County campus clippings: Spencer Lee makes return to mat

Spencer Lee is back.

The Iowa redshirt senior out of Franklin Regional made his season debut and the nation’s top-ranked 125-pounder posted a 16-5 major decision over Corey Cabanban of Iowa State, recording two takedowns and two four-point near falls to open a 12-2 lead. He finished with 1:23 of riding time.

The victory stretched his winning streak to 39. Lee missed most of last season after having surgery on both knees.

Wrestling

Pitt: Redshirt senior Micky Phillippi (Derry) blanked his opponent at 133 pounds to move to 3-1 on the season, and 77-17 for his career, as the 20th-ranked Panthers sneaked by Columbia, 19-18. Phillippi is ranked No. 9 in his weight class.

Seton Hill: Freshman Kane Kettering was named the PSAC Wrestling Athlete of the Week. The 174-pounder upset Ethan Baney, the No. 3-ranked wrestler in the region, as the Griffins fell to Kutztown, 24-22. He pinned Baney in 1:08.

Women’s basketball

Seton Hill: It was three up and three down, all told a successful trip for the Griffins to Puerto Rico. The women won all three games at the Porta Del Sol Shootout in Mayaguez to move to 8-3.

After a 74-53 win over Puerto Rico-Mayaguez, the Griffins defeated Puerto Rico-Bayamon, 74-61. In the win, grad student Alie Seto had 16 points and eight rebounds, freshman Hallie Cowan added 13 points, senior Courtney Tomas had 12, and freshman Helene Cowan chipped in 10 and six assists.

The Griffins made 10 3-pointers.

A 73-24 win over Inter American capped the trip as 13 Griffins scored in double figures, led by Nufi Nemale with 11 points.

Football

Ohio Dominican: Fifth-year kicker Dom DiFalco (Franklin Regional) started a school-record 44 games in his career. This season, he made 21 of 21 extra points, and 5 of 9 field goals for 36 points. For his career, DiFalco made 20 of 31 field goals, with a long of 49 yards, and 121 of 125 extra points for 181 points.

Saint Vincent: Junior return specialist Molayo Irefin was selected to the D3football.com All District 2 First Team. Irefin led the PAC in kick (27.2) and punt (15.8) return average. He had a 100-yard touchdown return in a win over Waynesburg.

Transfer portal: Graduate safety Robert Kennedy (Jeannette) picked up his second Power 5 scholarship offer since entering the transfer portal out of Old Dominion. North Carolina State offered, following Boston College.

Washington & Jefferson: Junior linebacker Justin Johns (Franklin Regional) was named to the D3football.com All-Region third team. Also an All-PAC first-team pick, Johns led the conference with 102 tackles (9.3 per game).

William & Mary: Junior safety Marcus Barnes (Jeannette) had five tackles but the Tribe saw its season end in a 55-7 loss to Montana State in the NCAA FCS quarterfinals. No. 5 seed William & Mary finished 11-2 after reaching the quarters for the first time since 2009. Barnes finished second on the team with 66 tackles and had two interceptions.

Men’s soccer

Westminster: Grad student Tyler Caterino (Monessen) was named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Region VII Second Team. A midfielder, Caterino had 12 goals and nine assists for a PAC-leading 33 points this season. He also was an All-PAC First Team selection. In 86 career games, Caterino had 26 goals and 12 assists for 64 points.
