Westmoreland County campus clippings: Saint Vincent's Shemar Bennett hits scoring milestone

He scored the first nine points of the game for Saint Vincent and delivered a one-handed dunk.

But the basket Shemar Bennett will remember most from a recent victory is the one that put him in the Bearcats’ record book.

The 6-foot-6 grad student forward scored on a layup through the lane with 2 minutes, 50 seconds remaining in the first half for his 1,000th career point as SVC defeated Penn State Fayette, 77-60.

Bennett finished with a game-high 25 points and became the 35th player in program history to score 1,000.

Men’s basketball

Carlow: Sophomore guard Riley Comforti (Southmoreland) was named the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Division I (NAIA) Player of the Week.

He averaged 19 points and 9 rebounds over three games, including a 23-point performance against La Roche.

West Liberty: Junior Bryce Butler (Latrobe) was named the Mountain East Conference Player of the Week. He erupted for 33 points and scored the game-winning basket as the fourth-ranked Hilltoppers (9-0, 6-0 MEC) edged No. 21 West Virginia State, 91-89.

He posted his third double-double of the season with 25 points and 10 rebounds in a win over Charleston.

Butler is averaging 23.4 points and 7.4 rebounds and is shooting 62% from the field.

Women’s basketball

Chatham: Freshman forward Alyssa Laukus (Norwin) was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week. Laukus had 17 points and seven rebounds in a loss to Saint Vincent, and added 14 points and seven rebounds in a win over Wooster.

Grove City: Senior guard Megan Kallock (Greensburg Salem) scored a game-high 30 points to lead the Wolverines to a 73-67 win over Bethany in PAC action.

Marian: Junior guard Jayla Wehner (Norwin) contributed four points, three assists and two rebounds off the bench in a 71-63 win for the No. 8 Knights over Huntingdon.

Marian moved to 10-1 overall and 4-0 in the Crossroads League.

Pitt-Greensburg: The Bobcats made it three straight wins after an 0-6 start as they downed Waynesburg, 59-42.

Three players scored in double figures for UPG (3-6): Senior Sidney McCully with 16 points, freshman Kayla Hoehler with 14 and sophomore Melina Maietta (Greensburg Central Catholic) with 13.

Point Park: Senior forward Jordan Yaniga (Franklin Regional) scored a game-high 16 points, making 6 of 9 shots, and dished five assists to pace the Pioneers to a one-sided, 109-36 victory over CCAC-Allegheny.

Saint Vincent: The Bearcats made it four wins in five games with a 62-42 victory over Allegheny. Emily Thompson had 15 points, Lizze Bender added 11 points and Madison Weber had eight points and 12 rebounds for SVC (6-3, 5-2 PAC).

Seton Hill: The Griffins (6-3) turned a vacation into a business trip, winning their first of three games at the Porta Del Sol Shootout in Puerto Rico.

Freshman Helene Cowan had 16 points, while her twin sister, Hallie, and grad student Alie Seto added 15 each to lead Seton Hill to a 74-53 win over UPR-Mayaguez.

Helene Cowan added six assists.

Westmoreland County Community College: Sophomore Makayla Boda scored 25 points, and sophomore Chloe Willochell (Latrobe) and freshman Makayla Lander (Hempfield) had 12 apiece to lead the Wolfpack past Lorain Community College, 64-61.

Boda and Willochell also grabbed 10 rebounds.

Men’s cross country

Westmoreland County Community College: Sophomore Dante Frescura (Latrobe) earned his second straight National Junior College Cross Country Coaches Association All-American designation.
