Westmoreland County campus clippings: Saint Vincent's Jaden Gales named ECAC's top rookie
Saint Vincent freshman basketball player Jaden Gales continues to reap the benefits of a dazzling debut season.
Gales was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Rookie of the Year, and also garnered All-ECAC Second Team honors.
Previously, the 6-foot-6 forward was tabbed the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year and made the conference first team.
He is the first player in Bearcats’ history to earn the ECAC’s top rookie award.
Gales averaged 17.2 points, which was third in the PAC, and started all 26 games. He also grabbed 7.5 rebounds.
Women’s basketball
Illinois-Springfield: First-year guard Brianna Zajicek (Norwin) was named to the Great Lakes Valley Conference all-freshman team. Zajicek led all freshmen in the conference in scoring at 12.8 points per game.
Women’s swimming
IUP: Grad student Michell Lopes (Franklin Regional) made the All-PSAC second team with the 800-yard freestyle relay.
Freshman Jordan Crupie (Hempfield) made the second team with the 400 medley relay.
Men’s track and field
Allegheny: Junior Jake Boord (Hempfield) placed 15th in the javelin at the Raleigh Relays at North Carolina State with a throw of 59.24 meters.
Boord was named the PAC Field Athlete of the Week last week after winning a title at the Stan Romanowski Open.
The two-time conference champion only needed one throw to claim victory, a throw that sailed 62.62 meters for a program record.
Duquesne: Freshman Joe Klanchar (Belle Vernon) took home seventh place in the javelin with a mark of 48.40 meters at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational.
Saint Vincent: Freshman Brady Sundin ran to victory in the 10,000-meter run at the Bethany Invitational with a time of 33 minutes and 16 seconds.
Teammate John Syms, a sophomore, added a win in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Seton Hill: Freshman Angelo Allen won the shot put at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational with a throw of 15.31 meters, tying a program record.
Senior Hunter Martin (Belle Vernon) won the 110-meter hurdles title at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational. His time was 14.58 seconds.
Westminster: Senior Ryan Beard (Franklin Regional) placed seventh in the 100-meter dash at the Bethany Invitational in a time of 10.98 seconds.
Women’s track and field
Arizona: Junior Mackenna Orie (Hempfield) finished second in the discus at the Willie Williams Classic in Tuscon with a distance of 50.33 meters (165 feet, 1 inch).
Cal (Pa.): Junior Malia Anderson (Greensburg Salem) ran a PSAC-qualifying time of 2:17.32 in the 800-meter run at the Bethany Invitational.
Carlow: Grad student Olivia Miller (Ligonier Valley) broke her own school record in the triple jump with a mark of 10.92 meters to take fourth place at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational.
She also was 16th in the javelin.
Last month, Miller competed in the NAIA Indoor Championship in South Dakota.
Clarion: Senior Jenna Uncapher (Hempfield) finished 11th in the 400-meter run at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational in a time of 1:2.34.
Duquesne: Junior Sadie Wetzel (Latrobe) won gold in the high jump at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational, clearing 1.69 meters for the fourth-best jump in program history.
Junior Hannah Seitzinger (Belle Vernon) ran the fifth-fastest time in school history, at 55.25 seconds, to win the 400 meters. She also teamed with junior Faith Mucci (Latrobe) to win the 1,600-meter relay in 3:38.17.
Robert Morris: Sophomore Rayna Todero (Franklin Regional) picked up a bronze medal at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational with a long jump of 4.97 meters.
Saint Vincent: The Bearcats’ 400-meter relay team set a school record at the Bethany Invitational with a time of 62.93 seconds.
Freshman Kristen Prince also established a new program mark of 40:15 in the 10,000-meter run. She was named the PAC Rookie of the Week.
Men’s volleyball
Saint Vincent: Senior Matt Minkin put down 10 kills and 15 digs to help push the Bearcats past Wells Express, 3-0.
Thiel: Freshman Tyler Hussey (Norwin) had a game-high 10 kills to lead the Tomcats to a 3-0 sweep of Wells Express.
Women’s tennis
Pitt-Greensburg: Freshman Elle Pawlikowsky (Southmoreland) won at No. 6 singles as the Bobcats swept past Geneva, 9-0, to open the spring season.
UPG is coming off its second straight AMCC title.
Men’s golf
Washington & Jefferson: Sophomore Cade Patterson (Penn-Trafford) tied for first at the Cardinal Spring Classic at Black Rock Golf Course in Hagerstown, Md.
Patterson shot a pair of 70s for a 36-hole total of 140.
Wrestling
Seton Hill: Junior heavyweight John Meyers (Greensburg Salem) made the All-PSAC First Team after winning a regional title and qualifying for the national tournament. He finished 15-3 with four pins.
Women’s lacrosse
Saint Vincent: Senior midfielder Kayle Bandow collected eight points, including the 100th goal of her career, as the Bearcats defeated Mount Aloysius, 19-5.
Bandown finished with six goals, on 10 shots, and two assists.
Attacker Carolina Walters was named the PAC Freshman of the Week. She had 13 points (6 goals, 7 assists) over three games. She had four goals and four assists in a win over Waynesburg.
Seton Hill: Senior Elizabeth Tamasitis had three goals and an assist, and junior Piper Conlan added two goals, as the Griffins moved to 3-0 with a 15-4 victory against Gannon.
Another highlight of the match: Sophomore Megan Bunker won her 300th draw control of her career.
Conlan was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week.
Waynesburg: Senior Eve O’Sullivan (Latrobe) registered four goals and an assist, and senior Rachel Caldwell (Ligonier Valley) scored a goal in a 23-12 loss to Saint Vincent.
Men’s lacrosse
Seton Hill: Senior attacker Jeremy Sforzo (offense) and sophomore Holden Charboneau (defense) were named the Great Midwest Athletic Conference players of the week.
Storzo had four goals and seven assists over two wins, while Charboneau caused three turnovers and had three ground balls.
Women’s bowling
Saint Vincent: Senior Olivia Emmonds was named the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Bowler of the Week. She averaged 187.6 for the week, including an 18.93 in Baker format and a game-high 208 against Morgan State.
