Westmoreland County campus clippings: Saint Vincent women's bowlers enter national rankings

Saint Vincent has a nationally ranked women’s bowling team.

For the first time, the Bearcats are listed among the best teams in the National Tenpin Coaches Association Division II/III National Poll.

SVC (31-2) checked in a No. 13 in the latest poll.

The Bearcats’ .939 winning percentage is the top mark in the country across all divisions.

Five Bearcats rolled scores of 170 or better as the team went 9-1 at the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Round Robin earlier this month in Greensburg. Freshman Abby Justice led with a 184.5, followed by senior Olivia Emmonds (182.7), junior Monique Koehler (182.3), junior Jackie Koehler (181.8), sophomore Sabine Strickland (175.8) and graduate student Mercedes Belch (171.3).

The team hosted the Br. Patrick Lacey, O.S.B., Memorial Tournament over the weekend. The event, named after the late SVC men’s bowling coach who won the college’s lone national championship in 1976, saw the team post a single-match record score of 1,014 in a win over Daemen.

Koehler threw a 254 and Strickland 220.

Men’s volleyball

Saint Vincent: The Bearcats posted their second straight AMCC win, downing visiting Hilbert, 3-1, as freshman Zebadiah Wyant racked up 17 kills and 17 digs. Senior Matthew Minkin added 17 kills, and freshman Zach Wyant tallied 44 assists and 12 digs in the victory.

Thiel: Freshman Tyler Hussey (Norwin) had six kills as the Tomcats defeated Wells Express, 3-0. In the next match, sophomore JC Govannucci (Norwin) had a team-high 12 kills and four blocks in 3-2 win over Penn State Altoona.

Men’s indoor track and field

Cal (Pa.): Senior Mason Jobe (Greensburg Salem) ran a personal-best time of 4 minutes, 25.94 seconds in the mile to reach the conference standard at the D-II Pre-National Invitational hosted by Norfolk State.

Grove City: Junior Gabe Dunlap (Penn-Trafford) finished third in the long jump, in 20 feet, and was fourth in the high jump (5 feet, 7 inches) at the Baldwin Wallace February meet.

Saint Vincent: Senior Joey Bujdos broke a five-year-old record in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:54.25 at the Boston University Valentine Invitational.

Women’s indoor track and field

Saint Vincent: Freshman Kristen Prince broke her program record in the 5,000 meters, running the race in 18:24.57 at the Boston University Valentine Invitational. Prince topped her previous mark by 12 seconds.

Men’s lacrosse

Seton Hill: With a 25-4 victory in their season opener, the Griffins are primed for another strong season. Sophomore Connor Zostant had three goals and three assists, freshman Cole Bordo added four goals, junior Demetri Yerou had two goals and three assists and redshirt sophomore Noah VandeWater and freshman Gavin Erickson scored three times against Alderson Broaddus.

Men’s tennis

Penn State: Sophomore Loren Byers (Greensburg) picked up wins at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles as the Nittany Lions (8-1) held back Princeton, 4-3. Byers and teammate Sam Bossem have eight straight doubles wins.

Softball

Bowling Green: Freshman outfielder Katie Hutter (Mt. Pleasant) has two hits and an RBI early in the season. She drove in a run with a single in a 7-2 victory over Valparaiso.

Ohio: Sophomore catcher Emma Hoffner (Hempfield) had two hits in a 10-2 win over Austin Peay.

Robert Morris: Junior pitcher Jane Garver (Ligonier Valley) picked up her first win, in relief, as the Colonials defeated Austin Peay, 3-2. Junior Faith Miller (Southmoreland) went 2 for 3 with an RBI.
