Westmoreland County campus clippings: Pitt-Greensburg hitters fuel strong start

Pitt-Greensburg knows how to put the business-end of the bat on the baseball.

The highest-scoring team in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, the Bobcats have piled up 150 runs, which is 45 more than second-place Hilbert.

UPG (11-3) has scored double-digit runs seven times, even racking up 27 in a game earlier in the season.

As a team, the Bobcats are slashing .370/.459/.497, have 142 RBIs, and have been caught stealing once.

There were five players hitting over .400, including freshman Colin Solinski (.541), freshman James Domer (.474), freshman Ben Aftanas (.453), senior Jace Cappellini (.426) and senior Randy Hubbard (.414).

Domer had a league-leading 33 RBIs, while Aftanas had crossed the plate 24 times.

Freshman Nathan Mankoski’s minuscule 0.35 ERA also was on top of the AMCC. He is 4-0 and has 33 strikeouts in 26 innings.

He was named the AMCC Pitcher of the Week for a second time.

Baseball

Allegheny: Senior Sullivan Schueltz (Ligonier Valley) helped the Gators to an upset win.

He homered, drove in two runs and scored three times as the Gators scooted past No. 3 Baldwin Wallace, 7-4.

Senior Bobby Kusinsky (Penn-Trafford) was named the PAC Pitcher of the Week after he did not allow an earned run over eight innings in a 3-1 win over Franciscan.

Grove City: Junior second baseman Lucca Baccari (Penn-Trafford) delivered a two-run single and finished 2 for 3 with three runs scored in a 16-2 win over La Roche.

Mercyhurst: A few local players took part in the longest baseball game of their lives.

Mercyhurst outlasted Slippery Rock, 2-1, in 20 innings, in a the first game of a doubleheader that went so long, they had to postpone the second.

Four Norwin grads, all sophomores, endured the marathon with Mercyhurst.

Eric Chorba, Landon DiBeradin, Jayden Walker each had a hit, and Jake Bazala started and tossed six innings, allowing a run in the top of the sixth.

The teams combined to use 13 pitchers, had 106 at-bats, and left 33 on base.

Mount St. Mary’s: Sophomore Nick Fleming (Norwin) has played in seven games this season and is 3 for 8 with two RBIs.

Freshman Ty Stecko (Norwin) has the same number of appearances, but is looking for his first college hit.

Seton Hill: The Griffins swept a four-game weekend series against Cal (Pa.), winning the second game in dramatic fashion, as senior Owen Sabol (Norwin) ripped a one-out, walk-off single for a 5-4 victory.

Sophomore Drew Garth cracked a two-run homer in the sixth to make it 4-4.

In a 12-4 win in the first game, sophomore Max Mandler, Vinny Rauso, Jack Oberdorf, senior Braden Durham and junior Aidan Shephard (Norwin) had two hits apiece.

Seton Hill played its 1,000th game Sunday (Game 3) and won, 13-6, behind Sabol’s career day. He went 4 for 5 with two doubles, a grand slam and seven RBIs.

A 4-0 victory followed for the sweep as Brandon Bergert struck out nine across six shutout innings.

Washington & Jefferson: Senior Tyler Horvat (Penn-Trafford) was named to the D3baseball.com Team of the Week after he pitched a one-hit shutout and struck out eight in a 10-0 PAC win over Geneva.

He reached base in all nine plate appearances in the doubleheader, and scored five runs.

For his career, the dependable utility man is 21-3 with a 2.14 ERA.

Horvat had a pair of run-scoring singles and finished with three hits and two RBIs in a 12-7 victory over Keuka in Davenport, Fla.

Junior infielder Connor Helm (Franklin Regional) ripped a two-run, walk-off single to lift the Presidents to a 5-4 win over Wooster in eight innings.

There were two outs when he stepped to the plate for the first time in the game.

Horvat had two hits in the win.

Waynesburg: Junior third baseman Mike Bell (Yough) went 3 for 4 and scored a run as the Yellow Jackets fell to Wilson, 8-4.

Westminster: Junior second baseman Donnie Shimko (Latrobe) doubled and scored a pair of runs, but the Titans fell to Pitt-Greensburg, 13-12.

Softball

Bloomsburg: Sophomore Callie Sowers (Hempfield) was named the PSAC East Pitcher of the Week. She picked up three wins and struck out 32 in 21.1 innings pitched while giving up three earned runs. Sowers threw a nine-inning complete game against Mansfield, striking out 11.

The sophomore’s week featured a pair of wins during a doubleheader against Mansfield, and a nine-inning complete game against Shepherd that saw the right-hander strike out 11 hitters.

She also tied a career high with 14 Ks against the Mounties.

Cal (Pa.): Junior outfielder Charity Henderson (Southmoreland) launched a grand slam, the first of her college career, in a 10-2 victory over Pitt-Johnstown.

Henderson added two hits and three RBIs in a 10-8 loss to Mercyhurst.

Fairmont State: In 10 games, sophomore Jordan Novak (Latrobe) was hitting .500 (6 for 12) with five RBIs. Another local sophomore, Liz Waszkiewicz (Norwin), had a double and four RBIs in 11 plate appearances.

John Carroll: Infielder Jess Lichota (Penn-Trafford) is having a solid junior season so far for the Blue Streaks.

Through nine games, she was hitting .429 with two doubles, two RBIs, and three runs scored.

Her teammate, Kaylyn Odelli (Yough), a sophomore catcher and utility player, had a .308 average over 12 starts, with a team-best 12 hits, eight runs and six RBIs.

Muskingum: Hannah Dobrinick (Penn-Trafford) remains active in the college game, despite completing her career at Otterbein, where she was a three-year starter.

She is now an assistant coach with the Fighting Muskies.

Ohio: Sophomore catcher Emma Hoffner (Hempfield) is hitting .344 with 10 runs and eight RBIs over 24 games for the Bobcats.

In her last five games, she is 9 for 15 with four RBIs and five runs scored.

Penn State: Fifth-year pitcher Bailey Parshall (Belle Vernon) recorded her 700th strikeout of her collegiate career in the Nittany Lions’ 1-0 win over Pitt.

Parshall allowed three hits in an eight-inning complete game and struck out 11.

Pikeville: Junior Carolyn Alincic (Mt. Pleasant) pitched eight innings and allowed three hits and one earned run as Upike defeated Campbellsville, 2-1.

Alincic struck out eight and walked two to improve to 6-4 for the season.

Robert Morris: Junior Jane Garver (Ligonier Valley) gave up five hits in 6 2/3 innings but fell in a pitchers’ duel to Akron, 2-1.

Another local player, fifth-year pitcher Dana Vatakis (Monessen) recorded her second complete-game win of the season, allowing five hits with five strikeouts and one walk in a 6-0 shutout of Green Bay.

Saint Vincent: Nicolette Kloes was named the PAC Freshman of the Week. She went 9 for 20 with three doubles, six RBIs, and nine runs as the Bearcats won 4 of 6 games. She went 3 for 4 with two doubles and four RBIs against Penn State DuBois.

Seton Hill: The Griffins opened Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader sweep of Clarion by scores of 9-2 and 9-5.

Junior Lauren Dellett pitched a complete game in the opener, striking out 11, while freshman Kylie Hegland had three hits and three RBIs.

In the second game, junior Mackenzie Zang went 4 for 4 with two runs, and sophomore Grace Paredes had three RBIs.

Dellett was named the PSAC West Pitcher of the Week.

Towson: Senior first baseman Emma Armstrong (Penn-Trafford) tripled for her second extra-base hit of the season, but Towson fell to Villanova, 7-5.

The Griffins picked up a thrilling, 2-1 win over Mercyhurst as sophomore Brooke Cleland (Penn-Trafford) delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Cleland struck again — on the same day, in the same doubleheader — with a walk-off three-run home run in a 6-5 win over Mercyhurst.

The Griffins trailed, 6-5.

Both of Cleland’s hits were home runs.

Westminster: Sophomore pitcher Sydney Lokay (Norwin) picked up her first college win as she struck out four and walked two in four innings of an 11-0 triumph over Pitt-Bradford in five innings.
