Penn-Trafford grad Cade Patterson competed at the 2023 NCAA Division III championship.

When he left Penn-Trafford to begin a college golf career, Cade Patterson never could have imagined he would have his name etched in a program’s record book.

Patterson, a sophomore at Washington & Jefferson, made school history when he carded the best finish by a Presidents’ player at the NCAA Division III championship.

At 1-under-par 287, Patterson tied for ninth at the four-round tournament at Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Ky.

Solid, bookend rounds helped him crack the top 10.

After he was tied for the lead after the opening 18 with a 68, Patterson followed with rounds of 75, 77 and 67.

The 5-under final round, which saw him make six birdies and 11 pars, allowed him to move up 21 spots and finish higher than W&J Hall of Famer Michael Grasso, who was 22nd in the 2007 finals.

Men’s golf

Notre Dame: Senior Palmer Jackson (Franklin Regional) tied for 20th at the NCAA Bath Regional at Eagle Eye Golf Club in East Lansing, Mich. Jackson shot 1-under 212 with rounds of 70, 68, and 74.

Men’s track and field

Allegheny: Junior thrower Jake Boord (Hempfield) qualified to compete in the NCAA Division III championships set for later this week at St. John Fisher in Pittsford, N.Y.

Boord will make his second trip to nationals in the javelin. The Gators’ record holder has the sixth-farthest throw in the nation at 64.76 meters. The three-time conference champion is seeking All-American honors.

Boord was named to the NCAA Division III All-Great Lakes Region Team for the third straight year.

Grove City: Junior Gabe Dunlap (Penn-Trafford) won the decathlon in record-breaking fashion at the All-Atlantic Region Track and Field Conference Championships at Susquehanna University. His final total of 5,837 points set a program record after he won the 100-meter dash (11.36 seconds) and javelin (194 feet, 5 inches). Dunlap also was fifth in the open javelin (183-9).

Saint Vincent: Senior Joe Bujdos was selected to the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Region list after his efforts in the 800-meter run. Bujdos ran a personal-record of 1 minute, 51.97 seconds at the West Virginia Last Chance Meet, the third-fastest time in the Mid-Atlantic Region. He took second at the PAC championships and was fifth at the All-Atlantic Region championships.

Women’s track and field

Cal (Pa.): Junior Malia Anderson (Greensburg Salem) was named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Atlantic Region list in the 800. Anderson’s time of 2:10.67 was the best in the region. She repeated as the PSAC 800 champion.

Carlow: Grad student Olivia Miller (Ligonier Valley) will compete for a fifth time at the NAIA championships this week in Marion, Ind. Her event is the triple jump. She qualified with a winning and school-record mark of 11.60 meters at the Robert Morris Mid-Week Bonanza last month.

Miller holds program records in the triple, high and long jumps, along with indoor marks in all three jumps, as well as with the shot put and pentathlon. Miller is a three-time NAIA All-American.

Clarion: Another U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Atlantic Region selection is senior Jenna Uncapher (Hempfield). Uncapher put together the best heptathlon performance in school history with a score of 4,501 points, breaking a record set in 2008.

Waynesburg: Junior Megan Barry (Norwin) finished seventh in the javelin with a toss of 36.08 meters at the Mount Union Last Chance Meet.
