Westmoreland campus clippings: Latrobe grad Biss picks up honors for Shippensburg
Shippensburg basketball standout Jake Biss had a career season, and his efforts were recognized.
The junior from Latrobe was named to the Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) All-Atlantic Region First Team.
Biss, who was the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division Athlete of the Year, was the point guard for the Raiders, who finished 24-7 and were set to be the No. 4 seed in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region before the NCAA canceled the tournament because of the coronavirus.
Biss averaged 16.5 points and 4.5 assists and shot 42.4% from 3-point range. He had 10 games with 20 or more points, including 32 against Virginia Union.
He had eight games with six or more assists.
Women’s basketball
Saint Vincent: Junior guard Jenna Lafko was named to the D3Hoops.com All-Great Lakes Region Second Team. Lafko, the PAC player of the year and an All-PAC first-teamer this season, averaged 13.8 points, 4.6 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 3.0 steals for the Bearcats.
Baseball
Washington & Jefferson: Freshman Tyler Horvat (Penn-Trafford) pitched eight shutout innings in his first college start as W&J defeated No. 6 Washington of St. Louis, 8-0. He allowed five hits, struck out four and walked two over eight innings.
Horvat was named PAC Pitcher of the Week and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division III Rookie of the Week.
Men’s lacrosse
Seton Hill: Senior attacker Logan Maloni was named to the USILA Division II Team of the Week. Maloni had nine goals and two assists over a pair of wins against Roberts Wesleyan and Georgian Court, the latter of which ended up being the team’s last game of the season after it was canceled because of the coronavirus.
Maloni had five goals in a 12-3 win over RWC, all in the first half. He had two goals in each half against Georgian.
Softball
Bethany: Senior Erica Amaroso (Belle Vernon) finished her career with 102 hits.
Penn State: Sophomore pitcher Bailey Parshall (Belle Vernon) struck out 12 for her fifth double-digit strikeout game of the season, but the Nittany Lions fell 1-0 against South Florida.
