Westmoreland County campus clippings: Latrobe grad Kiley Myers named MAAC pitcher of the week
Senior Kiley Myers was known for her aggressiveness and speed from the pitching circle when she played at Latrobe.
Those traits followed her to college softball at Marist.
Myers recently earned the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week after winning three straight starts.
She pitched a three-hit shutout against Canisius, needing only 57 pitches in the five-inning game. She struck out five and surrendered five hits in a 7-3 win over Niagara.
Myers moved to 4-4 for the 14-19 Red Foxes, and had a 2.25 ERA — eighth best in the conference — with 40 strikeouts and 12 walks in 62 1/3 innings.
Softball
Cal (Pa.): Junior Charity Henderson (Southmoreland) has started 26 games for the Vulcans. She was hitting .325 with eight doubles, three home runs and 22 RBIs.
Carlow: In 30 games, senior Morgan Nedley (Penn-Trafford) was hitting .371 with six doubles, and was leading the team with 19 runs scored and 18 RBIs.
Mercyhurst: Junior Morgan Hilty (Penn-Trafford) improved to 9-5 with a complete-game win over Edinboro.
She allowed five hits and one earned run in a 2-1 victory.
Ohio: Sophomore catcher Emma Hoffner (Hempfield) has played a key role in the Bobcats’ 10-game winning streak. Hoffner has had a hit in nine of the 10 games, going 11 for 31 with five runs and 11 RBIs. She also had a home run and a double during the run.
For the season, Hoffner is hitting .348 with 32 hits, second most on the team, to go with four doubles, three triples, 14 runs and 19 RBIs.
Pikeville: Junior Carolyn Alincic (Mt. Pleasant) was 6-7 in 14 appearances, with a 4.55 ERA, seven complete games and a team-best 93 strikeouts.
Pitt-Greensburg: Melanie Mienke pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts and one walk, limiting Saint Vincent to four hits, in a 7-3 victory, the third straight win for the Bobcats.
Senior Kayla Santucci (Burrell) went 3 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs, junior Kacey Weller added three hits, junior Madison Stonbraker homered, and senior Haley Liccketo had two hits, including a triple, and two RBIs.
Robert Morris: Junior Jane Garver (Ligonier Valley) tied her career high with 10 strikeouts and gave up three hits in a 5-0 win over Norse.
Saint Vincent: Sophomores Meghan Braun and Olivia Bushore combined to no-hit Pitt-Greensburg in the second game of a nonconference doubleheader.
SVC won 9-1 in five innings.
Most of the work went to Bushore, who took over in the bottom of the first and worked out of a bases-loaded jam. She struck out seven and walked two to improve to 3-2.
Offensively, freshman Nicolette Kloes had two doubles, while juniors Olivia Persin (Hempfield) and Jessica LaPorte had one apiece.
Junior Haley Bicko added a home run and drove in three. LaPorte had two RBIs.
Persin and Kloes each scored three runs for the Bearcats (17-7, 7-1 PAC). Persin collected her 100th career hit.
Bushore was named the PAC Pitcher of the Week.
Seton Hill: Sophomore Brooke Cleland (Penn-Trafford) hit a two-run home run and drove in three runs, sophomore Bre Athey tripled, and Lauren Dellett earned a save as the Griffins picked up a 3-2 win over IUP to split a doubleheader.
Westminster: Sophomore Sydney Lokay (Norwin) doubled and scored in a 7-1 victory over Bethany.
She added another hit in a 3-0 win in the second game of the doubleheader.
Lokay, a third baseman, has played in all 22 games and has two home runs, eight RBIs and 12 runs scored.
She also has four appearances in the pitching circle and is 1-0 with a 1.40 ERA.
Baseball
Allegheny: Senior Sullivan Schueltz (Ligonier Valley) went 3 for 4 with an RBI in a 12-1 win over Houghton.
He had four hits in six at-bats in the doubleheader. He scored twice in a 4-2 win.
Cal (Pa.): Freshman Jake Kramer (Hempfield) earned his third save of the season as the Vulcans defeated Slippery Rock, 4-1.
Grove City: Junior second baseman Lucca Baccari (Penn-Trafford) singled and doubled to help the Wolverines to an 8-3 bounce-back victory over Allegheny.
Mercyhurst: Sophomore Eric Chorba (Norwin) hit a grand slam as the Lakers rolled past Gannon, 11-0. He finished 4 for 5 with five RBIs in the victory.
Chorba also had a hit in the first game of the doubleheader, while sophomore Landon DiBeradin (Norwin) doubled, and sophomore pitcher Jake Bazala (Norwin) pitched five innings of three-hit ball in a 5-3 win over the Golden Knights.
Penn State: Josh Spiegel (Penn-Trafford), a redshirt-senior catcher, had two hits, two runs and an RBI as the Nittany Lions defeated Delaware State, 9-2.
Saint Vincent: The Bearcats (11-13, 4-4 PAC) ran their winning streak to four with a two-game sweep of Franciscan.
In a 12-8 victory in the first game, sophomore Dalton Nicklow homered, senior Jordan Sabol (Penn-Trafford) went 2 for 2 with three runs and pair of RBIs, and sophomore Devin Bonine had two hits and four RBIs.
Junior Billy Perroz (Kiski Area) homered, and sophomore Derek Hald (Kiski Area) had a double and three RBIs in a 5-1 win in Game 2.
Seton Hill: The Griffins (23-7, 11-0 PSAC) ran their winning streak to 17 with a four-game sweep of IUP.
Senior Jack Oberdorf (Greensburg Salem) had two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs, while senior Braden Durham added three hits, including a double, in a 9-3 win in the third game of the series.
Sophomore Max Mandler and freshman Joe Fiedor (Hempfield) had doubles, and sophomore Jared Downey had two hits and two RBIs in a 5-3 win to close out the sweep.
Durham was named the PSAC West Pitcher of the Week.
Washington & Jefferson: Senior pitcher Tyler Horvat (Penn-Trafford) improved to 6-2 as the Presidents defeated Grove City, 2-1.
In a nine-inning complete game, he recorded six strikeouts and did not issue a walk, while allowing five hits.
Horvat added two hits, including a triple, in a 7-0 win over Chatham, then struck out 10 for a 10-3 win over the Cougars for his 25th career pitching win.
Men’s track and field
Allegheny: Junior Jacob Boord (Hempfield) won the javelin title with a toss of 62.23 meters at the Wesminster Collegiate Invitational.
Grove City: Junior Gabe Dunlap (Penn-Trafford) won the javelin title at the Mini-Invitational at Robert E. Thorn Field with a throw of 169 feet, 10 inches.
He also ran a leg of the 400-meter relay team that finished third in 43.08 seconds.
Southern Illinois: Sophomore Daniel Norris (Hempfield) won the discus at the Joey Haines Invitational with a throw of 56.11 meters.
Westminster: Grad student Ryan Beard (Franklin Regional) was the runner-up in the 200-meter dash at the Westminster Collegiate Invitational with a time of 21.98 seconds.
He also helped the 400-meter relay win in 43.21 seconds, while his effort in the 1,600-meter relay aided a second-place finish in 3:21.77.
Women’s track and field
Clarion: Senior Jenna Uncapher (Hempfield) won the long jump title with a leap of 5.04 meters, and added a sixth-place showing in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.28 seconds at the Westminster Collegiate Invitational.
Junior Courtney Kosanovic (Norwin) added a fourth-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 12 minutes, 40.58 seconds.
Westminster: Freshman Abigail Painter (Ligonier Valley) took sixth in the 400-meter run at the Westminster Collegiate Invitational with a time of 1:3.82.
Men’s tennis
Penn State: Sophomore Loren Byers (Greensburg) is 12-8 this season, including 10-7 in duals. He has won the most matches at No. 2 singles, where he is 6-4.
Women’s lacrosse
Seton Hill: A 15-12 win over IUP put the Griffins (8-3, 6-0) in first place by themselves in the PSAC West.
Senior Elizabeth Tamasitis and sophomore Grace Agnello each registered a hat trick.
Redshirt sophomore Skylar Orlowski was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week after she notched five goals and an assist in a win over Lock Haven.
