Westmoreland County campus clippings: Latrobe grad Jacob King earns 3rd career win at Allegheny
As the only senior from Allegheny to make the trip to Cleveland, Jacob King showed his young teammates how it’s done.
King, a Latrobe graduate, earned his third career victory, and first in the weight toss, at the Ed Finnigan Greater Cleveland Colleges Invite at Case Western Reserve.
King’s winning toss sailed 15.43 meters.
He also finished second in the shot put with a season-best throw of 12.88 meters.
King was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Field Athlete of the Week.
Women’s basketball
Grove City: Senior guard Megan Kallock (Greensburg Salem) had 16 points, and sophomore Mara Polczynski (Norwin) had four assists and three steals in an 86-55 win over Thiel.
Marian: Junior guard Jayla Wehner (Norwin) made the most of a start with 16 points, on 7-of-9 shooting, in an 85-48 win against Taylor. Wehner played 22 minutes and added two assists.
Pitt-Greensburg: Freshman Madison Scalese scored a career-high 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds, senior Sidney McCully added 17 points, seven steals and five assists, and sophomore Melina Maietta (Greensburg Central Catholic) scored 15 as the Bobcats rolled past Mount Aloysius, 77-48.
It was the fourth win in a row for UPG.
Saint Vincent: It isn’t always about scoring.
Senior Madison Weber pulled down 17 rebounds and junior Alana Winkler had 10 as SVC used an edge on the boards to defeat Bethany, 47-38.
Senior Ella Marconi led the Bearcats with 12 points (and nine rebounds), and junior Emily Cavacini added 10.
Winkler also ripped seven steals.
Marconi continued the trend of boxing out opponents with 19 rebounds in an 82-60 win over Geneva. Weber had 16 points, Cavacini 12 and sophomore Emily Thompson chipped in 10 in that game.
Winkler snagged 10 more rebounds. SVC had 66 in the win.
The Bearcats (19-4, 17-3) earned the No. 2 seed in the PAC Tournament and were set to host Bethany Monday night.
Men’s basketball
Pitt-Greensburg: Senior JoJo France scored 20 points and added five steals and four assists, senior Micah Jones added 18 points and 10 rebounds, and junior Reggie Priah scored 12 in a 74-63 victory over Mount Aloysius. The win clinched a home game for the Bobcats (12-13, 8-6) in the first round of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference tournament Tuesday.
They will play Penn State Behrend (10-15, 5-9), the team they edged 70-69 in the regular-season finale. Priah scored 15 and France, 14, in the win.
Saint Vincent: Freshman Jaden Gales had 23 points to lead four double-figure scorers as SVC took care of Bethany, 76-73.
Gales made 10 of 15 shots and also grabbed 10 rebounds, while sophomore Mike Iuzzolino (13 points), grad student Shemar Bennett (11), and junior Osyon Jones (10) also powered the scoring.
Bennett grabbed a season-high 18 rebounds.
SVC (15-10, 11-9) is seeded No. 7 in the PAC Tournament and will travel to play at No. 2 Allegheny on Tuesday night.
Seton Hill: The Griffins (16-11, 11-10 PSAC) raced past Gannon, 72-57, as junior Sean Dillon had 17 points, and senior Samuel Tabe (14) and junior Ryan Meis (13) also scored in double digits. The team made 23 of 24 free throws.
West Liberty: Junior Bryce Butler (Latrobe) made 8 of 13 shots and scored a game-high 22 points to pace the Hilltoppers to a 106-90 victory over Frostburg State.
Butler had 27 points and six assists in an overtime thriller against visiting Fairmont State. The Hilltoppers (23-3, 15-1) clinched the Mountain East Conference regular-season title for the sixth straight season.
Butler has scored in double figures in all 27 games this season. He is averaging 22.6 points and 7.2 rebounds.
Men’s swimming
Clarion: Sophomore Austin Prokopec (Penn-Trafford) finished seventh in the 100-yard freestyle, in 46 seconds, at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships. He also took eighth in the 50-yard freestyle in 20.95, and anchored the sixth-place 200 freestyle relay (4:03.01).
Saint Vincent: Freshman Nick Jackman became a PAC champion when he won the 1,650-yard freestyle in 16:57.81.
Freshman Jacob Dzurica (Hempfield) took second place in the 50-yard freestyle in 20.88 seconds at the PAC Championships at Grove City.
Women’s swimming
Chatham: Sophomore Ali Cowan (Derry) posted a score of 398.0 in the 3-meter dive for a second-place finish at the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championships at Grove City.
Gannon: Junior Francesca Nemetz (Hempfield) finished eighth in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:41.36, and also was eighth in the 200 butterfly in 2:11.08 at the PSAC Championships in York.
Sophomore Madalyn Myers (Franklin Regional) took seventh place in the 500-yard freestyle at the PAC Championships with a time of 5:07.17. She added another seventh in the 1,650 free in 17:47.42.
Saint Vincent: Senior Lauren Connors took second place in the 200-yard individual medley (2:13.33) at the PAC Championships.
Senior Erica Steele (Greensburg Salem) also was a runner-up, in the 50-yard freestyle, in 24.30. She broke a program record in the 100 free during preliminaries with a time of 52.81 seconds.
Steele, Connors, sophomore Abby Leskovansky and senior Katie Kozy took second in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:37.31), before the 400 medley relay of Connors, Kozy, senior Sara Basala and Steele finished second in 4:03.63.
The Bearcats’ 400 freestyle relay also brought home silver, in 3:36.02. Members were Leskovansky, Connors, senior Cara Luallen and Steele.
Washington & Jefferson: Junior Amanda Graves (Hempfield) swam a leg of the sixth-place 200-yard freestyle relay at the PAC Championships.
Westminster: Senior Shannon Geer (Hempfield) swam the opening leg of the 400 medley relay that finished fourth at the PAC Championships in a time of 4:12.01.
Greer then helped the 200 medley relay to fourth, in 1:56.34, placed sixth, individually, in the 100 backstroke in 1:02.3, and was eighth in the 200 backstroke (2:18.09).
