Westmoreland County campus clippings: Hempfield grad Jake Boord named All-American

Hempfield grad Jacob Boord, a junior at Allegheny, finished fourth in the javelin at the NCAA Division III Championships.

Jake Boord became the first All-American in the Allegheny College men’s track and field program in a decade.

The Hempfield graduate and Gators junior finished fourth in the javelin at the NCAA Division III Championships in Pittsford, N.Y.

The two-time national qualifier improved over his 12th-place finish from last season with his toss of 63.91 meters. He came in as the No. 6 seed and competed in the second flight.

Distance runner Bobby Over was the last Gators All-American, taking the honor in 2013.

Grove City: Junior Gabe Dunlap (Penn-Trafford) capped a career season with a 10th-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championships at St. John Fisher’s Polissenu Complex.

Dunlap threw the javelin 196 feet, 6 inches in his second attempt for a personal record.

Dunlap recently received United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association All-Mid Atlantic Region honors.

Westminster: Grad student Ryan Beard earned U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors.

Beard’s top event was the 200-meter dash. His time of 21.80 seconds was the third-best mark in the region. His 10.83-second time in the 100 ranked seventh.

Women’s track and field

Arizona: Junior Mackenna Orie (Hempfield) finished 20th in the shot put (16.11) and 31st in the discus (50.23) at the NCAA West first-round championships in Sacramento, Calif.

Carlow: Grad student Olivia Miller (Ligonier Valley) finished 17th at the NAIA Championships with a mark of 11.48 meters.

Baseball

Gardner-Webb: Relief pitcher Phil Fox (Hempfield) was named to the Big South all-freshman team. Fox went 3-3 with three saves and 36 strikeouts in 28 innings. Opponents hit .202 against him in 22 appearances.

Pitt-Greensburg: Freshman James Domer was named to the D3Baseball.com all-region team after a record-breaking season for the Bobcats.

Domer broke UPG single-season marks for hits (68), triples (six) and RBIs (56).

Seton Hill: Senior third baseman Jack Oberdorf (Greensburg Salem) and sophomore pitcher Blake Barker were named to the D2CCA All-Region First Team.

Senior catcher Vincenzo Rauso, freshman outfielder Jack Whalen (Norwin) and junior pitcher Brandon Bergert were second-team selections.

Heading into the NCAA Super Regional, Oberdorf was hitting .343 with 14 home runs, 12 doubles, 30 steals and 56 RBIs for the Griffins (48-11).

Barker was 4-1 with a 1.46 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 24 2/3 innings, and Rauso was hitting a team-best .421, Whalen had a .337 average with 64 runs and a school-record 52 steals, 13 doubles and 23 RBIs.

Bergert was 8-2 with a 3.07 ERA and 89 strikeouts in 73 1/3 innings pitched.

Washington & Jefferson: Senior Tyler Horvat (Penn-Trafford) was named to the D3Baseball.com All-Region 7 first team.

His third all-region honor follows a season in which Horvat posted 11 pitching wins, a 3.86 ERA and 82 strikeouts in 93 1/3 innings

He was 29-4 in his career with a 2.71 ERA. The win total is a school record.

He also led the PAC with 70 hits and 30 stolen bases. His 62 career steals also are a program record.

Horvat batted .387 with 54 runs, six triples and a conference-high 34 walks for W&J (32-14).

Men’s golf

Notre Dame: Senior Palmer Jackson (Franklin Regional) was named an NCAA Division I PING all-region player after a strong season with the Fighting Irish.

Jackson finished 16th at the ACC Championship and tied for 20th in the NCAA Regional.

Men’s lacrosse

Saint Vincent: Senior Brody McMahon had a record-breaking season for the Bearcats, and it brought him significant accolades.

McMahon was a U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association honorable-mention pick, the first player from SVC to receive the honor.

McMahon, the PAC Defensive Player of the Year, led the conference with 52 caused turnovers to go with 74 ground balls, three goals and three assists.

He finished his career with 152 ground balls and 91 caused turnovers as SVC went 40-9.

Seton Hill: Three Griffins players earned honorable mention All-American honors from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association: senior midfielder Jeremy Sforzo, sophomore defender Holden Charboneau and senior midfielder Kage Williams.

Sforzo led the team with 58 points on 30 goals and 28 assists, Charboneau had 24 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers and Williams had 10 points, 30 ground balls and nine caused turnovers.
