Westmoreland County campus clippings: Hempfield grad Jacob Boord claims 3rd conference title

Hempfield grad Jacob Boord, a junior at Allegheny, won his first Presidents’ Athletic Conference title after claiming back-to-back North Coast Athletic Conference titles.

His trademark cowboy hat perched atop his head, Allegheny junior Jacob Boord stood proudly at the top of the medal stand.

The Hempfield product won his third conference javelin title at the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championships.

Boord’s clinching throw sailed 207 feet, 7 inches and set a facility record.

Men’s track and field

Grove City: Junior Gabe Dunlap (Penn-Trafford) was named the Most Outstanding Field Performer at the PAC Championships at Mylan Park in West Virginia.

Dunlap finished third in the long jump (6.55 meters) and triple jump (12.99 meters), sixth in the pole vault (3.41 meters) and seventh in the high jump (1.70 meters). He also helped the 400-meter relay to third place.

Saint Vincent: Junior Tim Patterson earned the Most Outstanding Performer award at the PAC Championships.

Patterson won the 5,000 in 15 minutes, 18.13 seconds, added a victory in the 10,000 (32:49.71), and came in fourth in the 3,000 steeplechase (10:00.97).

Seton Hill: Sophomore Gabriel McConville won the 1,500 at the Paul Kaiser Classic with a time of 3:54.31.

Waynesburg: Senior Andrew Kemerer (Yough) notched an eighth-place finish in the triple jump at the PAC Championships with a mark of 11.99 meters.

Westminster: Senior Ryan Beard (Franklin Regional) put on a show at the PAC Championships, winning the 100 and 200 and earning gold with the 400 relay team.

His winning time of 21.80 seconds was a personal best. He finished in 10.88 in the 100, and the 400 relay came in at 42.66.

Baseball

Seton Hill: The PSAC West champion Griffins are one of nine teams under consideration for the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional.

The Griffins (36-8), who completed a four-game sweep of Gannon over the weekend, have won won 31 of their last 32 games and are on a 26-game conference winning streak.

Tennessee: Freshman Jake Kendro (Norwin) put down a sacrifice bunt to knock in a run, and scored, as the Volunteers defeated Ballarmine, 19-1.

He made a start at second base and delivered a run-scoring double in a 10-5 win against No. 2 Vanderbilt.

Washington & Jefferson: Senior Tyler Horvat (Penn-Trafford) had two hits and drove in two runs, and pitched six innings with 10 strikeouts, as the Presidents defeated Westminster, 5-3, in 10 innings.

Waynesburg: Freshman pitcher Ethan Erhard (Hempfield) moved to 3-3 on the season in a 3-2 win over Grove City.

Erhard allowed eight hits but struck out six and walked one in 7 1⁄3 innings.

Westminster: Junior Donald Shimko (Latrobe) tripled and scored, but the Titans fell to Washington & Jefferson, 5-3, in 10 innings.

Softball

Bloomsburg: Sophomore Callie Sowers (Hempfield) has been busy this season in the pitching circle.

Sowers was leading the PSAC in starts (27), innings pitched (175) and strikeouts (217).

Cal (Pa.): Junior Charity Henderson (Southmoreland) has been a mainstay in the outfield, and a key bat, for the Vulcans.

In 44 games, all of which she started, Henderson was hitting .331 with 11 doubles, two triples, a team-leading four home runs and 34 RBIs.

Marist: Senior pitcher Kiley Myers (Latrobe) tossed six innings of no-hit softball and struck out three for her eighth win of the season as Marist (22-25) defeated Quinnipiac, 8-0.

Ohio: Sophomore catcher Emma Hoffner (Hempfield) hit a solo homer, her second of the season, as the Bobcats toppled Western Michigan, 7-1.

Pitt: Sophomore Haylie Brunson (Mt. Pleasant) went 3 for 3 with a home run, tying her career high for hits, but the Panthers fell to Duke, 4-3.

Brunson hit a solo homer to left center in the second inning, her third homer of the season.

Women’s track and field

Clarion: Senior Jenna Uncapher (Hempfield) finished eighth in the high jump with a season-best 1.56 meters at the Paul Kaiser Classic at Shippensburg.

Duquesne: Junior Faith Mucci (Latrobe) joined the 1,600 relay team in a run to seventh place at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia.

Junior Emily Brozeski (Norwin), meantime, took fourth in the shot put (12.38) at the Red Flash Open at St. Francis (Pa.).

Seton Hill: Senior Darby Roth ran to victory in the 800 and 1,500 at Shippensburg’s Paul Kaiser Classic.

Grad teammate Alexis Cunningham won the steeplechase in 11:35.82.

Waynesburg: Sophomore Megan Barry (Norwin) finished third in the javelin at the PAC Championships with a toss of 35.77 meters.
