Greensburg Salem grad Hayden Teska is a quarterback for the 2023 Seton Hill football team.

There is a Greensburg Salem flavor to the Seton Hill football team.

With redshirt freshman Hayden Teska taking over the quarterbacking duties over the weekend, there are now three former Golden Lions contributing for the Griffins (1-1), who defeated Shippensburg for the first time, 28-23, on Saturday at Offutt Field.

The other players are senior tight end Ryan Thomas and freshman wide receiver Cody Rubrecht.

And remember, former Greensburg Salem head coach Dave Keefer is an assistant this season on Dan Day’s staff.

Teska, who began the season third in the depth chart, was sharp in his debut, completing 8 of 20 passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns, including a 74-yard strike to redshirt junior Ethan Fame, who had three receptions for 104 yards.

Thomas had two catches, and Rubrecht had one. Rubrecht had a touchdown grab in Week 1.

Just a couple of years ago, Teska was throwing passes to Rubrecht at Greensburg Salem, on the same turf at Offutt.

Sophomore Ritchie McCormack is not a Greensburg Salem grad — he is from Tuscon, Ariz.— but he finished Saturday’s game with an impressive 15 tackles, a half-sack and a pass-breakup.

Another local Seton Hill note: Redshirt junior wide receiver Mike Evans (Franklin Regional) joined the team this season. Evans has Division I experience at Robert Morris and West Virginia.

Sophomore defensive back Demetri Whitehead was named the PSAC West Special Teams Athlete of the Week after he blocked a punt that set up a touchdown, and recovered a fumble.

Allegheny: Senior wide receiver Declan O’Brien (Norwin) grabbed 13 receptions, his second double-digit-catch game in a row, for 158 yards and a touchdown as the Gators fell to Geneva, 27-21.

In two games, O’Brien has 27 receptions for 327 yards and three touchdowns.

Last week, he was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week.

Edinboro: Junior linebacker C.J. Waldier (Yough) had nine tackles, and junior safety Toby Cline (Jeannette) added five stops and a forced fumble in a 35-28 loss to Shepherd.

Grove City: Sophomore linebacker Jack Jollie (Penn-Trafford) and senior cornerback Gabe Dunlap (Penn-Trafford) combined for 15 tackles, and each had an interception as the Wolverines downed Waynesburg, 43-27.

Jollie had nine stops, four of them solo, and also forced a fumble.

Dunlap was named the PAC Special Teams Player of the Week after he averaged 39.7 yards per return on three kickoff returns against Waynesburg.

Maine: Fifth-year running back John Gay (Penn-Trafford) had a 13-yard touchdown run in a 44-7 loss to North Dakota State.

Mercyhurst: Senior linebacker Dillon Ferretti (Hempfield) made five tackles and broke up a pair of passes in the Lakers’ 41-29 win over Lock Haven.

N.C. State: Grad safety Robert Kennedy (Jeannette) had five tackles in a 45-24 loss to Notre Dame.

Washington & Jefferson: Junior right end Zach Cernuto (Southmoreland) scored a touchdown on a 2-yard rush, and senior Justin Huss (Derry) led the Presidents with 68 rushing yards in a 42-7 win over Bethany.

Waynesburg: While the Yellow Jackets did not win, a pair of local players had big games in a 43-27 loss to Grove City.

Grad running back Justin Flack (Derry) ran for 114 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries, and sophomore receiver Isaac Trout (Southmoreland) pulled in eight catches for 81 yards and two touchdowns.
