Greensburg Central Catholic grad Carlo Denis plays for Grove City at Saint Vincent on Oct. 21, 2023.

Carlo Denis was a prolific goal scorer during his time at Greensburg Central Catholic.

He finished with 139 career goals which, at the time of his graduation, ranked fifth all time in WPIAL history.

Now a freshman at Grove City — another GCC program — he is on the board again.

Denis scored his first college goal as the Wolverines blanked Waynesburg, 3-0, in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.

Denis scored in the 85th minute for the team’s third goal of the night.

Another local player also is playing well for the Wolverines. Junior defender Luke Kimmich (Franklin Regional) scored two goals and assisted another as Grove City toppled Saint Vincent, 5-1.

He plays defense, but Kimmich was named the PAC Offensive Player of the Week.

Seton Hill: Sophomore goalkeeper Aidan Hollander was named the PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week.

Hollander made six save in the Griffins’ 1-0 upset of No. 19 Mercyhurst. He added five stops in a 1-1 tie with Pitt-Johnstown.

Westminster: Junior Lucas Toohey (Mt. Pleasant) contributed an assist in a 3-2 win over Thiel.

Akron: Senior midfielder Sarah Nguyen (Penn-Trafford) and junior forward Lacey Bernick (Norwin) have each appeared in 11 games for the Zips. Nguyen has one assist this season.

Freshman Kilee Coatney had a goal and an assist, while senior Leah Policarpio, sophomore Jessica Molitoris and senior Victoria Rothrauff (Franklin Regional) also filled the net for Seton Hill.

Senior Emma Rain (Penn-Trafford), Rothrauff, Molitoris and Coatney all scored in a 4-0 win over Cal (Pa.).

Coatney was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week.

Slippery Rock: Senior Sydney Patrick (Hempfield) collected two assists, giving her four in her last four games, as the Rock edged IUP, 2-1.

Westminster: Junior Brooke Horvath (Franklin Regional) delivered an assist as the Titans improved to 13-3 overall and 7-2 in the PAC with a 2-0 win over Thiel.

Women’s swimming

Cal (Pa.): Sophomore Ashlyn Hornick (Mt. Pleasant) swam a leg of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay that finished in 1 minute, 43.69 seconds in a tri-meet against Fairmont State and Shippensburg.

Clarion: Junior Jordan Kutchak (Norwin) contributed to a key race as the Golden Eagles rallied past Gannon, 152-145.

She swam a leg for the 400-yard freestyle relay in a meet-clinching win (3:37.43). Clarion trailed by two going into the race.

Washington & Jefferson: Senior Amanda Graves (Penn-Trafford) posted a runner-up in the 50-yard backstroke, and was third in the 50 fly and 100 fly in a tri-meet against Allegheny and Wheeling.

Freshman Morgan Baughman (Mt. Pleasant) was third in the 50 free.

Men’s swimming

Clarion: Freshman Henry Miller (Southmoreland) picked up a pair of wins in a 155-145 PSAC loss to Gannon.

Miller took the 50-yard freestyle in 20.90 seconds, and helped the 200-yard medley relay to a victory (1:34.22). Teammate and junior Austin Prokopec (Penn-Trafford) was second in 21.27.

Classmate Nathaniel Harden (Hempfield) took second in the 50 breaststroke (29.21).

Women’s bowling

Saint Vincent: Sophomore Abby Justice was named the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Bowler of the Week.

She was named MVP at the Grapevine Classic as she averaged 214.6 across five games.

An interesting side note to her performance: Justice planned to use an old bowling ball owned by her late grandfather, Richard Beauchamp, but only for her first attempt.

She ended up using the ball for the entire two-day tournament and set two school records.
