Westmoreland County campus clippings: Area grads help Pitt wrestling upset No. 8 Virginia Tech

Three former Westmoreland standouts made an impact on an upset by the Pitt wrestling team.

Redshirt senior Micky Phillippi (Derry), redshirt junior Colton Camacho (Franklin Regional) and freshman Dayton Pitzer (Mt. Pleasant) all recorded wins as the 22nd-ranked Panthers clipped No. 8 Virginia Tech, 26-12, on Friday to move into first place in the ACC.

Camacho opened with a pin at 125 pounds, and seventh-ranked Phillippi followed with a decision at 141.

Pitzer, ranked No. 5, capped the scoring with a decision at heavyweight for the Panthers.

Wrestling

Bucknell: Junior Kurt Phipps (Norwin) picked up a pair of wins as the Bison defeated LIU (38-4) and Rider (19-15).

Phipps, ranked No. 23 at 133 pounds, won by decision and major decision to move to 24-8.

Buffalo: Freshman 165-pounder Chase Kranitz (Norwin) has a 4-1 record, with a fall, for the Bulls.

His first collegiate win came at WrangleMania in November in Bethlehem, Pa. He scored a first-period pin.

Clarion: Sophomore John Altieri (Norwin) is 11-6 this season, competing at 149 and 157 pounds for the Golden Eagles. He had registered three major decisions and three falls.

Women’s swimming

Cal (Pa.): Freshman Ashlyn Hornick (Mt. Pleasant) reached PSAC qualifying in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.82 seconds while competing at the Western Pennsylvania Invitational.

Gannon: Sophomore Madalyn Myers (Franklin Regional) won the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle, but the Knights fell to St. Bonaventure, 195-103.

Westminster: Senior Shannon Greer (Hempfield) took third place in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 95 seconds in a 189-102 loss to Mount Union.

Women’s indoor track and field

Cal (Pa.): Sophomore Tatum Hoffman (Ligonier Valley) won the high jump with a height of 5 feet, 2.25 inches, and also competed in the pentathlon, at the Youngstown State Mid-Major Invitational.

Duquesne: Junior Sadie Wetzel (Latrobe) finished tied for second in the high jump with a mark of 1.65 meters at the Penn State National meet.

Junior Hannah Seitzinger (Belle Vernon), meantime, took fourth in the 600-meter run (1:32.47).

At the Youngstown State Mid-Major, junior Faith Mucci (Latrobe) took 15th in the 60-meter dash in 8.05 seconds.

Saint Vincent: Freshman Kristen Prince finished second in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 18:36.59, to break a school record, at the Youngstown State Mid-Major.

Prince was named the PAC Rookie of the Week.

Men’s indoor track and field

Allegheny: Senior Jacob King (Latrobe) finished 13th in the weight throw with a distance of 14.26 meters at the Youngstown State Mid-Major. The mark was the best among Division III throwers at the event.

He also competed in the shot put.

Grove City: Sophomore Joe Whipkey (Penn-Trafford) finished 21st in the 500-meter run in 1:13.48 at the Youngstown State Mid-Major.

Saint Vincent: Junior Tim Patterson broke a program record at the Youngstown State Mid-Major Invitational, placing 10th in the 5,000-meter run in 15:13.21.

The old record of 15:38.57 was his own.

Waynesburg: Senior Andrew Kemerer (Yough) finished 13th in the triple jump (40-5.5) at the YSU Icebreaker meet.

Westminster: Senior Ryan Beard (Franklin Regional) took 35th in the 200-meter run and matched that finish in the 60-meter dash at the Youngstown State Mid-Major.

Hockey

Saint Vincent: The Bearcats racked up 71 shots on goal and skated past Robert Morris, 15-6, as Jake Holtzman (Hempfield) had five goals and Zach Ridilla (Hempfield) added a hat trick.
