Westmoreland campus clippings: Westminster's Brooke Horvath earns PAC Soccer Newcomer of the Year
Presidents’ Athletic Conference women’s soccer teams, get used to the name.
Brooke Horvath didn’t waste any time making an impact at the NCAA Division III level, adding leverage to the lineup at Westminster.
The Franklin Regional graduate was lauded for her instantly impressive performance, earning PAC Newcomer of the Year.
She also was a first-team all-conference selection.
Horvath finished second in the conference in points, with 33, while leading the PAC with 11 assists.
She started 13 of 17 games and scored 11 goals heading into the ECAC Tournament for the Titans (16-2-1).
Horvath’s teammate, freshman midfielder Natalie Vilchek (Yough) made second-team All-PAC.
Men’s cross country
Westmoreland County CC: Freshman Dante Frescura (Latrobe) finished ninth to claim All-American honors — the first in program history to do so — and the Wolfpack took 13th overall at the NJCAA Championships in Milledgeville, Ga.
Frescura crossed the finish line in 27 minutes, 12 seconds.
Men’s basketball
Carlow: Freshman Riley Comforti (Southmoreland) had 21 points, and junior AJ Sharp (Jeannette) added 10 but the Celtics (1-4) fell to Penn State Fayette, 112-104.
Charlotte: Graduate student guard Austin Butler (Latrobe) scored 16 points and grabbed four rebounds in a 76-64 victory against USC Upstate. Butler, who came to Charlotte for a fifth season from Holy Cross, is averaging 13 points and 4.5 rebounds for the 49ers.
West Liberty: Sophomore guard Bryce Butler (Latrobe) had 20 points, five rebounds and four assists as the Hilltoppers rolled past East Stroudsburg, 108-93. He had 14 points and eight rebounds in a season-opening 104-82 win over Winston-Salem.
Women’s basketball
Grove City: Junior guard Megan Kallock (Greensburg Salem) scored a career-high 17 points, senior Allison Podkul (Hempfield) added 16 and freshman Mara Polczynski (Norwin) had 10, but the Wolverines fell to Penn State Behrend, 85-65, in the Penn State Behrend Tip-Off Tournament. Polczynski had seven steals.
In an 83-65 win over Alfred to open the season, Kallock had 12 points in her first college start, Podkul grabbed nine rebounds and Polczynski had eight assists in her first college game.
Point Park: Graduate student guard Michelle Burns (Hempfield) had 20 points, including a 6-for-10 effort from behind the 3-point arc, and junior forward Jordan Yaniga (Franklin Regional) had 11 points as the Pioneers took care of Penn State Greater Allegheny, 80-51, to move to 4-0.
In the previous game, a 64-48 win over the same opponent, Burns scored 15 and Yaniga pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds.
St. Joseph’s: Graduate student guard Alayna Gribble (Norwin) had 15 points, including a 3-for-4 effort from 3-point range, but St. Joseph’s fell to Drexel, 63-55.
Seton Hill: Grad student Katie Nolan had 16 points, and Christiane Frye added 13 as the Griffins posted their third straight win, 63-46 over Virginia State in the PSAC/CIAA Challenge at IUP.
Women’s volleyball
Pitt-Greensburg: Junior Emma Halutick was picked for the All-AMCC Third Team. She led the Bobcats with 172 kills.
Saint Vincent: Junior setter Carly Augustine (Latrobe) was named second-team All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference, while sophomore outside hitter Luciana Polk made honorable mention.
Augustine led SVC in kills per set (2.37) and also averaged 3.47 assists and 3.04 digs per set.
Slippery Rock: Junior Stephanie O’Donnell (Penn-Trafford) had two kills and three blocks in a 3-0 loss to Gannon.
Westminster: Senior Samantha Kelly (Penn-Trafford) had a team-best 23 assists and two aces, but the Titans lost to Otterbein, 3-0, in the NCAA Division III Tournament in Grand Rapids, Mich. Kelly was named first-team All-PAC for the second year in a row.
Westminster finished the season with a 28-5 record and won its third straight PAC title. The program has qualified for the NCAA Tournament three other times — 2019, ‘08, ‘07 — and the 1997 NAIA Tournament.
Wrestling
Gannon: Senior 125-pounder Jacob Dunlap (Belle Vernon) was named the PSAC Athlete of the Week after he won a title at the Journeyman Collegiate Classic.
Pitt: Redshirt senior Micky Phillippi (Derry) picked up a technical fall (17-2) victory as the 15th-ranked Panthers downed Edinboro, 28-20. Phillippi is a three-time NCAA qualifier and two-time ACC champion.
Redshirt sophomore Colton Camacho (Franklin Regional), meanwhile, scored takedowns in the first and third period on the way to a 6-1 win against Buffalo in a season-opening 21-12 win.
Pitt-Johnstown: Redshirt sophomore Nate Smith (Franklin Regional) earned a 3-2 win in the No. 21 Mountain Cats’ season opener, a 23-14 win over No. 5 West Liberty.
Seton Hill: Senior Frank Bonura (125 pounds), redshirt senior 141-pounder Joel Cawoski (Latrobe), redshirt senior Logan McKoy, grad student Tyler Alberts, junior Brandon Matthews and sophomore heavyweight John Meyers (Greensburg Salem) picked up wins as the Griffins handled Belmont Abbey, 31-10.
Washington & Jefferson: Senior Jaden Datz (Southmoreland) won a title at 174 pounds at the W&J Invitational. Datz, who has won back-to-back PAC Wrestler of the Week awards, scored a pin, a major decision and regular decision after a first-round bye. He then defeated John Penfold of Lake Erie, 3-2, in the finals.
Women’s swimming
Chatham: Freshman Ali Cowan (Derry) was named the PAC Rookie of the Week. She won the 1- and 3-meter diving events against Westminster with scores of 219.60 and 242.85.
Westminster: Junior Baylee Horvath (Franklin Regional) helped her teammates win the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1 minute, 58.62 seconds in a 173-117 victory over Chatham.
