Westmoreland campus clippings: Western Michigan's Jack Salopek plays at Pitt
Western Michigan freshman quarterback Jack Salopek (Norwin) saw his first college action, and it came in his return to the Pittsburgh area.
In backup duty, Salopek completed 3 of 3 passes for 20 yards as the Broncos defeated Pitt, 44-41. Some forget that Salopek had an offer from Pitt early in his high school career, but the Panthers later pulled the scholarship opportunity.
East Carolina: Redshirt freshman offensive lineman Trent Holler (Latrobe) has appeared in all three games this season for the Pirates (1-2). Holler is up to 6 foot 2 inches and 308 pounds.
Mercyhurst: Senior Jason Armstrong (Latrobe) had four receptions for 68 yards, but the Lakers lost to East Stroudsburg, 17-7.
Saint Francis (Pa.): Redshirt junior Gio Vonne Sanders (Jeannette) had five tackles for the Red Flash (1-2) in a 39-24 win over Wagner. Also, freshman lineman Wylie Spiker (Ligonier Valley) made his third straight start.
Women’s soccer
Carlow: Senior midfielder Sara Orndoff (Greensburg Central Catholic) had a goal for the Celtics in a 5-0 win over Brescia (Ky.).
Duquesne: Junior Hannah Nguyen (Penn-Trafford) delivered a corner kick to junior Lexy Kendro (Norwin) and the local connection helped produce a goal for the Dukes. Kendro’s header came to Emma Bundy, who booted in the score in a 2-1, overtime loss to UMass.
Nguyen has three assists this season and Kendro has one.
Ohio: Senior goalkeeper Sam Wexell (Norwin) has started seven games for the Bobcats and has a 4-3 record with three shutouts. Her goals-against avearge of 1.14 ranks fourth in the Mid-American Conference.
Pitt-Greensburg: Freshman Emily Bonelli was named the AMCC Offensive Player of the Week following a four-goal performance against Medaille. Bonelli is tied for the team lead with eight goals this season for the Bobcats.
Women’s tennis
Pitt-Greensburg: Sophomore Emily Ruhlman was named the AMCC Player of the Week. She won two singles and doubles matches against Pitt-Bradford and Penn State Behrend.
Men’s golf
Westminster: Junior Sam Napper (Mt. Pleasant) carded rounds of 77 and 80 to finish 10th at the Mountain Valley Collegiate Classic in Cresson. The Titans won the team championship with a 589.
Women’s golf
Washington & Jefferson: Freshman Angelika Dewicki (Greensburg Central Catholic) posted her second straight top-five finish as she tied for fourth at the Thiel College Fall Invitational. She shot an 87. The performance led to a second consecutive PAC Rookie of the Week honor.
Women’s cross country
Saint Vincent: Senior Sydney Green (Latrobe) was named the PAC Runner of the Week after winning the SVC Bearcat Invitational by 35 seconds over the nearest finisher. Green finished in 20 minutes, 35.72 seconds.
