Westmoreland campus clippings: UPG women's tennis continues to thrive

Pitt-Greensburg posted its third consecutive win in women’s tennis with a 9-0 victory over Mount Aloysius. Junior Abby Rosman now has 26 career doubles wins, tying Sydney Geary for the most in program history.

Rosman and junior Amber Sterrett won their match 8-1 for the Bobcats (3-1, 3-0 AMCC).

Women’s soccer

Duquesne: Freshman Mackenzie Leeder (Mt. Pleasant) has played in five games, with two starts, for the Dukes (3-3, 1-0 Atlantic 10).

IUP: Sisters Samantha Nemeth and Jessica Nemeth (Greensburg Central Catholic) are playing together for the Crimson Hawks.

Samantha, a junior, has notched one assist over 16 starts, while sophomore Jessica has appeared in a two games.

Another local player, sophomore Sam Felder (Greensburg Central Catholic) has played in five games.

Robert Morris: Freshman Malia Kearns (Penn-Trafford) has produced two goals and three assists over eight games for the Colonials (5-0-3), while freshman Paloma Swankler (Norwin) has two goals and two assists.

RMU is off to its best start in program history.

Saint Vincent: Junior Tanisha Grewal and senior Jessica Persin (Hempfield) each had a goal as the Bearcats beat La Roche, 2-1. SVC (3-1) outshot the Red Hawks, 21-3.

Men’s soccer

Westminster: Grad student Tyler Caterino (Monessen) was named the PAC Offensive Player of the Week. He had eight points over two games for the Titans, including a hat trick in a 7-0 win over Pitt-Bradford. He added two assists in a 4-0 win against Heidelberg.

Caterino has 13 goals, which leads the PAC.

Women’s volleyball

Pitt-Greensburg: Sophomore Abby Copeland set a program record with 37 digs in a 3-1 loss to Waynesburg.

Seton Hill: Sophomore Paige Cole was the Most Valuable Player and freshman Payton Rodberg made the all-tournament team at the Seton Hill Tournament.

The Griffins finished 3-0. Cole had 52 kills and 30 digs, while Rodberg posted double-figure kills in each win.

Women’s tennis

Saint Vincent: Freshman Carolina Walters was named the PAC Rookie of the Week. She had a 4-0 record at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles as the Bearcats defeated Thiel and Geneva.

Seton Hill: The Griffins recorded their first win of the season, 6-1 over Cal (Pa.). Junior Kasey Storkel (Greensburg Salem), freshman Maria Pereda, junior Juliana Begley and sophomore Sophia Solomon were singles winners, while doubles teams to win included freshman Carissa Shepard and Storkel, and Begley and Solomon.

Men’s cross country

Grove City: Sophomore Joe Whipkey (Penn-Trafford) finished 36th with a time of 25 minutes, 58 seconds at the Allegheny Classic.

Women’s cross country

Allegheny: Freshman Chloe Bonson (Penn-Trafford) was named PAC Rookie of the Week after her 10th-place finish at the Allegheny Classic. She crossed the finish line in 19:52.4.

Seton Hill: With 44 points, the Griffins won the Robert Morris Colonial Invitational.

Sophomore Hannah Smrcka finished third overall with a time of 23:37, and junior Isabella Myles took fifth (24:05).

Men’s lacrosse

Seton Hill: Griffins’ Hall of Famer Matt Delmonico, the program’s career leader in points with 242 (166 goals, 76 assists) signed with the Vancouver Warriors of the National Lacrosse League.

Another former Griffin, Jacob Motiuk, was drafted by the Calgary Roughnecks in the fifth round of the NLL Draft.
