Iowa’s Spencer Lee celebrates after defeating Rutgers’ Nick Suriani after the 2018 125-pound NCAA championship match.

Not that it comes as much of a surprise, but Spencer Lee is holding down his No. 1 national ranking at Iowa.

The senior 125-pound wrestler from Franklin Regional recorded another pin for the top-ranked Hawkeyes flattened No. 9 Illinois, 36-6. The victory improved his winning streak to 26 matches, and the fall was the 24th of his career — the 19th in the first period.

Also, Lee moved to 25-0 in Big Ten duals and is 20-0 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, Iowa’s home venue.

Michael Kemerer (Franklin Regional), a redshirt senior at 174, recorded a major decision for Iowa in its latest win.

Wrestling

Bucknell: Junior 165-pounder Zach Hartman (Belle Vernon), ranked No. 7 nationally in Division I, scored a seven-minute technical fall for the Bison in a 26-8 loss to Army.

Women’s basketball

Grove City: The Wolverines have a new team member in the backcourt. Sophomore Megan Kallock (Greensburg Salem) transferred from one PAC school to another after leaving Saint Vincent.

The 5-foot-6 guard, who is second in Greensburg Salem program history with 1,868 points, saw limited time in 13 games, playing 53 minutes last season at SVC.

Kallock joins another former standout in junior forward Allison Podkul (Hempfield), a 5-8 starting forward who averaged 9.7 points and 5.9 rebounds in 28 games last season. She shot 50% from the field.

The Wolverines host Waynesburg Wednesday in the season opener.

Marian: Freshman guard Jayla Wehner (Norwin) has played in 21 games, starting three of them, and is averaging 4.1 points and is second on the team with 59 assists. Marian is 19-4.

Marietta: Freshman guard Olivia Gribble (Norwin) made her first collegiate start and shined, scoring 19 points, including four 3-pointers in a 77-73 loss to Baldwin Wallace. She added four assists.

Pitt-Greensburg: UPG alum and Hempfield graduate Emily Nelson will be an assistant coach on first-year coach Kelsey Oddis’ staff. Nelson is the program leader in career 3-pointers (172) and is fifth in 3-point percentage (.310). A 1,000-point scorer, Nelson has the second-most minutes played at UPG, with 3,285.

Point Park: Senior guard Michelle Burns (Hempfield) had a team-high 25 points, made 5 of 9 3-pointers and handed out seven assists, but the Pioneers were edged by Rio Grande, 108-106. Point Park, which scored 61 first-half points, made 19 3-pointers.

Sophomore forward Jordan Yaniga (Franklin Regional) added nine points in the loss.

Saint Joseph’s: Grad student Alayna Gribble (Norwin) scored 15 points, on 6-for-10 shooting, to help the Hawks to a 76-69 win over UMass. She has a team-best 13-point average through five games.

Men’s basketball

Carlow: Senior guard Swade Redman (Jeannette) had 13 points and nine rebounds for the Celtics (0-7), and sophomore Hunter DeStefano (Penn-Trafford) added eight points in a 91-69 loss to Ohio Christian.

Holy Cross: Senior guard Austin Butler (Latrobe) had 11 points and 13 rebounds, but the Crusaders fell to Colgate, 74-63. Butler is second on the team in scoring (13.3 ppg) and is the leading rebounder as a point guard (8.9 rpg).

West Virginia Wesleyan: Redshirt sophomore guard Marvel McGowan (Greensburg Salem) has come off the bench in five games this season, scoring 2.2 points and grabbing 1.4 rebounds. He averaged 1.4 points in 14 games as a freshman.

Women’s swimming

Clarion: Sophomore Kosanovic (Norwin) was part of the fourth-place 200-yard medley relay in 1 minute, 54.23 seconds in a loss to IUP.

IUP: Junior Michelle Lopes (Franklin Regional) won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.56 seconds, and senior Emma Winchell (Penn-Trafford) helped the 200-yard medley relay to a win as the Crimson Hawks downed Clarion, 147-52, in their season opener.

Women’s indoor track

Point Park: Freshman Allison Plassio (Norwin) finished 14th in the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 40 seconds at the Youngstown State Mid-Major Invitational.

Baseball

Seton Hill: The Griffins will start the season ranked No. 5 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Atlantic Region Preseason Poll. Seton Hill returns four players who started all 13 games during a shortened 2020 season — grad student Tommy Pellis (Greensburg Central Catholic), senior Jordan Fiedor (Hempfield), junior Isaiah DiAndreth (Hempfield) and senior Derek Orndorff — and several key pitchers.

Top-ranked East Stroudsburg, Millersville, Bloomsburg and Mercyhurst round out the top four.

Seton Hill opens the season March 5 at home.
