Westmoreland campus clippings: Sowers, Little stand out for Bloomsburg softball

A local battery is powering the Bloomsburg softball team.

Sophomore pitcher Callie Sowers (Hempfield) struck out 11 and scattered seven hits in a 7-0 shutout of IUP. She did not walk a batter.

Sophomore catcher Emma Little (Penn-Trafford) had a hit and an RBI in the victory for the Huskies (5-13).

Through 18 games, Little was batting .279 with a pair of doubles and five RBIs.

Sowers had a 3-6 record with 66 K’s in 58 1/3 innings.

Mercyhurst: Junior pitcher Morgan Hilty (Penn-Trafford) allowed four hits and two earned runs as the Lakers defeated Notre Dame (Ohio), 10-2. Hilty struck out four and moved to 2-3 for the season.

Penn State: Fifth-year pitcher Bailey Parshall (Belle Vernon) tossed a complete-game as the Nittany Lions blanked Canisius, 7-0. Parshall struck out nine and walked one as she improved to 8-3 for the season.

She has made more appearances in the circle than any pitcher in school history.

Pikeville: Junior Carolyn Alincic (Mt. Pleasant) struck out seven, walked two and surrendered two earned runs in a 10-2 win over Tennessee Southern in six innings.

Alincic, a Morehead State transfer, is 4-4 with a 2.56 ERA in 52 innings. She has a team-best 66 K’s and 10 walks.

Pitt: Freshman Hailey Brunson (Mt. Pleasant) delivered a two-run double, but the Panthers fell to Louisville, 5-4. Brunson then went 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs when the Panthers fell to Louisville, 9-6.

Robert Morris: Fifth-year pitcher Dana Vatakis (Monessen) pitched a four-hitter, with four strikeouts and no walks, as the Colonials blanked Detroit Mercy, 7-0.

Washington & Jefferson: Sophomore Emily Schmucker (Latrobe) was named the PAC Hitter of the Week. She delivered a pair of run-scoring doubles as the Presidents earned a sweep (10-1, 11-3) over Penn State Greater Allegheny. Both games ended in five innings.

She went 3 for 4 with two RBIs in Game 2.

Westminster: Sophomore Sydney Lokay (Norwin) hit her first collegiate home run to left field, as the Titans blanked Wooster, 2-0.

Baseball

Bucknell: Junior shortstop Anthony Sherwin (Penn-Trafford) was named the Patriot League Player of the Week after he went 8 for 15 with four doubles, six runs and eight RBIs in a four-game series against Navy.

Sherwin went 4 for 4 with a career-high six RBIs in the second game. He is hitting .412 with a 1.076 on-base percentage.

Wrestling

Bucknell: Junior Kurt Phipps (Norwin) went 1-1 at the NCAA championships in Tulsa. Okla. He lost to 8-0 to No. 8 seed Aaron Nagao in the first round at 133 pounds.

Phipps received an at-large bid into the tournament after he placed seventh at the EIWA championships.

Pitt: Redshirt senior Micky Phillippi (Derry) fell one win short of a medal at the NCAA championships. A 133-pounder, he saw his college career come to an end in the consolation round.

He finished with 132 wins, two ACC titles, and five NCAA Tournament appearances.

Virginia: Grad 149-pounder Jarod Verkleeren (Hempfield) was eliminated on the first day of the NCAA championships after a pair of losses.

The 27th seed dropped a 5-1 decision to Doug Zapf of Penn in the consolation bracket. It was a rematch of a regular-season bout.

Women’s basketball

Pitt-Greensburg: Senior point guard Sidney McCully was named to the D3Hoops.com All-Region 7 Team. The Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference co-Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year averaged a team-best 18.4 points per game, while also producing 7.9 rebounds and 4.6 assists.

She scored over 1,000 career points.

Men’s lacrosse

Saint Vincent: Senior Jacob Visalli was named the PAC Offensive Player of the Week after helping the Bearcats (6-0) to a 3-0 stretch.

Visalli had 10 goals in three games, including a team-high four in the Bearcats’ 9-8 win over Marietta.

Women’s lacrosse

Saint Vincent: Junior attacker Bridget Doyle was named the PAC Offensive Player of the Week after she tallied 34 points — 12 goals, 22 assists — 0ver three wins for the Bearcats. She had four goals and seven assists and became the 16th player in program history to reach 100 career points in a win over Muskingum.

Freshman Carolina Walters was named the PAC Rookie of the Week. She had seven goals and six assists as the Bearcats went 3-0 last week.

Seton Hill: Graduate student Kyleigh Hessian was named the PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week. The goaltender gave up five goals and made 17 saves over two games. She made 10 stops in a 14-5 win over Slippery Rock.

Men’s outdoor track & field

Allegheny: Junior Jake Boord (Hempfield) made his first throw of the 2023 outdoor track and field season count. He won the javelin title at the Stan Romanoski Open at the Mylan Park Track and Field Complex in West Virginia with a personal, school and venue record on his first attempt.

His winner sailed 62.72 meters. No other competitor reached 55 meters.

Boord is the two-time defending North Coast Athletic Conference champion.

Cal (Pa.): Senior Mason Jobe (Greensburg Salem) recorded a pair of top-five finishes at the Stan Romanoski Open hosted by West Virginia. He was second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 2.97 seconds, and took fifth in the 1,500 in 4:22.02.

Westminster: Senior Ryan Beard (Franklin Regional) ran to an eighth-place finish in the 200 (22.35 seconds) at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational at Coastal Carolina.

Women’s outdoor track & field

Cal (Pa.): Junior Malia Anderson (Greensburg Salem), competing for the first time since the 2022 NCAA cross country championships, took fifth (5:11.29) in the 1,500-meter run at the Romanoski Open at West Virginia.
