Westmoreland campus clippings: Seton Hill women win 9th straight game

Seton Hill remained one of the hottest teams in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference basketball, rallying past Pitt-Johnstown, 65-58, for a ninth straight victory.

Senior Katie Nolan played her best game of the season, scoring a career-high 31 points and pulling down 15 rebounds while shooting 12 of 16 from the field. She had 21 points in the second half.

Nolan earned PSAC West Athlete of the Week honors.

Senior Samantha Kosmacki added 14 points and sophomore Christiane Frye added 12 for Seton Hill (15-4, 9-1 PSAC West), which was set to host Edinboro Monday.

The winning streak includes wins over nationally ranked Gannon (No. 15) and IUP (17).

The Griffins jumped three spots, to No. 2, in the D2SIDA Atlantic Regional Poll.

Women’s basketball

Marietta: Sophomore Olivia Gribble (Norwin) scored a game-high 17 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, as Marietta (15-1, 8-1 Ohio Athletic Conference), ranked No. 16 in NCAA Division III, cruised by Capital, 91-69, for its ninth straight win.

Marian: Sophomore Jayla Wehner (Norwin) played 25 minutes first off the bench, giving Marian (17-2, 9-0 Crossroads League) seven points and a pair of assists in a 79-56 win over Mt. Vernon Nazarene.

Wehner has played in 18 games and is averaging 3.8 points and 1.2 assists.

Pitt-Greensburg: The Bobcats moved to 12-3 overall and 7-1 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference with a 64-44 victory over Hilbert (N.Y.).

Junior Sidney McCully had 16 points, and senior Nadege Durand and freshman Melina Maietta (Greensburg Central Catholic) had 15 apiece. It was the team’s fifth win on six games.

Saint Vincent: Junior center Ella Marconi scored a game-high 23 points to lead four double-digit scorers as the Bearcats defeated Geneva, 80-71.

Marconi also grabbed 15 rebounds, while senior Taylor Greer (15 points, 12 rebounds) also had a double-double, and sophomore Emily Cavacini (11 points) and freshman Emily Thompson (10) also contributed to the win.

Westminster: Round 1 goes to big sister. Titans senior guard Magen Polczynski (Norwin) had 16 points and five rebounds to help her team take down Grove City and her sister, freshman Mara, 71-65, in a PAC matchup.

Senior forward Allison Podkul (Hempfield) led Grove City (6-6, 3-3) with 20 points (9 for 13 FGs) and nine rebounds in 24 minutes, while junior guard Megan Kallock (Greensburg Salem) added 14.

Mara Polczynski grabbed nine rebounds and dished out six assists.

Westminster moved to 9-5, 6-2.

The Wolverines went on to top Waynesburg, 60-55, with Podkul scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, and Kallock scoring 12.

Men’s basketball

Allegheny: Senior Josh Ratesic (Norwin) chipped in five points and seven rebounds to help the Gators (5-7, 3-3 NCAC) defeat Oberlin, 77-70.

Charlotte: Fifth-year guard Austin Butler (Latrobe) tied a team high with 14 points as the 49ers held off Rice, 67-64, to move to 10-7 overall and 3-2 in Conference USA.

Butler is second on the team in scoring at 12.4 points and also is averaging 6.5 rebounds. He has scored in double figures 12 times this season.

Robert Morris: Junior forward Brandon Stone (Southmoreland) scored a team-high 14 points in the Colonials’ 75-68 loss to Cleveland State. Stone, working his way back into form from an early season injury, made 5 of 7 shots, including a pair of 3-pointers.

Seton Hill: The Griffins put together a big second half but fell short against Pitt-Johnstown, 89-85, in a PSAC West game. Sophomores Sean Dillon and Ryan Meis recorded career highs with 30 and 25 points for Seton Hill (1-15, 1-10), which scored 53 points in the second half.

Dillon made eight 3-pointers and Meis hit five.

Seton Hill has 11 underclassmen and no seniors on the roster this season.

Shippensburg: Grad guard Jake Biss (Latrobe) poured in a season-best 23 points, including three 3-pointers, and also handed out six assists, in a 69-58 win over Lock Haven. Biss is averaging 13.6 points for the Raiders (12-4, 9-2 PSAC).

West Liberty: Sophomore guard Bryce Butler (Latrobe) scored 26 points, his sixth 20-plus game of the season, and also grabbed nine rebounds as the 16th-ranked Hilltoppers (16-2, 10-2 Mountain East) handled Wheeling, 109-85.

Wrestling

Bucknell: Senior Zach Hartman (Belle Vernon), ranked No. 18 in Division I at 165 pounds, won with an injury default, while sophomore Kurtis Phipps (Norwin) also won his match at 133, as the Bison defeated Sacred Heart, 43-9.

When Bucknell followed with a 23-13 win over Drexel, Hartman moved to 17-3 with a decision, while Phipps earned his 16th win of the season with a major decision. He has an 11-0 dual record.

Gannon: Senior 125-pounder Jacob Dunlop (Belle Vernon) picked up a 13-2 win to move to 12-2 for the season as the Golden Knights rallied past Mercyhurst, 25-17.

Pitt: Redshirt senior Micky Phillippi (Derry), ranked seventh in the country at 133 pounds, posted a technical fall over No. 13 Jake Wentzel in an ACC title rematch, as No. 18 Pitt downed Virginia, 20-15, in the conference opener.

Pitt (6-3, 1-0) was coming off an upset of No. 6 Arizona.

Washington & Jefferson: Senior Jaden Datz (Southmoreland) recorded a pin at 174 pounds as the Presidents rolled over Waynesburg, 43-9. Datz is 19-3 for the season.
