Westmoreland campus clippings: Seton Hill men earn OT victory over Clarion
And you thought McKenna Magic was just a thing for the women’s basketball team at Seton Hill.
The men’s team found a little extra to muster a highlight in what has been a dim season Saturday with a dramatic win.
Anticipation served the Griffins well in clutch time.
Sophomore guard Ryan Meis connected on a jumper from the top of the key with 2 seconds remaining in overtime to lift Seton Hill to a 93-92 win over visiting Clarion at the McKenna Center.
Six players scored 20 or more points in the thrilling PSAC game, including Meis, who had 22. He and junior teammate Jimmy Moon (25 points, 12 rebounds) each made four 3-pointers, while junior Samuel Tabe scored 20, and sophomore Sean Dillon added 11 points and 12 rebounds.
The teams combined for 18 3-pointers.
After losing six games in a row, the Griffins (3-16, 3-11 PSAC) won 2 of 3 heading into a quick rematch with Clarion (7-10, 3-9) Monday.
Men’s basketball
Bethany: Junior guard Asa Klimchock (Greensburg Central Catholic) had 11 points, eight rebounds and three assists as the Bison edged past Saint Vincent, 57-56. He converted an old-fashion three-point play to cut the Bearcats’ lead 53-51 with 5:16 to go.
Klimchock leads the team with a 13.4 scoring average.
Pitt-Greensburg: Junior JoJo France had 20 points, while Jaylen Williams and Reggie Priah had 13 apiece as UPG toppled La Roche, 68-54.
Williams also grabbed 11 rebounds, who moved to 6-12 (4-5 AMCC) under first-year coach Chris Klimchock (Greensburg Salem).
Robert Morris: Junior forward Brandon Stone (Southmoreland) had 11 points and seven rebounds in a 62-60 win over Green Bay. He played a season-high 25 minutes,
Shippensburg: Grad guard Jake Biss (Latrobe) had 18 points, six rebounds and four assists to help the Raiders (14-5, 11-3 PSAC) to a 72-58 win over East Stroudsburg.
West Liberty: Sophomore Bryce Butler (Latrobe) put up 17 points and seven rebounds to help the No. 8-ranked Hilltoppers (17-2, 11-2) to a 90-63 win over Davis & Elkins.
Butler is having a career season, averaging 17.3 points and 7.4 rebounds as a full-time starter. His shooting percentage of 60.4 is tops on the team and ranks third in the Mountain East Conference.
Women’s basketball
Grove City: A local pair had a hand in a late surge that carried the Wolverines (11-6, 8-3) to a PAC win.
Senior forward Allison Podkul (Hempfield) completed a three-point play before freshman guard Mara Polczynski (Norwin) came up with a steal during a 10-0 fourth-quarter run as Grove City rallied past Bethany, 78-74.
Podkul also scored on a break off an assist from Polczynski, who made two free throws during the spurt.
Junior guard Megan Kallock (Greensburg Salem) also made a pair of foul shots down the stretch.
Podkul finished with 15 points, eight rebounds and three blocks, while Kallock scored 13 and Polczynski grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Podkul had a career-high 21 points in a 95-32 win over Franciscan. Kallock added 19 in the win.
Kallock was named the PAC Player of the Week after averaging 17 points, 2.7 assists and 2.3 steals during a 3-0 stretch.
Marietta: Sophomore guard Olivia Gribble (Norwin) had 11 points, including three 3-pointers, to pace Marietta (16-3) to a 70-55 win against Otterbein. It was Gribble’s 11th game with double-digit points this season.
Marshall: Freshman Sarah Liberatore (Hempfield) Liberatore had a career game for points (15), minutes (18), rebounds (3), field goals (5) and 3-pointers (4) as Marshall defeated Alderson Broaddus, 88-56.
Seton Hill: After seeing a 10-game winning streak end, the Griffins bounced back with a 74-46 win over Clarion. Four players scored in double figures for Seton Hill (17-5, 11-2): Senior guard Sam Kosmacki (15 points), senior Katie Nolan (12), sophomore Christiane Frye (12) and grad student Cheyenne Trest (11).
Nolan, a recent Division II Conference Sports Information Directors Athlete of the Week, also grabbed 11 rebounds.
Slippery Rock: Redshirt freshman Bella Long (Penn-Trafford) made her first career start and scored eight points to go with four rebounds, but the Rock moved to 10-5 with a 76-66 loss to Millersville in overtime.
Westminster: Senior Magen Polczynski (Norwin) had a game-high 20 points to lead Westminster to a 75-38 win over Thiel.
She had 12 points and three steals when the Titans (10-7, 7-4 PAC) lost to Geneva, 75-73.
Wrestling
Bucknell: Sophomore 133-pounder Kurt Phipps (Norwin) used three minutes and six seconds of riding time to post a 5-0 win, while No. 17 165-pounder Zach Hartman (Belle Vernon), a two-time All-American, picked up a 6-2 win in the Bison’s 21-12 loss to Army, which snapped their seven-match win streak.
Hartman earned a commanding, 10-1 major decision for the Bison in a 17-15, come-from-behind win over Rider, logging 4:08 in riding time, to improve to 19-3.
Hartman has defeated 15 nationally ranked opponents in his career, while Phipps is 12-2 in dual matches.
Thiel: Sophomore Frank Gill (Norwin) won by fall at 174 pounds as Thiel moved to 7-0 (2-0 PAC) with a 42-6 win over Waynesburg.
