Westmoreland campus clippings: Seton Hill baseball continues hot start
Seton Hill baseball powered its way to an upset and continued a hot start.
The top four hitters in the Griffins’ lineup homered as Seton Hill took down No. 10 Millersville, 13-6, to mark its best start since 2012.
The team has risen to No. 1 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Atlantic Regional Poll.
Senior Jordan Fiedor, senior Derek Orndorff, sophomore Jack Oberdorf (Greensburg Salem) and grad student Tommy Pellis (Greensburg Central Catholic) went deep, with Oberdorf launching a three-run blast, as the Griffins moved to 6-0.
Sophomore Owen Sabol (Norwin) and Orndorff had three hits each.
In a 7-0 win over Salem, Oberdorf went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, Fiedor added two hits and Pellis homered again and scored twice. Senior Jared Kollar (Latrobe) picked up the win, with eight strikeouts, to move to 2-0.
Kansas State: Junior outfielder Zach Kokoska (Latrobe) has six home runs in 15 starts this season for the Wildcats (11-4). He hit two out of the park in a win over South Dakota State and connected again as K-State downed Northern Illinois. Kokoska is hitting .283 with 12 RBIs.
Penn State: Redshirt freshman Josh Spiegel (Penn-Trafford) is leading the Nittany Lions with a .346 batting average (9 fpr 26) through eight games. He has three home runs, three doubles and six RBIs.
Women’s basketball
Grove City: Junior forward Allison Podkul (Hempfield) had 10 points and six rebounds, and sophomore Megan Kallock (Greensburg Salem) scored eight as the Wolverines (8-1) ran past Geneva, 101-69, in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinals.
Saint Vincent: The Bearcats advanced in the PAC tournament as coach Jimmy Petruska reached a milestone.
Petruska, in his 10th season, registered win No. 200 of his career as SVC downed visiting Waynesburg, 87-59, in the PAC quarterfinals. Saint Vincent (8-0) advanced to play Westminster (6-4) at home 6 p.m. Wednesday night in the semifinals.
Petruska has guided SVC to the PAC semifinals every year since he became coach, and the Bearcats have made the conference finals five times under his leadership. He led the team to a PAC title and a NCAA Tournament appearance in 2018-19.
Sophomore 6-foot-2 center Ella Marconi led SVC with 20 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks, and senior guard Carlee Kilgus added 13 points, sophomore guard Anna Betz had 12 and sophomore forward Madison Weber chipped in 11.
Betz, who made a trio of 3-pointers, and Weber came off the bench and helped SVC outscore Waynesburg’s reserves, 33-11.
Senior guard Jenna Lafko scored nine on three 3-pointers, and handed out five assists for the Bearcats.
Softball
Cal (Pa.): Freshman Charity Henderson (Southmoreland) hit her third home run of the season as the Vulcans (5-3) defeated IUP, 4-2. She added a two-run blast to help lead Cal to a 14-5 win over the Crimson Hawks. The right fielder went 2 for 4 with four RBIs, and senior shortstop Alexa Pastor (Hempfield) had three RBIs and two runs in the second game.
Saint Vincent: Junior Abbey Ginter went 4 for 4 with a double, triple and three RBIs to pace the Bearcats (1-3) to a 7-5 win over Chatham. Senior Shae Robson added a triple, sophomore Monica Gourley had two hits, senior Johnna Karas (Norwin) and sophomore Mallory Halleck (Franklin Regional) had RBIs in the victory.
Ginter is hitting .538 (7 for 13) with six RBIs.
Seton Hill: The Griffins stretched their winning streak to seven with a sweep of Slippery Rock by scores of 6-0 and 4-0.
In the first game, senior Nichole McClendon had two hits and two runs scored, and winning pitcher Lauren Dellett, a freshman, had an RBI. Dellett allowed one hit and walked one in seven innings.
Dellett and McClendon had two hits each, with Dellett adding a triple, in the second game. Freshman pitcher Logan Hartman pitched a four-hitter.
Dellett was tabbed the PSAC West Pitcher of the Week for the second time in as many weeks.
