Westmoreland campus clippings: Saint Vincent women's basketball receives honors

Saint Vincent pulled in some accolades after another successful and albeit, shortened, season in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

Senior guard Carlee Kilgus was named PAC Defensive Player of the Year, and Jimmy Petruska, in his 11th year at SVC, was tabbed conference coach of the year.

Kilgus averaged 11.8 points, 4.8 assists and 2.0 steals and made the PAC’s all-tournament team. The Bearcats limited opponents to 60.6 points and 32.9% shooting.

Petruska, also the PAC’s top coach in 2014-15, helped SVC to a 65-61 win over Washington & Jefferson for the title. He won his 200th game in March.

Jenna Lafko, a senior guard at Saint Vincent, joined Kilgus on the first team.

Men’s basketball

Grove City: Senior guard Justice Rice (Monessen) of the PAC runner-up Wolverines was named first-team All-PAC. Rice averaged 14.0 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists for the Wolverines (8-4) and had 25 points in a semifinal win over Geneva.

Rice went over 1,000 career points in the PAC title game.

Men’s soccer

Indiana: Freshman Nate Ward (Greensburg Central Catholic) has made three starts for the Hoosiers and has a goal and an assist. His goal came in a 3-0 win over Northwestern.

Presbyterian (S.C.): Freshman Connor Hudson (Franklin Regional) made his college debut and helped the team to a 1-0 victory over Radford.

Saint Vincent: Junior Roberto Fulweiler and freshman reserve Joel Quiroz Mansilla each scored a goal, and sophomore Shane Piper (Mt. Pleasant) had three saves in goal as the Bearcats held off Franciscan, 2-1.

Women’s soccer

Pitt: Freshman defender Eva Frankovic (Norwin) has played in eight games this season for the Panthers, who set a school record for wins with 11.

Saint Vincent: Junior midfielder Hannah Irvine scored the winner in overtime as the Bearcats edged Franciscan, 2-1. Irvine and junior Lauren May each had a goal and an assist in the win for SVC (1-1-1).

West Virginia: Redshirt sophomore Mackenzie Aunkst (Penn-Trafford) has started all 11 games and has a pair of shots on goal for the Mountaineers (9-2), who have only allowed 11 goals all season.

Hockey

Ohio: Sophomore forward JT Schmizzi (Hempfield) had two goals as the Bobcats defeated Iowa State, 3-1.

Men’s track & field

Seton Hill: The Griffins posted a number of first-place finishes at the Lock Haven Early Bird event. Junior Samuel Hartman broke two program records and a stadium record as he won the 110-meter hurdles in a stadium-record time of 14.23 seconds, and he also won the 400 hurdles (52.60). Sophomore Zakharee Williams (Latrobe) won the 200 (22.67), sophomore Hunter Martin (Belle Vernon) won the long jump (7.16 meters) and freshman Levi Mayer took first in the shot put (14.81 meters).

Hartman’s efforts earned him PSAC Athlete of the Week honors.

Waynesburg: Sophomore Andrew Kemerer (Yough) placed fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 11.93 meters at the Bethany Invitational.

Women’s track & field

Seton Hill: Junior TerryLee Talasky won the 400-meter run in 59.21 seconds, and teammate Sarah Johnson, a grad student, took first in the 400 hurdles (1:05.16), junior Alexis Cunningham won the 1,500 (4:57.22), junior Sydney Wolf took the 3K, and senior Kristen Greggerson was first in the hammer throw (42.68 meters) at the Lock Haven Early Bird.

The Griffins’ 1,600 relay also was a winner, in 4:10.58.

Waynesburg: Freshman Joula Anderson (Greensburg Salem) placed sixth in the 5,000-meter run at the Bethany Invitational with a time of 20 minutes, 58.82 seconds.

Men’s golf

Grove City: Senior Zack Spang (Hempfield) shot 86 to finish 22nd at the season-opening Thiel Invitational.

Women’s lacrosse

Saint Vincent: Junior attacker Joey Smith was named the PAC Offensive Player of the Week as she tallied five goals and eight assists across a pair of wins. The conference assists leader had a career-bet six helpers in an 18-4 win over Thiel.

Seton Hill: With a 4-0 start, he Griffins moved into the No. 24 spot in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Division II Top 25. Individually, senior Taylor Fox-Trundel was named PSAC West Athlete of the Week after a four-goal, four-assist performance in a 15-12 win over No. 22 Mercyhurst.

Waynesburg: Sophomore Eve O’Sullivan (Latrobe) had three points on two goals and one assist in an 18-9 win over Bethany.

Men’s lacrosse

Seton Hill: A head-turning 18 players scored for the Griffins (4-1) in a 25-5 victory over Wheeling. Sophomore Peyton Gensler led the way with five goals, and seniors Zack Estabrooks, Robert Hofseth and junior McGarity Harper netted two apiece.

Women’s swimming

Clarion: Freshman Corina Paszek (Penn-Trafford) won the 50-yard freestyle in a season-best 26.05 seconds in a 159-93 loss to Duquesne.
