Westmoreland campus clippings: Pitt-Greensburg's Sidney McCully earns pair of AMCC honors
Senior Sidney McCully is one of those players who makes an impact on both ends of the basketball court.
The coaches in her team’s conference second that assertion.
McCully, a point guard at Pitt-Greensburg, picked up a pair of awards for her standout play as she was named the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference co-player of the year, and defensive player of the year.
McCully averaged 18.4 points and led the conference with 72 steals. She also provided 7.9 rebounds and 4.6 assists.
She scored her 1,000th career point in the AMCC quarterfinals.
McCully also was a first-team pick, while sophomore guard Melina Maietta (Greensburg Central Catholic) was named to the second team.
Maietta averaged 16.4 points and was a consistent 3-point threat. She made eight 3s in a game for a school record for UPG (14-13).
Women’s basketball
Illinois-Springfield: Guard Brianna Zajicek (Norwin) was named to the Great Lakes Valley Conference All-Freshman Team.
Zajicek averaged 12.8 points, the top average for a freshman, and also contributed 39 steals.
Marietta: Junior guard Olivia Gribble (Norwin) was an All-Ohio Athletic Conference honorable mention selection.
Gribble was leading the team in scoring at 9.5 points per game and had made 47 3-pointers, which put her third in the conference in that category, heading into the postseason.
Gribble had 10 points as the Pioneers rallied past Eastern Connecticut State, 61-57, in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament in Ithaca, N.Y. She played 26 minutes off the bench in a 44-42 win over Ithaca in the second round as the team earned its first Sweet 16 appearance.
Seton Hill: Junior guard Christiane Frye was named to the All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference first team.
The conference freshman of the year last season, Frye averaged 16 points per game and 3.5 rebounds. She had a career-high 39 points against Edinboro.
Men’s basketball
Pitt-Greensburg: Senior guard JoJo France made the All-AMCC first team after leading UPG in scoring.
France averaged 19.6 points per game and led the Bobcats with 66 3-pointers. He finished with 1,167 career points.
Bobcats junior forward Reggie Priah was a third-team selection. He averaged 13.1 points and 6.2 rebounds for UPG (12-14).
Seton Hill: Samuel Tabe was named to the All-PSAC West second team. The senior forward averaged 16.4 points and 8.2 rebounds to pace the Griffins (16-13), who had their first winning season since 2013-14 under first-year coach Ben Wilkins.
West Liberty: Bryce Butler (Latrobe) and the Hilltoppers are going dancing again after another conference championship.
Butler was named tournament MVP after posting his fourth straight double-double as West Liberty defeated Fairmont State, 112-82, for its second straight Mountain East Conference title.
Butler had a game-high 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the win. He averaged 20.6 points, 12.7 rebounds and 4.3 assists in the tournament for the top-seeded Hilltoppers (28-3), who received an automatic bid into the NCAA Division II Tournament.
Butler had 18 points, 10 rebounds and four assists in a 96-72 win over Concord in the quarterfinals.
Wrestling
Army: Freshman Ethan Berginc (Jeannette/Hempfield) finished fourth at the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships to qualify for the NCAA Championships for the first time.
Berginc is ranked No. 13 in the country at 125 pounds.
The NCAA tournament is set for March 16-18, in Tulsa Okla.
Bucknell: Junior Kurt Phipps (Norwin) finished seventh at 133 pounds at the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships at The Palestra in Philadelphia.
He earned a pin over No. 8 seed Hunter Adrian in his placement match to finish 3-2 in the event.
Iowa: Redshirt senior Spencer Lee (Franklin Regional) was voted as the Big Ten Wrestler of the Year for the third time in his career after he won his third Big Ten Conference title at 125 pounds.
Lee was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the tournament. He won an 8-2 decision over Nebraska’s Liam Cronin, the No 2 seed, in the finals. The win was Lee’s 55th consecutive victory.
He also cruised to a pair of wins — technical falls by 17-0 and 20-2.
Lee, who is 17-0 this season, will now give chase to his third NCAA championship.
Pitt: Redshirt senior Micky Phillippi (Derry) finished as the runner-up at 133 pounds at the ACC Championships at North Carolina State.
He reached his fifth straight conference final.
Redshirt junior Colton Camacho (Franklin Regional) took third at 125.
Men’s indoor track and field
Allegheny: Senior Jacob King (Latrobe) took 13th in the weight throw with a distance of 15.47 meters at the Ohio Northern Polar Bear final qualifier in Ada, Ohio.
Grove City: Junior Gabe Dunlap (Penn-Trafford) finished 19th with the 800-meter relay in 1 minute, 33.76 seconds, at the All-Atlantic Region Track and Field Conference Championships at the Armory in New York City.
He also came in 21st in the long jump (19 feet, 2 inches).
Women’s indoor track and field
Duquesne: Junior Hannah Seitzinger (Belle Vernon) won the 500-meter run and helped the 1,600-meter relay to a fifth-place finish, at the ECAC/IC4A Championships in Boston.
Seitzinger took the 500 in 1:13. She joined junior Faith Mucci (Latrobe) on the relay, which posted a time of 3:46.20, the third-fastest in program history.
Softball
Allegheny: Sophomore Sophia Godzak (Belle Vernon) was named the PAC Hitter of the Week.
She batted .538 with a .647 on-base percentage and five RBIs during the Gators’ 3-1 start.
Godzak had three hits, including a two-run double in a 10-9 win over Gordon.
She added three hits against Russell Sage.
Penn State: Grad student Bailey Parshall (Belle Vernon) was named the Big Ten Conference Pitcher of the Week after a big weekend at the Pirate-Spartan Classic in Virginia Beach.
Parshall tossed two complete games and did not allow an earned run while striking out 14 and walking two. PSU defeated Delaware, 11-1, and Hampton, 8-1.
Hockey
Saint Vincent: The Bearcats made a run to the College Hockey East Division III championship game with a 4-2 win over No. 1 seed Kent State in the semifinals.
Zachary Motil had two goals and Vince Amatucci (Latrobe) made a head-turning 70 saves.
They fell to Cal (Pa.), 5-3, in the title game.
