Westmoreland campus clippings: Pitt-Greensburg women rally past Alfred State

What’s a trip to New York without a little excitement?

Freshman Madison Scalese made two free throws with one second remaining as the Pitt-Greensburg women’s basketball team rallied from a 10-point deficit in the final 6:58 to defeat host Alfred State, 66-65.

Senior Sidney McCully had 16 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists, sophomore Melina Maietta (Greensburg Central Catholic) added 16 points, while freshmen Chloe Lukondi (Norwin) and Kayla Hoehler chipped in 12 and 10 points in the win for UPG (6-7, 2-0 AMCC).

McCully was named the AMCC player of the week.

Women’s basketball

Florida Tech: Sophomore guard Sarah Liberatore (Hempfield) had 14 points, including 7 of 10 free throws, but Florida Tech fell to Palm Beach Atlantic, 70-65.

Grove City: Senior guard Megan Kallock (Greensburg Salem) had 12 points and sophomore guard Mara Polczynski (Norwin) added 11 in a 94-35 runaway victory over Thiel.

Both girls added five steals.

In a 68-58 win over Allegheny, Kallock had a game-high 23 points and Polczynski had 11 points, six assists and five steals.

Marietta: Junior guard Olivia Gribble (Norwin) scored a team-high 14 points and made a trio of 3-pointers in a 66-63 win over Wilmington (Ohio).

Saint Vincent: Senior center Ella Marconi had eight points and eight rebounds to pace the Bearcats to their fifth straight victory, 47-42 over Bethany, to move to 9-3 overall and 7-2 in the PAC.

Seton Hill: The Griffins (10-6, 3-4) broke a three-game losing skid with a 66-49 win over Clarion.

Grad forward Alie Seto had 16 points and nine rebounds, freshman guard Hallie Cowan added 14 points and junior forward Sakeria Haralson had nine points and 11 rebounds in the victory.

Westminster: Sophomore Mackenzie Powell (Penn-Trafford) had 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting to help the Titans to a 78-63 victory over Geneva in PAC action.

Men’s basketball

Cal (Pa.): Sophomore forward Kadyn Hannah (Franklin Regional) was one of six players to score in double figures, with 11 points off the bench, as the Vulcans defeated Clarion, 86-68, to open PSAC West play.

Carlow: Sophomore guard Riley Comforti (Southmoreland) had 12 points and eight rebounds, and freshman Brevan Williams (Greensburg Central Catholic) added 11 points, four rebounds and three blocks, as the Celtics fell to midway, 74-53.

Delaware State: Senior Brandon Stone (Southmoreland) is leading the Hornets with a 12-point scoring average and 5.1 rebounds through 12 games.

Pitt-Greensburg: Senior guard JoJo France scored a game-high 26 points and moved into second place on Pitt-Greensburg’s all-time scoring list with 1,550 career points, as the Bobcats defeated host Alfred State (N.Y.), 78-65, for their first AMCC win of the season.

He was named the AMCC player of the week.

France surpassed Rocco Contristano (1,538) on the scoring list.

Jason Trout (Greensburg Salem) holds the school record with 2,160 points.

Junior Reggie Prish had 22 points and freshman Armend Karpuzi chipped in 11 points for UPG (5-8, 1-1).

Seton Hill: Five Griffins scored in double figures in a 90-68 victory over Clarion. Junior Sean Dillon had 19 points, junior Ryan Meis added 14, junior Caleb Whitaker 12, senior Samuel Tabe 12 (and 12 rebounds) and senior Jimmy Moon 10.

Seton Hill moved to 7-6 overall and 2-5 in the PSAC West.

West Liberty: Junior Bryce Butler (Latrobe) tied a game-high with 24 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished three assists, to lead the No. 9-ranked Hilltoppers to an 88-73 victory over Glenville State.

York: Grad student Sean Kelly (Penn-Trafford) has started all 14 games and is averaging 5.4 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists a game.

Men’s volleyball

Penn State: Senior 6-foot-6 opposite-side hitter John Kerr (Derry) had a career day as the fourth-ranked Nittany Lions defeated No. 13 Ohio State, 3-1.

Kerr posted 21 kills and hit .545 for Penn State (2-0). He added five blocks, four digs and an ace.

Kerr’s previous high for kills was six, set the previous night against Central State.

Men’s lacrosse

Seton Hill: The Griffins are ranked No. 12 in the USA Lacrosse Magazine Preseason Top 20.

Last season, Seton Hill finished 13-7 after winning their third straight Great Midwest Athletic Conference title and reaching the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in a row.

Women’s lacrosse

Seton Hill: After winning their second PSAC West title in a row, the Griffins will start the season ranked No. 13 team in the country in the USA Lacrosse Magazine Preseason Top 20 Poll. Seton Hill reached the NCAA Tournament and finished 14-5.
