Penn-Trafford grad Anthony Sherwin competes with Bucknell during the 2022 season.

Breakout sophomore Anthony Sherwin has become known for his smooth glove in the middle of Bucknell’s infield.

It’s no exaggeration to say the Penn-Trafford graduate is one of the top shortstops in the country.

He is, after all, on the Brooks Wallace Award watch list, an honor reserved for the top 100 shortstops in Division I.

The award is named for former Texas Tech shortstop Brooks Wallace and honors “outstanding defensive play, as well as prowess at the plate.”

Sherwin was batting .339 and was leading the Patriot League in runs scored (32), was fourth in hits (39) and on-base percentage (39%).

He had 20 hits all of last season.

Back to that glove: Sherwin’s fielding percentage is a crisp .973. He had helped turn 19 double plays through 34 games for the Bison (16-19).

He has started 60 of 61 games in his budding college career.

Baseball

Allegheny: Sophomore pitcher Garrett Senchur (Norwin) earned a win in relief, working 1 2/3 innings without allowing a hit, as the Gators defeated Penn State Behrend, 5-4. Senchur had a 1.59 ERA in five appearances.

Another local pitcher, junior Bobby Kusinsky (Penn-Trafford) worked 3 1/3 innings of relief and earned his seventh win on the season (7-1) in an 11-5 win over Wooster. He gave up two hits and one earned run.

Grove City: Sophomore Lucca Baccari (Penn-Trafford) was batting .324 with 34 hits, 25 RBIs and 13 runs for the Wolverines.

Saint Vincent: Another day, another PAC win for the Bearcats.

And this one was extra impressive.

The Bearcats took down conference power Washington & Jefferson, 2-1, in 11 innings in a thriller in Latrobe. The victory snapped the Presidents’ 17-game winning streak and made the Bearcats the hottest team in the PAC.

The Bearcats have won a school-record 16 games in a row.

Junior Jordan Sabol (Penn-Trafford) raced home to score the winning, unearned run after an error at shortstop with one out.

Freshman John Evans made a leaping catch at the fence to prevent a home run and keep the score tied 1-1 in the 10th inning.

Sophomore Billy Perroz (Kiski Area) had two hits for the Bearcats, who saw junior pitcher Aaron Stephan work 7 2/3 innings in relief to earn the win.

Wins of 10-1 and 19-7 against Waynesburg followed as Sabol went 3 for 4 with three doubles and four RBIs, senior Ben Menarchek had three hits, grad student TJ Dailey tripled, homered and drove in three in the first game.

In Game 2, sophomore Julian Santana had three doubles.

Saint Vincent (20-9, 16-3) was 4-8 on April 2 before its hot streak followed.

Washington & Jefferson: Junior Tyler Horvat (Penn-Trafford) went 4 for 7 with a run and earned a pitching win as the Presidents swept a doubleheader from Grove City by scores of 3-2 and 5-3.

He won the second game as he struck out four and walked one while allowing five hits.

Waynesburg: Sophomore Mike Bell (Yough) was slashing .241/.383/.345 for the Yellow Jackets (9-21) through 29 games. He had as many RBIs as runs scored (14).

A utility man, Bell had five appearances on the mound and had 10 strikeouts and six walks in 16 2/3 innings.

Westminster: Sophomore Donnie Shimko (Latrobe) has made three starts for the Titans. Shimko plays second base.

Westmoreland County Community College: Freshman Brayden Patton (Hempfield) and freshman Aidan McLaughlin (Norwin) drove in three runs each, and freshman Logan Gustafson (Latrobe) made a highlight catch in the outfield as WCCC (6-15) defeated CCAC, 10-6.

Softball

Allegheny: Freshman Sophia Godzak (Belle Vernon) hit her first collegiate home run in a 3-2 win over Denison.

Cal (Pa.): Sophomore right fielder Charity Henderson (Southmoreland) and senior second baseman Alexa Pastor (Hempfield) had RBI singles in a 2-1 win over Pitt-Johnstown.

Gannon: Sophomore Rebecca Tatone (Latrobe) earned her third save of the season in the first game of a doubleheader against Clarion and picked up her sixth win in the second as the Golden Knights swept the Golden Eagles.

She struck out six and gave up one run in five innings.

Marist: Junior pitcher Kiley Myers (Latrobe) allowed two hits and one run across five innings as the Foxes defeated Siena, 9-1.

Mercyhurst: Sophomore Morgan Hilty (Penn-Trafford) improved to 11-5 with a complete-game, three-hitter as the Lakers defeated Slippery Rock, 7-2. She struck out five, walked five and allowed one earned run.

Penn State: Senior Bailey Parshall tossed her 15th complete game of the season and earned her 17th win as the Nittany Lions defeated Rutgers, 4-3. Parshall tied her season high with 12 strikeouts.

Pitt-Johnstown: Redshirt senior Olivia Porter (Southmoreland) is hitting .333 with 20 runs scored and 12 RBIs in 31 games.

Robert Morris: Sophomore pitcher Jane Garver (Ligonier Valley) upped her record to 4-2 with a 4-1 win over Purdue Fort Wayne. She gave up four hits and struck out nine.

Seton Hill: The Griffins (31-8, 8-4) are on a four-game winning streak after a strong weekend.

They took two from Clarion. In a 5-3 win in Game 1, grad pitcher Morgan Ryan (Hempfield) tossed a complete-game three-hitter with seven strikeouts and three walks, and senior Morgan Toal homered, doubled and drove in three runs.

In the second game, a 2-0 victory, freshman Chloe Elliott delivered a nine-strikeout, two-walk four-hitter, and grad student Jenna Osikowicz (Hempfield) went 2 for 3 with an RBI.

A two-game sweep of Pitt-Johnstown followed. Ryan earned her 13th win, sophomore Lauren Dellett had a save and freshman Brooklyn Fukishima had three hits in a 5-3 victory. Game 2 was a 3-0 win that saw Elliott and Dellette combine on a three-hitter.

Elliott has seven strikeouts. She was named the PSAC West Pitcher of the Week.
