Westmoreland campus clippings: Penn-Trafford grad Anthony Sherwin makes big impact at Bucknell

Penn-Trafford grad Anthony Sherwin competes with Bucknell during the 2022 season.

Sophomore Anthony Sherwin has become a fixture in the Bucknell baseball lineup.

The shortstop out of Penn-Trafford started 30 games as a freshman, and is the leading hitter this season for the Bison.

Sherwin was hitting .362 with .954 and .486 on-base and slugging percentages, respectively. He had a team-best 38 hits, nine doubles and 28 runs.

His 51 total bases also were tops for Bucknell (12-15).

Sherwin went 12 for 18 in a four-game series against Navy, with two doubles, a triple, five runs and five RBIs.

He tripled and scored twice in a recent 7-6 loss to Penn State.

Baseball

Gannon: Deven Judy (Belle Vernon), a redshirt senior, is 3-1 with a 4.40 ERA in five appearances. He has 35 strikeouts against just five walks.

Mercyhurst: Freshman pitcher Jake Bazala (Norwin) picked up his second save of the season as the Lakers edged Pitt-Johnstown, 1-0. He worked two innings, allowing two hits, striking out two and walking a pair in relief of freshman Aiden Kelly.

Penn State: Redshirt junior Josh Spiegel (Penn-Trafford) was batting .279/.453/.813 for the Nittany Lions trough 26 games.

The first baseman had two home runs, a team-best seven doubles, 12 runs and 12 RBIs. He doubled twice and drove in a run in a 7-6 victory over Bucknell.

Pitt-Greensburg: The Bobcats snapped a 16-game losing streak with a 16-5 victory over Penn State Behrend. Senior Devin Renzi went 3 for 3 with a home run, freshman Alex Borges went 3 for 5 with a double and two RBIs, while fifth-year Jacob Davey and junior Michael Sullivan Jr. each scored three runs in the team’s first win of the season.

Potomac State: Through 26 games, sophomore Josh Hoffman (Belle Vernon) was slashing .384/.461/.686. He had a team-best six home runs, 25 runs scored and 20 RBIs. He went 4 for 5 with a pair of RBIs in a 14-13 win over Marietta.

Rutgers: Fifth-year pitcher Jared Kollar (Latrobe) moved to 6-0 as the Scarlet Knights defeated Nebraska, 7-5. He went six innings, allowed two hits, struck out five and walked four on 100 pitches.

Saint Vincent: A doubleheader-sweep of Geneva pushed the Bearcats’ winning streak to five.

Senior Casey Jones and freshman Devin Bonine combined on a two-hit shutout in the first game, a 12-0 victory that saw SVC score nine times in the fifth inning.

Sophomore Billy Perroz (Kiski Area) homered, grad student TJ Dailey tripled and senior Zach Berberich doubled, while sophomore Julian Santana had two hits and three RBIs for the Bearcats. Dailey, Santana and junior Zack VonStein all scored twice.

In a 6-1 win in the second game, Sophomore Jeremy Kruezweiser pitched a complete game with 10 strikeouts, four hits and four walks, while Dailey homered and scored twice.

SVC added an 8-2 win over Thiel as senior Justin Wright (Hempfield) went 2 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs, Perroz doubled and Dailey had two hits.

Kruezweiser was named the PAC Pitcher of the Week.

Seton Hill: The Griffins, ranked 13th in the country in Division II, traveled to Altoona’s PNG Field for a nine-inning game against Millersville. Freshman Drew Garth tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Tanner Froehlich in the top of the ninth as the Griffins won 2-1.

The win also saw freshman Jake Orr hit his first college home run and senior relief pitcher Caiden Wood move to 5-0. Senior Nash Bryan picked up his ninth save of the season for the Griffins.

Seton Hill followed with a four-game series against Clarion. Orr delivered a walk-off single as the Griffins won Game 2, 4-3, in nine innings. He went 4 for 6 in the win. Senior Vincenzo Rauso, junior Jack Oberdorf (Greensburg Salem) and senior Brandon Kline each had two hits for the Griffins.

Grad student Neal McDermott (Greensburg Central Catholic) made a highlight-reel catch in center field and made ESPN SportsCenter’s No. 1 play.

Oberdorf homered twice and drove in four as the Griffins (22-7-1) topped Clarion, 7-2, in the third game.

Washington & Jefferson: Junior Tyler Horvat (Penn-Trafford) was named to the D3baseball.com Team of the Week.

Horvat, a utility man who hits and pitches for the Presidents (14-6), tossed 15 scoreless innings and picked up wins over Chatham and Bethany. He threw a complete game against Bethany, striking out five and allowing four hits.

He did not issue a walk in either game.

Horvat added three hits, and sophomore Connor Helm (Franklin Regional) had two hits and two runs off the bench for the Presidents in a 15-1 victory over Waynesburg.

Waynesburg: Sophomore Mike Bell (Yough) went 3 for 5 with three runs scored as the Yellow Jackets won in walk-off fashion, 9-8 in 11 innings.

He singled, doubled and tripled.

Women’s lacrosse

Waynesburg: Junior Rachel Caldwell (Ligonier Valley) scored both goals for the Yellow Jackets in a 19-2 loss to Saint Vincent.

Women’s golf

Saint Vincent: With a score of 434, the Bearcats won the Saint Vincent Women’s Spring Invitational at Latrobe Country Club.

SVC finished 10 shots better than Seton Hill. Freshman Caroline Konieczny and sophomore Alyson Frank tied for second with matching 98s.

Freshman Lauren Barber (Penn-Trafford) of Seton Hill was the individual medalist with an 86.
