Penn State’s Maddie Holmberg, a Hempfield grad, was named the United Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association Mid-Atlantic Region Field Athlete of the Year.

Maddie Holmberg, a Penn State senior and Hempfield alum, was named the United Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association Mid-Atlantic Region Field Athlete of the Year.

She is a repeat winner of the award, which has a lot of words in its name but almost seems fitting in that respect because Holmberg competed in a lot of events.

She won the Big Ten Conference indoor pentathlon and qualified for the NCAA Division I Championships for the third time in her decorated college career.

She won the conference title with a personal-best score of 4,274 points, third-best in the nation and second-best all-time at Penn State.

Holmberg was a first-team All-American in 2018 when she finished seventh, and made the second team last year.

Nationals are set for March 13-14 in Albuquerque, N.M.

Wrestling

Bucknell: Sophomore Zach Hartman (Belle Vernon, 165 pounds) and senior Drew Phipps (Norwin, 197) finished second in their weight classes at the EIWA Championships to earn spots in the NCAA Division I Championships March 19-21 in Minneapolis, Minn.

The finish for Phipps was the best in his career at the conference tournament.

Iowa: Junior Spencer Lee (Franklin Regional 125) was named the Big Ten Conference Wrestler of the Year. Lee won his first Big Ten title and helped lead the Hawkeyes to their first outright team title since 2010.

The top-seeded Lee defeated No. 2 Devin Schroder, 16-2, in the final and will take his No. 1 ranking into the NCAA Championships later this month. Lee is 18-0 and has outscored his opponents, 254-18. He is a two-time national champion.

Ohio State: Senior Luke Pletcher (Latrobe) won the 141-pound title with a 6-5 victory over Nick Lee of Penn State at the Big Ten Championships. Pletcher will now compete in the NCAA Division I Championships March 19-21 in Minneapolis, Minn.

It will be the fourth trip to the national tournament for the two-time All-American. Pletcher finished fourth the last two years. He also was named to the All-Big Ten Team, along with Iowa’s Lee.

Pitt: Redshirt sophomore Micky Phillippi (Derry) will return to the NCAA Division I Tournament after repeating as the 133-pound champion in the ACC.

Phillippi went 2-2 last year at nationals.

Baseball

Saint Vincent: Freshman Johnny Daggs was named the PAC Rookie of the Week. Daggs went 6 for 13 (.462) with seven runs, five RBIs and two doubles over six games for the Bearcats.

Seton Hill: Senior Tommy Pellis (Greensburg Central Catholic) was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week. Pellis batted .421 with six runs, two home runs and seven RBIs over a five-game stretch in Florida.

Softball

Marist: Teammates and former Westmoreland County and WPIAL softball standouts Claire Oberdorf and Kiley Myers swept the latest Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference player of the week honors.

Oberdorf, a third baseman out of Greensburg Salem, was tabbed player of the week, and Latrobe’s Myers was the pitcher of the week.

Oberdorf batted .588 (10 for 17) with 10 RBIs and seven runs scored during a five-game stretch in Lubbock, Texas. Marist went 4-1 on the road trip.

Oberdorf had three, multi-hit games, including a 4 for 4 effort that included a double and a triple against Fairleigh Dickinson. She had five RBIs and a three-run home run in a 5-4 win over Delaware State.

Myers went 2-0 and did not allow an earned run over 11 innings. She struck out 11 and gave up just two hits. In a 9-0 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson, she tossed a one-hit shutout.

Penn State: Sophomore Bailey Parshall (Belle Vernon) was named the Big Ten Conference Pitcher of the Week. Parshall tossed three shutouts at the Clearwater Spring Break Invitational. She posted double-digit strikeouts in all three games, including 14 against Yale, and allowed eight hits.

With 301 Ks, Parshall is eighth on the Nittany Lions’ all-time strikeout list.

Men’s tennis

Pitt-Greensburg: Sophomore Turner Price (Penn-Trafford) was named AMCC Player of the Week. Price won at No. 1 singles and doubles as the Bobcats defeated Medaille, 6-3.

Price is 18-3 in singles this season, including an 11-0 mark in conference matches. He is 9-2 in doubles.

Saint Vincent: Sophomore Josh Boland was named the PAC Player of the Week after he picked up two wins in a 7-2 victory over King’s. He paired up with Jon Oskin for an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles, and also won at No. 4 singles.

Women’s tennis

John Carroll: Freshman Anna Vitale (Greensburg Central Catholic) won three singles matches in the Spring Break Tournament at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.

The team won four times during the event.

Women’s rifle

Tennessee-Martin: Senior Kaitlin Korinek (Penn-Trafford) became just the sixth rifle program member to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships. She posted a score of 593, one off her career high, at a qualifier in Murray, Ky. She led the Seahawks in scoring in seven of 13 air rifle matches this season.

She will join 47 other competitors at nationals March 13-14 at the Memorial Coliseum in Lexington, Ky.

Men’s lacrosse

Seton Hill: Senior attacker Logan Maloni was named the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, and junior keeper Kevin Mo received weekly honors on the defensive side.

Maloni had nine goals and two assists over a pair of wins for the Griffins, who are ranked No. 7 in this week’s USILA Division II Coaches Poll. He had five goals, including the winner against Roberts Wesleyan.

Mo went 2-0 and made 25 saves in the pair of wins.

Hockey

Pitt-Greensburg: The Bobcats’ Division III club team won the College Hockey East M4 Division championship after a 3-2, three-overtime victory over Saint Vincent. Michael Sedlak and Josh Jones scored in regulation for the Bobcats before freshman defender Tyler McCarty-Cogis buried the winner in the third extra period.

Sean McDonald made 95 saves in net for UPG.
