Holy Cross guard Austin Butler (Latrobe) averaged 11.8 pointsm 6.2 rebounds and 2.4 assists last season.

Former Norwin standout Jayla Wehner was in a giving mood during the holiday season.

The freshman point guard for the women’s basketball team at Marian (Ind.), a NAIA school in Indianapolis, put together a career day last week in a home victory.

The floor leader dished out 10 assists in her third start as the Knights toppled Oakland City, 93-45, for their 10th win of 2020-21.

She added eight points in 24 minutes for the Knights (10-5). Wehner has been a steady presence in the backcourt, averaging 4.9 points and 3.1 assists across 15 games with a 1.57 assist-to-turnover ratio.

Holy Cross: Senior Austin Butler (Latrobe) will begin a season with a clean bill of health for the first time since his freshman year. The guard had surgery on a torn labrum in his right shoulder after his sophomore season, then had another procedure this past spring to repair vascular thoracic outlet syndrome in the same shoulder.

Butler did not miss a start, however, and played through the pain and nagging discomfort. Last season, he averaged 11.8 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.4 assists, and topped the 1,000-point mark for his career.

Butler is the only returning player in the Patriot League who ranked in the top 20 in the conference in scoring, rebounds and assists in 2019-20.

Holy Cross will play a 16-game schedule against Patriot League teams. The league will be broken down into three regionalized “mini” conferences.

The Crusaders have not played a game in 10 months and this will mark their latest start to a season since 1944.

Lehigh: Sophomore guard Reed Fenton (Latrobe) had six points and five rebounds as Lehigh opened the season with a 90-89 win over Lafayette. A 6-foot-4 guard, Fenton is coming off a freshmen season that saw him contribute 6.7 points while shooting 40.3% from the field on the way to making the Patriot League All-Rookie team.

He started 27 of 32 games.

Bucknell: Junior Zach Hartman (Belle Vernon), who is ranked No. 11 in the country at 165 pounds, went 2-0 in a season-opening round-robin tournament against visiting Long Island Brooklyn and Virginia Military Institute. He posted a decision and a pin to open the covid-delayed year.

His teammate, freshman Kurt Phipps (Norwin) made his collegiate debut and finished 2-1, including a major decision in the fourth round.

Pitt: Two-time defending ACC champion Micky Phillippi (Derry) opened the season with a 8-3 decision as the Panthers downed Navy, 22-14.

Also for Pitt, redshirt freshman Colton Camacho (Franklin Regional) and redshirt sophomore Luke Kemerer (Hempfield) dropped their season debuts, at 125 and 149 pounds, respectively.

Virginia: Redshirt sophomore Robby Patrick (Ligonier Valley) went 1-1 in his season debut at the Appalachian State Individual Quad in Boone, N.C. He opened with a 6-2 loss to 17th-ranked Thomas Flitz of Appalachian State, but rebounded with a technical fall over The Citadel’s Cole Burke, 16-0 (1:13).
