Westmoreland campus clippings: Norwin grad Olivia Gribble displays shooting touch at Marietta

Olivia Gribble did a lot of winning on the basketball court at Norwin. That trend is continuing in college.

A sophomore guard at Marietta, Gribble has helped power the Pioneers to a 10-1 start.

Gribble is the team MVP; at least she was in a Christmas tournament.

She had a game-high 19 points, on 7-of-12 shooting, as Marietta took care of Carnegie Mellon, 71-63, in the final game of the two-day Jim Meagle Holiday Classic, the Pioneers’ host tournament.

For her efforts, Gribble earned the Lisa Wagner Most Valuable Player Award.

She added eight points in a first-round game as Marietta blasted the College of Wooster, 84-29.

Her performance also earned her Ohio Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week accolades.

Gribble has started all 11 games and is averaging 9.0 points in a team-leading 24.3 minutes. To no surprise, she leads the team with 22 3-pointers.

Women’s basketball

Pitt-Greensburg: Off to their best start since the 2003-04 season, the Bobcats improved to 7-1 with an 81-78 victory over New Jersey City.

UPG trailed 59-50 heading to the fourth quarter before outscoring the host Gothic Knights, 31-19, in the final frame.

Junior Nadege Durand and freshman Sidney McCully led the way with 22 points apiece, while freshman Melina Maietta (Greensburg Central Catholic) added 15 and sophomore Maddie Sitler 14 for the Bobcats.

Durand also pulled down 16 rebounds and Sitler added 12.

Point Park: Grad guard Michelle Burns (Hempfield) was named the River States Conference Player of the Week after a strong performance against Ohio Christian.

Burns scored 27 points, including six 3-pointers, and made 10 of 20 shots in a 63-49 win.

She also pulled down seven rebounds and played 37 minutes.

For the season, Burns is averaging 15.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game for the Pioneers (8-2, 2-3).

She is the program’s all-time leader in assists and has more than 1,500 career points.

Seton Hill: Senior forward Katie Nolan became the 15th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point milestone as she scored 10 in a 91-45 “City Game” victory over Pitt-Greensburg. Six of her teammates also reached double figures in the victory. Nolan was 5 for 5 from the field.

Men’s basketball

Pitt-Greensburg: Senior guard JoJo France was named the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Player of the Week. France scored his 1,000 career point in the Bobcats’ 93-62 win against Franciscan, the fifth UPG men’s player to reach the milestone.

The standout guard is averaging 18.7 points per game.

Wrestling

Bucknell: Senior Zach Hartman (Belle Vernon) and sophomore Kurt Phipps (Norwin) were placewinners at the MatMen Open in Illinois.

Hartman, ranked No. 15 nationally at 165 pounds, finished in fifth place, while Phipps, a 133-pounder, took eighth.

Phipps scored a 9-4 decision over No. 13-ranked Michael Colaiocco of Penn on the way to the medal stand.

Two of Hartman’s wins came against No. 29 Lucas Revano of Penn in the quarterfinals and the fifth-place match. Hartman, a two-time All-American, has 13 career victories over nationally ranked opponents.
