Westmoreland campus clippings: Norwin grad Emily Brozeski wins Atlantic 10 title

Emily Brozeski won the heptathlon in record fashion Sunday at the Atlantic 10 Track and Field Championships in Richmond, Va.

The Duquesne sophomore and Norwin graduate captured gold with a school-record 5,122 points, posting first-place finishes in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and long jump.

She took second in the shot put and 800-meter run.

Brozeski also helped the 400-meter relay to a fourth-place finish (47.76 seconds).

Duquesne finished ninth in the team standings.

Women’s track and field

Cal (Pa.): Junior Malia Anderson (Greensburg Salem) took third in the 800-meter run at the WVU Last Chance Meet with a time of 2 minutes, 13.21 seconds. Her time is the fastest in the PSAC by more than a second.

Seton Hill: Freshman Keelin Becker was named the PSAC Athlete of the Week. She won the triple jump at the WVU Last Chance meet with a personal-best mark 11.4 meters.

Waynesburg: Freshman Megan Barry (Norwin) finished fourth in the javelin at the WVU Last Chance Meet. She threw 32.29 meters.

Men’s track and field

Allegheny: Perhaps the only thing better for Jake Boord (Hempfield) than winning a conference title was winning two conference titles.

The sophomore at Allegheny made it a repeat championship in the javelin at the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships in Oberlin, Ohio. He threw 53.09 meters, the sixth-best mark in the nation.

Duquesne: Junior Matt Busche (Franklin Regional) ran a leg of the third-place 1,600-meter relay at the Atlantic 10 Championships, and also took fourth in the 800.

The relay’s time was 3:17.22, while he finished the 800 in 55.09 seconds.

Women’s tennis

Pitt-Greensburg: For the first time in program history, the Bobcats (15-4) will play in the NCAA Division III Tournament. They will open against Denison Thursday in Cleveland.

Men’s golf

Cal (Pa.): Sophomore Aidan Bushey (Derry) has played in three tournaments and has averaged 79.9 strokes per round.

With a 13-over 227 total, he tied for 57th at the 54-hole West Liberty Invitational.

Gannon: Freshman Michael Wareham (Franklin Regional) posted rounds of 75, 75 and 74 for an 8-over total of 224 and a tied for 34th at the NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Regional.

Penn State Altoona: Freshmen Logan Divald (Norwin) and Nathan Graham (Norwin) will join their teammates in the NCAA Division III national championship Tuesday through Friday at Mission Inn Resort and Club in Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla.

Divald is the second-leading scorer for the Lions with a 78.8 average in six rounds this spring. Graham averaged 83.17 over six rounds.

Pitt-Johnstown: Sophomore Mario Battaglia (Latrobe) shot 11-over 227 over three rounds to finish tied for 49th at the NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Regional in Victor, N.Y.

Freshman Sal Cerilli (Norwin) came in tied for 61st (230). UPJ took sixth as a team.

Men’s lacrosse

Saint Vincent: With a second-half rally, the Bearcats topped Westminster, 10-7, in the PAC semifinals to reach the title match.

Grad student Tyler Condrasky (Norwin) had three goals and an assist, and junior Jordan Billet added three points to lead SVC.

Senior goalie Noah Sperling made 11 saves in the win.

The Bearcats (13-2) lost in the title match to Grove City, 17-4. Junior Andrew Coholich had two goals in the loss.

Seton Hill: Numerous players were lauded for their play this season for conference champion Seton Hill.

Grad student Thomas Hanulak and redshirt senior Zack Estabrooks were named to the All-Great Midwest Athletic Conference First Team, while second-team honors went to grad student McGarity Harper, senior Jeremy Sforzo, senior Christian Krauch, freshman Holden Charboneau, senior Logan Gray, junior Kage Williams and senior Josh Miller.

The Griffins (12-6) won the G-MAC title with a 14-10 win over Mercyhurst. Estabrooks had four goals, while Harper and junior Layne Harich scored three apiece in the win. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Kevin Mo made 18 stops.

The Griffins and Lakers have met in five straight G-MAC finals. Seton Hill also won conference titles in 2017 and ‘18.

Seton Hill learned Sunday night it earned a bid to its fourth straight NCAA Division II Tournament and will be the No. 5 seed in the North Region. The Griffins will travel to take on No. 4 Mercyhurst (11-4) Wednesday.

Women’s lacrosse

Saint Vincent: The Bearcats’ season came to end in the PAC semifinals with an 18-6 loss to Washington & Jefferson.

Sophomore Maggie Edwards (Norwin) had two goals in the loss, while senior Joey Smith had one goal, giving her 53 for the season, along with 60 assists and 113 points.

Her 227 points rank third all-time at SVC.

Sophomore Hannah-Marie Starner finished the season with 131 draw controls, a team record.

Seton Hill: A rematch awaits the Griffins in the next round of the postseason. Seton Hill (14-4) will face West Chester (16-2) in the NCAA Atlantic Regional Tournament. It will be the Griffins’ third straight NCAA trip.

West Chester beat the Griffins, 17-8, in the PSAC semifinals.

The top four Atlantic Region seeds are East Stroudsburg (1), West Chester (2), Seton Hill (3) and Mercyhurst (4).

Washington & Jefferson: Senior midfielder Becca Ghion (Yough) had a goal, an assist and four draw controls as the Presidents defeated Saint Vincent, 18-6, in the PAC semifinals. She added two more scores in the conference championship when the Presidents beat Grove City, 13-5.

W&J has won 11 games in a row.
