Westmoreland campus clippings: Mt. Pleasant grad Sam Napper helps Westminster to PAC title
Junior Sam Napper and his Westminster golf teammates went back to back.
And Napper had the shot of the tournament.
The Mt. Pleasant graduate made a hole-in-one during the final round of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championships and the Titans (892) went on to a 44-stroke victory over Washington & Jefferson.
Napper, who aced the 158-yard 15th hole on the Jones Course at Oglebay Resort in Wheeling, W.Va., shot 81, 74 and 76 in the 54-hole event. The Titans had three of the top four spots on the individual leaderboard. Napper tied for seventh.
Men’s golf
Notre Dame: Junior Palmer Jackson (Franklin Regional) finished tied for third at the ACC Championship at Shark’s Tooth Golf Course in Panama City Beach, Fla. He shot 68, 69, 68 for an 11-under-par total of 205. The Irish took fifth out of 12 teams.
Pitt-Johnstown: Freshman Sal Cerilli (Norwin) and sophomore Mario Battaglia (Latrobe) helped the Mountain Cats earn a trip to the NCAA Atlantic/East Region Championships for the first time in program history.
UPJ is the No. 9 seed in a 20-team field and will play May 5-7, at Ravenwood Golf Club in Victor, N.Y.
Women’s golf
Point Park: Senior Olivia Stawovy (Greensburg Central Catholic) tied for second place at the Grove City Invitational at Grove City Country Club. She shot an 86 to finish a shot off the lead.
Saint Vincent: Freshman Caroline Konieczny finished 10th at the PAC Championships at Cedarbrook Golf Course near Belle Vernon. She posted rounds of 95, 87 and 92 to earn All-PAC Second Team honors.
Seton Hill: Freshman Lauren Barber (Penn-Trafford) earned medalist honors at the Saint Vincent Invitational at Latrobe Country Club. Barber shot 86 and helped the Griffins to a second-place finish behind the host Bearcats.
Baseball
Pitt-Greensburg: Senior outfielder Brody Bonadio was named the AMCC Player of the Week, hitting and pitching his way to the recognition. Bonadio, the Bobcats’ leadoff hitter, batted .565 over a six-game stretch with nine RBIs and seven runs scored.
He also made his first pitching appearance for UPG (3-23) and worked 4 1/3 innings while allowing three earned runs in a 14-12 loss to Penn State Altoona.
Men’s track and field
Westminster: Senior Ryan Beard (Franklin Regional) ran a leg of the winning 400-meter relay team at the Slippery Rock Invitational. The foursome crossed the finish line in 42.37 seconds.
Women’s track and field
Clarion: Sophomore Courtney Kosanovic (Norwin) took third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 12 minutes, 23.24 seconds at the Slippery Rock Invitational.
Junior Jenna Uncapher (Hempfield) finished second in the high jump (1.55 meters) at the Benson/Hodges Memorial Invitational, while freshman Leah Perry (Derry) took fifth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1 minutes, 13.44 seconds.
Uncapher also took fourth in the long jump (5.11 meters), and Perry was seventh in the same event (4.87).
Robert Morris: Freshman Rayna Todero (Franklin Regional) finished third in the triple jump with a mark of 11.18 meters at the Benson/Hodge Memorial Invitational. Host RMU won the team event.
Men’s lacrosse
Grove City: Senior Keith Torrillo (Latrobe) won 12 of 13 faceoffs as the Wolverines took down Bethany, 27-3.
Saint Vincent: Grad student Tyler Condrasky (Norwin) powered the Bearcats (9-1) past Washington & Jefferson with six goals and three assists, while junior Jordan Billet scored four times and junior Caleb Hawkins added three scores in a 17-6 victory.
Seton Hill: Grad midfielder Thomas Hanulak was named to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Division II Team of the Week. Hanulak scored a career-best seven goals and added two assists in an 18-15 win over Frostburg State.
Hanulak added four points in a 28-5 win over Alderson Broaddus, giving him 100 for his career.
Washington & Jefferson: Sophomore Nate Petrarco (Norwin) had a team-high nine ground balls in a 17-16 loss to Thiel.
Women’s lacrosse
Seton Hill: Grad student attacker Jaclyn Frank was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week, while teammate Megan Bunker, a freshman midfielder, was tabbed the division’s top defensive player of the week.
Frank had seven goals and 11 assists, and topped the 100-point mark for her career (104), as the Griffins won a pair of games. She had four goals and six assists in a victory over Gannon.
Bunker had 30 draw controls, giving her more than 200 of those this season. Her 208 draws lead the PSAC.
Washington & Jefferson: Senior midfielder Beca Ghion (Yough) put her ninth goal of the season into the back of the net as the Presidents rolled past Westminster, 18-2, in a PAC matchup.
Waynesburg: Junior Rachel Caldwell (Ligonier Valley) had a goal and assist, and junior Eve O’Sullivan (Latrobe) added a goal but the Yellow Jackets fell to Franciscan, 21-5.
Westminster: Senior Magen Polczynski (Norwin) had a goal and three ground balls, but the Titans lost to Washington & Jefferson, 18-2. She pumped in four goals and two assists in a 15-12 loss to Bethany.
Wrestling
Edinboro: Luke Kemerer (Hempfield), a redshirt junior 149-pounder, announced he is transferring from Pitt to Edinboro.
Kemerer had a 7-9 record last season and is 29-29 in his career.
He will have two years of eligibility remaining.
