Westmoreland Campus Clippings: More accolades for Seton Hill's Pellis

Grad student Tommy Pellis, a Greensburg Central Catholic graduate, earned All-American honors from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

Tommy Pellis could land with a major league organization with the draft looming. The Seton Hill grad student outfielder will have plenty of awards on his resume for the scouts.

Pellis’ latest honor in an All-American nod from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. His career season earned him a second-team selection.

Pellis’ other honors this season include PSAC West Athlete of the Year, and NCBWA and D2CCA Atlantic Region player of the year. He was an All-PSAC West first-team pick and made the NCBWA and D2CCA All-Atlantic Regional teams. Heading into the NCAA Atlantic Regional, Pellis led the fourth-ranked Griffins (34-6) in nearly every offensive category: a .381 average, 51 hits, 49 runs, 14 HRs and 40 RBIs. He was tied in the last two categories with teammate and senior outfielder Derek Orndorff.

Two of Pellis’ teammates also made the All-Atlantic Regional Team: Orndorff (first team) and senior pitcher Ben Vicini (second team).

Orndorff was second on the team with a .359 average, and Vicini was 5-1 as a starter with a 4.53 ERA. He had struck out 64 in 49.2 innings.

Gardner-Webb: Senior Patrick Ferguson (North Huntingdon/Central Catholic) was named to the All-Big South first team. Primarily a designated hitter, he was batting .299 with 13 home runs and a team-best 45 RBIs.

Youngstown State: Senior pitcher Chad Coles (Norwin) finished 2-2 with a 4.33 ERA for the Penguins (32-24), who went 0-2 in the Horizon League Tournament. Coles had 23 appearances and struck out 47 over 35 1/3 innings.

Men’s golf

West Virginia: After his second-place finish at the NCAA Regional tournament, senior Mark Goetz (Greensburg/The Kiski School) improved his final-round scoring average to 69.25, which ranks No. 6 in the nation in NCAA Division I. That is out of 2,283 players.

Women’s track & field

Carlow: Senior Olivia Miller (Ligonier Valley) earned All-American honors after she placed fourth in the high jump at the NAIA national championships in Gulf Shore, Ala. Her winning leap of 1.67 meters tied her career best. Miller also picked up a pair of All-American honors during the indoor season in the high jump and pentathlon when she placed sixth in both events.

The 2020 River State Conference Indoor Field Athlete of the Year, Miller also competed at indoor nationals, in the triple jump. She holds 12 school records (seven indoor and five outdoor).

Women’s basketball

Point Park: Senior guard Michelle Burns (Hempfield) is returning for a fifth year with the Pioneers. Burns, who made the CoSIDA Academic All-American second team, averaged 20.8 points, 5.9 rebounds and 5.8 assists in a shortened, 10-game season and led the NAIA with 3.6 3-pointers per game.

Men’s lacrosse

Seton Hill: Several Griffins were recognized by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association with selections to the Division II All-North Region Teams. Senior attacker Logan Maloni and senior midfielder Thomas Hanulak made the second team, ande senior goalkeeper Kevin Mo was added to the third team.

Maloni, Mo and Hanulak were USILA All-American honorable mention selections.

Maloni also was chosen to play in the 79th annual USILA North-South Senior All-Star Game in Bristol, R.I.
