Westmoreland campus clippings: Logan Wiland carries Seton Hill to victory

Seton Hill running back Logan Wiland needed an ice bath Sunday morning.

The grad student carried the football 38 times and gained 178 yards Saturday in Erie as the Griffins rallied past Mercyhurst, 19-17, for another grind-it-out victory, its first of the season in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

Wiland scored three touchdowns, all in the second quarter, as the Griffins overcame a 14-0 deficit and moved to 3-3, 1-3.

The defense once again was a bright spot as senior Jaylen McDuffie registered 10 tackles and two sacks, senior Narrio Walks added nine stops, and redshirt senior Jayden Emberton-Gaines had eight tackles and an interception.

Junior Dustin Shoaf (Yough) ran for 33 for the Lakers.

Allegheny: Sophomore running back Kyrie Miller (Ligonier Valley) rushed for 40 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries as the Gators lost to Kenyon, 27-13.

Cal (Pa.): Sophomore wide receiver Jackson Daugherty (Ligonier Valley) caught a short touchdown pass as the Vulcans took down Gannon, 38-17. He finished with three catches for 19 yards.

Daugherty now has three touchdowns in his college career.

Clarion: Freshman running back Nathan Roby (Hempfield) produced 111 all-purpose yards, including 66 yards rushing, in Clarion’s 58-21 loss to IUP. He caught four passes for 44 yards.

Grove City: Sophomore defensive back Gabe Dunlap (Penn-Trafford) had in interception for the Wolverines in a 56-7 win over Geneva.

St. Francis (Pa.): Redshirt sophomore Justin Sliwoski (Hempfield) completed 15 of 22 passes for 202 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Red Flash (3-3, 2-0) to a 55-10 win over Long Island.

Washington & Jefferson: Sophomore running back Justin Huss (Derry) rushed for 62 yards, and sophomore linebacker Justin Johns (Franklin Regional) had five tackles as the Presidents downed Saint Vincent, 63-22, to move to 6-0 (5-0 PAC). Grad student receiver Keith Kalp (Mt. Pleasant) had three catches for 94 yards and a touchdown for the Bearcats (3-2, 2-2).

Men’s soccer

Indiana: Sophomore Nate Ward (Greensburg Central Catholic) has played in all 11 games and has an assist for the Hoosiers (7-3-1).

Seton Hill: Seton Hill has a far-reaching roster with players from various corners of the globe. But two American-born player from the WPIAL scored in the team’s latest win.

Sophomore Anthony Panko, sophomore Fletcher Amos and grad student Wilfred Munn each scored a goal as the Griffins (6-3-1, 3-0 PSAC) posted back-to-back wins with a 3-0 victory over Cal (Pa.).

Panko played at Connellsville, Amos at West Allegheny.

Women’s soccer

Akron: Freshman midfielder Sarah Nguyen (Penn-Trafford) has started all 13 games this season and has four assists and six shots on goal. Junior midfielder Sydney Ward (Greensburg Central Catholic) has made nine starts for the Zips.

Davis & Elkins: Freshman Maddie Rose (Norwin) has started all eight games on defense for the Senators and scored her first goal and dished her first assist in a 4-2 win over Fairmont State.

Pitt-Greensburg: Junior Ashley Lucas had a goal and an assist, and senior Tiffany Michalek and freshman Alexa Sheppard also found the back of the net as the Bobcats (10-2, 2-1) defeated Allegheny, 3-1.

Westminster: Freshman Brooke Horvath (Franklin Regional) was named the ECAC Division III South Women’s Rookie of the Month. She was second on the team in goals (6) and was leading the Titans with three winning scores. Horvath also was named the PAC Rookie of the Week again.
