Westmoreland campus clippings: Latrobe grad collecting wins for Rutgers
Jared Kollar has always been effective pitching with a lead.
From his days as a senior ace for Latrobe’s WPIAL and PIAA championship winning team to solid outings at Seton Hill, Kollar was efficent with run support.
That reputation still holds up at Rutgers.
Kollar, a grad student pitcher, saw the Scarlet Knights score six first-inning runs and he parlayed the start into a complete-game win over Hawaii in Honolulu.
Kollar (3-0) struck out eight over seven innings, did not issue a walk and surrendered one run in 87 pitches.
In four starts, he has given up 22 hits and fanned 24 with only two walks over 22 innings while posting a 2.45 ERA.
Baseball
Allegheny: Junior Bobby Kusinsky (Penn-Trafford) is 2-0 with a 2.20 ERA in 16.1 innings for the Gators. He has 18 strikeouts and three walks.
Bucknell: Sophomore Anthony Sherwin (Penn-Trafford) leads the Bison with 18 total bases and has a .297 batting average through 10 games. He also has a team-best seven doubles and seven RBIs.
Mercyhurst: With a 2-0 record in 8.1 innings of relief, freshman pitcher Jake Bazala (Norwin) is seeing time in key situations for the Lakers. He has struck out nine and walked two while allowing just one run. Sophomore outfielder Aidan Shephard (Norwin) is carrying a .278 average and has four home runs, 10 runs and 10 RBIs.
Penn State: Redshirt junior Josh Spiegel (Penn-Trafford) has seven RBIs, seven runs and four doubles in 13 starts for the Nittany Lions. He went 2 for 3 with a home run in an 11-4 victory over VMI.
Seton Hill: A three-game losing streak went by the wayside as the Griffins toppled Notre Dame College, 13-6. Junior Braden Durham and freshman Nate Dorinsky each homered, junior Owen Sabol (Norwin) doubled and junior Jack Oberdorf (Greensburg Salem) went 2 for 4 with three runs scored. Dorinsky, who also doubled, hit a three-run homer and finished with four RBIs. Senior Omar Ward (Derry/The Kiski School) added a double. Five pitchers contributed to the win.
Waynesburg: Sophomore third baseman Mike Bell (Yough) has made five starts for the Yellow Jackets and has three runs and three RBIs.
Westmoreland County Community College: Freshman Dom Koch (Yough) is hitting .526 (10- for 19) through seven games to lead the Wolfpack. He has a pair of doubles and three runs scored. Freshman Ben Anderson (Ligonier Valley) has a. 375 average with a team-best three doubles and five RBIs.
Women’s basketball
Marshall: Freshman guard Sarah Liberatore (Hempfield) decided to enter the transfer portal and is leaving the Thundering Herd after two years. She played in 10 games this season, averaging just 4.1 minutes. She had a career-high 15 points in a win over Alderson Broaddus.
“I just want more playing time and a new environment,” Liberatore said. ” I am super thankful for Marshall, though. It was a great experience and made me better for sure.”
Softball
Georgetown: Freshman Jordan Tallman (Latrobe) is 1-2 with a 5.33 ERA in 10 appearances for the Hoyas. She has struck out 22 and walked 16. She had seven Ks against South Dakota and gave up one run and one hit against Rhode Island.
Mercyhurst: Grad student outfielder Sarah Koscho (Penn-Trafford) is batting .289 with four doubles and six RBIs so far for the Lakers.
Pitt: Freshman Haylie Brunson (Mt. Pleasant) went 2 for 3 with an RBI as the Panthers defeated Houston Baptist, 4-0. Brunson is hitting a team-best .368 with five doubles, a home run and a triple.
Pitt-Johnstown: Redshirt senior shortstop Olivia Porter (Southmoreland) is hitting .333 with four runs and six RBIs through six games. She went 2 for 4 with a pair of runs against St. Michael’s and had a five-RBI game when the Mountain Cats played USciences.
Seton Hill: Grad student Morgan Ryan (Hempfield) tossed a complete-game five-hitter and went 2 for 4, while grad teammate Jenna Osikowicz (Hempfield) doubled twice and drove in two runs as the Griffins blanked Trevecca Nazarene, 5-0 in Winter Haven, Fla. Osikowicz leads Seton Hill with a .489 average (22 for 45) and has 13 runs scored. Senior Morgan Toal (.410) leads the team with five home runs and 15 RBIs.Freshman Brooke Cleland (Penn-Trafford) has made nine starts and has two home runs and 10 RBIs.Ryan is 3-1 with a 1.19 ERA with 37 strikeouts and eight walks in 29.1 innings.
Shippensburg: Redshirt sophomore pitcher Maddie Uschock (Hempfield) is 1-0 in four appearances, including two starts, for the Raiders. She worked 5.1 innings and struck out three in a 9-6 loss to West Virginia State.
Towson: Senior Chloe Poulich (Mt. Pleasant) has a home run and five RBIs in six games.
Women’s lacrosse
Seton Hill: Grad student Jaclyn Frank was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week. She helped lead the Griffins to a pair of wins in Florida. She scored her 100th career goal and collected her 200th career point.
