Gio Vonne Sanders entered the transfer portal looking for an opportunity with another Division I program.
The former St. Francis (Pa.) standout defensive back out of Jeannette has a few bites on the line.
Northeast Conference teams Duquesne and Sacred Heart, who know Sanders well, have offered scholarships.
He recently added two additional FCS offers, from Robert Morris and North Alabama.
Sanders, a team captain when he played in Loretto, had 106 tackles, 5.5 for loss, 14 pass breakups and four interceptions in two years for the Red Flash.
He has two years of eligibility remaining.
Baseball
Grove City: Sophomore shortstop Lucca Baccari (Penn-Trafford) was named to the All-PAC Second Team. Baccari hit .348 and had 27 RBIs. He had 11 doubles.
Penn State: Redshirt junior Josh Spiegel (Penn-Trafford) smacked a three-run home run to the deepest part of the field, as Penn State routed Pitt, 19-6, in a nonconference game at PNC Park.
He finished 2 for 5 with four RBIs and three runs scored for the Nittany Lions (25-25).
Pitt-Greensburg: Senior Brody Bonadio had a career season and was rewarded with an All-AMCC First Team selection. Bonadio batted .392 with 23 runs, 22 RBIs and started all 30 games as the Bobcats’ leadoff hitter.
Junior Will Thorp and grad student Jake Davey were second-team picks
Saint Vincent: Graduate outfielder T.J Dailey and sophomore first baseman Billy Perroz (Kiski Area) were voted to the All-PAC First Team, while junior outfielder Jordan Sabol (Penn-Trafford) made the second team.
Dailey started all 38 games and batted .341 with eight home runs, 10 doubles, 43 RBIs and 40 runs.
Perroz led the team with a .395 batting average and hit four home runs, three triples, nine doubles and had 26 RBIs for the Bearcats, who finished 24-14 and advanced to the PAC Tournament. The team will remember this season for a program-record 16-game winning streak.
Washington & Jefferson: Junior Tyler Horvat (Penn-Trafford) was named to the All-PAC First Team as a utility player. He showed his versatility in the Presidents’ 5-1 victory over Lebanon Valley. He pitched six solid innings of relief to improve to 8-1, and added two hits.
Horvat hit a two-run double in a 14-7 loss to Rowan in the NCAA Division III Regional. W&J bounced back but eventually lost to Rowan in the Annville Regional final, 9-0, to finish the season with 37 wins.
Softball
Penn State: Senior pitcher Bailey Parshall (Belle Vernon) was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Region First Team. Parshall had a career year in the circle, posting a 22-9 record with a 1.68 ERA and nine shutouts in 212 1/3 innings.
She tied the school record for wins in a season, and became the third pitcher in program history to reach 200 strikeouts in a season.
Men’s track and field
Grove City: Sophomore Gabe Dunlap (Penn-Trafford) came in 17th in the javelin at the All-Atlantic Region Conference Championships in Bethlehem. Dunlap, a former Penn-Trafford quarterback, threw 163 feet, 1 inch.
Westminster: Senior Ryan Beard (Franklin Regional) was part of the 400-meter relay team that broke a program record with a time of 40.74 seconds, which is tied for ninth in the nation. The team is set to compete in the NCAA Division III Championships.
Women’s track and field
Saint Vincent: Senior Sydney Green (Latrobe) finished 11th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 18.05 seconds at the All-Atlantic Region Championships at Moravian. Her time is the third-best in program history.
Waynesburg: Freshman Megan Barry (Norwin) finished fifth in the javelin at the Mount Union Last Chance Meet. Her top throw was 103-7.
Women’s lacrosse
Seton Hill: Junior defender Makayla Kintner was named an All-American by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association for the second year in a row.
She made the third team. Kintner led the Griffins with 40 ground balls and 32 turnovers.
