Westmoreland Campus Clippings: Hempfield's Ryan helps Notre Dame to no-hitter
Senior softball pitcher Morgan Ryan made the most of her first start of the season — her fifth at Notre Dame — as the former Hempfield ace contributed to a no-hitter Sunday.
Ryan pitched two innings, struck out two and did not walk a batter as the Fighting Irish (3-0) won at Alabama State, 13-0.
It was Ryan’s second appearance of the season. She worked a third of an inning in a 10-0 loss to Alabama.
Coming into the Alabama State game, Ryan had a career record of 2-2 with a 2.97 ERA and 38 Ks in 66 innings pitched (41 games).
Wrestling
Bucknell: Junior 165-pounder Zach Hartman (Belle Vernon) was No. 7 in the NCAA Coaches’ Panel Rankings, which are used to determine qualifiers for the NCAA Division I Championships. Hartman is 7-0 with two pins and a technical fall.
Pitt: Redshirt junior Micky Phillippi (Derry) is ranked No. 3 in the country at 133 pounds in the latest NCAA Coaches’ Panel Rankings. Redshirt sophomore Luke Kemerer (Hempfield) is No. 28 at 149. Phillippi is 7-0, including 4-0 in the ACC.
Men’s basketball
Washington & Jefferson: Zach Queen (Hempfield), a senior guard, contributed nine points and nine rebounds for the Presidents in a 64-63 win over Westminster.
Men’s golf
West Virginia: Senior Mark Goetz (Greensburg/The Kiski School) posted rounds of 70, 70 and 72 to finish at 2-over-par 212 and in a tie for 48th at the Gators Invitational, played at Mark Bostick Golf Course in Gainesville, Fla. Goetz made 10 birdies on the weekend.
Women’s volleyball
Gannon: Abby Kane (Franklin Regional), a senior defensive specialist, led the Knights with 14 digs in a 3-0, season-opening victory over Georgian Court.
Men’s volleyball
Geneva: Sophomore outside hitter Jake Williams (Norwin) has started all four matches this season and is fourth on the team with 27 kills and also has 23 digs in 16 sets played.
Football
North Dakota State: Pedro Schmidt (Norwin), a redshirt sophomore, entered the NCAA Transfer Portal. A wide receiver, Schmidt played in eight games in 2019, mostly on special teams. He has 12 career appearances but still is looking for his first catch.
