Westmoreland campus clippings: Hempfield grad Jenna Uncapher shines in heptathlon at Clarion
Clarion senior Jenna Uncapher was running all over the place at her latest track and field meet. And jumping.
Uncapher, a Hempfield graduate, scored a career-best 4,247 points to finish fifth in the heptathlon at the Mondschein Multi meet at Kutztown.
The mark is third all time at Clarion.
She took fourth in the long jump, fifth in the javelin, and third in the 800 during the final day of competition.
That came after a fourth-place in the 100-meter hurdles, a tie for first in the high jump and third in the 200.
Her 1.63 meters in the high jump is the fifth-best distance in program history.
Women’s track and field
Arizona: Sophomore Mackenna Orie (Hempfield) took sixth in the shot put with a personal-best throw of 53 feet, 7.5 inches at the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif. She added a third-place finish at the Beach Invitational with an even better mark of 53-9.
Duquesne: Sophomore Emily Brozeski (Norwin) won the 100-meter hurdles in a personal-record time of 14.20 seconds at the Bucknell Classic. She also finished 13th in the long jump.
Sophomore Sadie Wetzel (Latrobe) finished fourth in the high jump (5 feet, 3.25 inches).
Seton Hill: The Griffins’ 3,200-meter relay of senior Sydney Wolf, junior Darby Roth, senior Allison Pittman and senior Alexis Cunningham won a title and broke a school record with a time of 9:38.38 at the Bucknell Classic.
Wolf set a school record in the 1,500 (4:37).
Waynesburg: Freshman Megan Barry (Norwin) won the javelin title at the Thiel Invitational with a heave of 122-1, topping a field of 11 throwers.
Men’s track and field
Allegheny: Sophomore Jake Boord (Hempfield) broke the school record in the javelin with a toss of 62.58 meters at the Bucknell Invitational. He finished second at the meet. The distance, which is fourth-best in Division III currently, broke a record that had stood since 1996 — 62.54 by Warren Phillips.
Chatham: Senior Brett Seich (Belle Vernon) ran to an 18th-place finish in the 400-meter run at the Westminster Invitational. His time was 57.40 seconds.
Grove City: Sophomore Gabe Dunlap (Penn-Trafford) cleared 10-1 to win the pole vault title at the Grove City Mini Meet. He also finished second in the triple jump (41-5.25).
Seton Hill: Senior Sam Hartman won the 110-meter hurdles title at the Bucknell Classic with a time of 14.19 seconds. He also took second in the 400 hurdles.
Also for the Griffins, the 1,600-meter relay team of freshman Gabriel McConville, junior Hunter Martin (Belle Vernon), junior Joe Piper (Latrobe) and junior Zakharee Williams (Latrobe) finished runner-up with a time of 3:19.74.
McConville set a school record in the 1,500-meter run (3:54).
Waynesburg: Junior Andrew Kemerer (Yough) placed fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 39 feet at the Thiel Invitational.
Westminster: Senior Ryan Beard (Franklin Regional) was part of two first-place relays at the Westminster Invitational. He helped the 400-meter relay to a win in 43.19, and the 1,600-meter relay in 3:27.84.
Beard also pitched in to a 400 relay win at the Grove City Mini Meet (42.17). Then, at the Thiel College Invitational, he joined his 400 relay teammates for another victory, in 42.42 seconds.
Softball
Point Park: Junior Angalee Beall (Franklin Regional) was named the River States Confernce Pitcher of the Week. She went 3-0 for the Pioneers, pitching a pair of complete games and saw some brief work in relief.
Beall only walked two over 15 innings. In a 6-3 win over Carlow, she gave up five hits and two earned runs, and did not walk a batter.
Robert Morris: For the second time this season, senior Dana Vatakis (Monessen) was named the Horizon League Pitcher of the Week. She picked up a win and a save for the Colonials, allowing four hits and one earned run across eight innings, a stretch that also included 10 strikeouts.
Vatakis (6-4) has 72 Ks and a 3.04 ERA this season.
Seton Hill: Grad student Morgan Ryan (Hempfield) was named the PSAC West Pitcher of the Week. She went 3-0 and gave up one earned run over 17 innings pitched for the Griffins. In that span, she struck out 23 and walked three.
Men’s lacrosse
Saint Vincent: Junior Jordan Billett put four goals in the net, and grad student Tyler Condrasky (Norwin) added three goals and two assists to lead the Bearcats (8-1, 2-1) to a 14-9 win over Westminster in PAC action.
Seton Hill: The Griffins made it four wins in their last five games with an 18-15 win over Frostburg State. Grad student Tom Hanulak scored a career-high seven goals and assisted two other scores, while redshirt Jack Ellis added three goals for Seton Hill (8-5, 3-1).
Hanulak was named the Great Midwest Conference Athlete of the Week.
Women’s lacrosse
Gannon: Sophomore Kendra Delissio (Franklin Regional) has a 9.98 goals-against average over 283 minutes this season.
Westminster: Senior Magen Polczynski (Norwin) scored a hat trick and assisted on a fourth goal, the fourth time this season she has produced multiple goals, but the Titans lost 12-5 against Thiel.
Seton Hill: Junior Alaina TeSelle recorded a hat trick, and freshman Carleigh Sutfin, junior Hannah Thompson, grad student Jaclyn Frank and redshirt freshman Skylar Orlowski had two goals apiece as the Griffins ran their winning streak to five with a 13-12 victory over Slippery Rock.
Junior Makayla Kinter was named the PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week. She helped the Griffins to a pair of wins, registering seven draws and five ground balls.
Men’s golf
Gannon: Junior Clayton Skoff (Franklin Regional) shot a 76 to help lead the Golden Knights to a victory at the Gannon Spring Invitational at Whispering Woods Golf Club in Erie. Freshman teammate Michael Wareham (Franklin Regional) added a 77 on the way to a team score of 303, 12 shots ahead of Humber.
Skoff tied for third individually, while Wareham was seventh.
Wareham nearly won his next start, at the Mercyhurst Invitational.
He tied for second and his second-round 71 not only tied a tournament low, but it also vaulted him 11 spots on the leaderboard. He posted 78-71 for a 148 total.
Skoff tied for 19th.
Pitt-Johnstown: Freshman Sal Cerilli (Norwin) tied for 21st at the LeMoyne College NCAA Atlantic/East Regional Preview Tournament at Ravenwood Golf Club in Victor, N.Y. He posted rounds of 76 and 77 for a 9-over-par 153.
Sophomore Mario Battaglia (Latrobe) tied for 87th at 18-over.
Men’s tennis
Washington & Jefferson: Freshman Joseph Panahandeh (Greensburg Central Catholic) cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles as the Presidents defeated Thiel, 8-1.
