Westmoreland campus clippings: Grove City's Podkul, Kallock earn all-conference honors
Allison Podkul and Megan Kallock used to play for neighboring high schools.
But now they are college teammates and starters on the Grove City women’s basketball team. And, they’re both all-conference players.
Podkul, a senior forward from Hempfield, and Kallock, a junior out of Greensburg Salem, picked up All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference accolades.
Podkul was named to the first team and Kallock to the second for the Wolverines, who finished 17-9.
Podkul led the PAC in field-goal percentage (49.0) and averaged 11.5 points, 8.7 rebounds, 25 steals and 2.4 assists. The third-year starter posted seven double-doubles.
Kallock averaged 15.9 points and reached double figures in scoring 20 times this season, including a 32-point game against Bethany.
Women’s basketball
Marietta: Sophomore Olivia Gribble (Norwin) had a game-high 15 points with five 3-pointers as Marietta defeated Wittenberg, 65-50, for the program’s first-ever NCAA Division III Tournament victory.
The team lost to Hope College in the next game, 85-66, to finish the season 22-6.
Pitt-Greensburg: Senior Nadege Durand was tabbed the co-player of the year in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference with Ayanna Mazyck of La Roche.
She also made the All-AMCC First Team alongside teammate Sidney McCully, a junior guard.
Freshman guard Melina Maietta (Greensburg Central Catholic) was a third-team selection for the Bobcats, who went 20-6 and lost to La Roche in the conference championship.
Seton Hill: Grad forward Katie Nolan was selected to the All-PSAC West Second Team. Grad guard Cheyenne Trest and freshman guard Christiane Frye were second-team picks.
Westminster: Senior guard Magen Polczynski (Norwin) had 10 points and a career-high six steals but the Titans fell to Penn State Behrend, 77-58, in the ECAC Tournament semifinals to end the season with an 18-10 record.
Men’s basketball
La Roche: Freshman forward Kadyn Hannah (Franklin Regional) was named the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Newcomer of the Year after a breakthrough rookie season. Hannah averaged 15.5 points while shooting 58.9% from the field. He also grabbed 6.3 rebounds.
Hannah had five games of 20 or more points, including 36 against Hilbert.
Pitt-Greensburg: Senior guard JoJo France was named to the All-AMCC Second Team. Bobcats’ sophomore forward Reggie Priah made the third team.
Shippensburg: Grad guard Jake Biss (Latrobe) was named to the All-PSAC East Division First Team for the third straight time. He leads the Raiders in scoring at 16.9 points per game along with 3.7 assists and steals (1.7).
Biss has more than 1,470 career points.
Wrestling
Bucknell: Senior Zach Hartman (Belle Vernon) will make a fourth trip to the NCAA Division I Championships after reaching the third-place bout at the EIWA tournament.
Edinboro: Redshirt freshman Gabe Willochell (Latrobe) qualified for the NCAA Division I Championships after taking third place at the MAC Championships at 141 pounds.
Pitt: Redshirt senior Micky Phillippi (Derry) qualified for the NCAA Division I Championships for the fourth time as he reached the finals at the ACC Tournament. Phillippi competes at 133 pounds.
Softball
Saint Vincent: Freshman Olivia Bushore was named the PAC Rookie of the Week. She won her first college start, hurling a six-inning shutout over Penn State Greater Allegheny. Bushore gave up three hits and struck out 10 in the 8-0 victory.
Women’s swimming
Chatham: Freshman Ali Cowan (Derry) made the All-PAC First Team in the 1- and 3-meter diving events. Her teammate, freshman Maddy Cisco (Hempfield), was a second teamer.
Saint Vincent: The Bearcats had seven women on the All-PAC First Team — freshmen Sarah Alexander and Madison Cassidy (Greensburg Salem) and juniors Sara Basala, Lauren Connors, Katy Kozy, Cata Luallen and Erica Steele (Greensburg Salem).
Freshmen Callysta Fontanazza (Hempfield) and Abby Leskovansky and senior Lauren Krecota made the second team.
Washington & Jefferson: Sophomore Amanda Graves (Penn-Trafford) made the All-PAC Second Team.
Westminster: Junior Baylee Horvath (Franklin Regional) made the All-PAC Second Team.
Men’s volleyball
Thiel: Freshman JC Govannucci (Norwin) knocked down 10 kills for the Tomcats in a 3-2 victory over Hiram in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.
Govannucci added nine kills as the Tomcats swept Saint Vincent, 3-0.
