Westmoreland campus clippings: Greensburg’s Loren Byers caps freshman year at PSU

Loren Byers competes for the men’s tennis at Penn State.

Loren Byers took his place among the starting lineup on the Penn State tennis team and put together a strong freshman season.

Byers, who is from Greensburg and attended Greensburg Salem for one year before attending 21st Century Cyber Charter School, finished 17-10 in singles, and 6-8 playing doubles for the Nittany Lions (13-14).

He won eight times playing in the No. 4 singles spot.

Byers, who redshirted last year, won a tournament in Mt. Lebanon recently that will give him direct entry into a professional tournament in July, meaning he will make his pro debut.

Softball

Robert Morris: Courtney Poulich (Mt. Pleasant) is leaving Liberty to join RMU after one season. The first baseman entered the NCAA Transfer Portal after she appeared in 19 games and scored five runs last season.

Poulich, who will be a junior, committed to Liberty when she was a freshman.

Wrestling

Pitt: Luke Pletcher (Latrobe) was promoted from volunteer assistant to full-time assistant coach with the Panthers’ program. The former Ohio State standout who was a three-time All-American was the No. 1 seed in the 2020 NCAA Championships after winning the Big Ten title, but nationals were canceled because of the covid pandemic.

Pletcher, who has competed professionally with the Pittsburgh Wrestling Club, will get to coach his brother, Jack, who is part of Pitt’s 2022 recruiting class. Jack Pletcher was a PIAA runner-up last season.

Men’s soccer

Saint Vincent: The Bearcats added a pair of assistants to rookie coach Matt Davis’s staff in Diron Duah and Cory Northrup.

A former Montour coach, Duah spent the past two seasons as as assistant at Mount Aloysius, his alma mater where he played for three seasons. He also played two years in the National Premier Soccer League and the Premier Development League, spending the 2019 season with the Atlantic City FC and ‘18 with the Ocean City Nor’easters.

Northrup is an SVC graduate and a four-year member of the soccer team.

Women’s swimming

Saint Vincent: Marissa Frollo was hired as an assistant coach.

Frollo spent the past five seasons coaching Division-I Mount St. Mary’s.

A talented sprinter when she swam at SVC, Frollo was a four-year all-PAC honoree and remains the school’s record holder in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles.
