Westmoreland campus clippings: Franklin Regional soccer alums shine at next level

Colleges have a soccer pipeline going to Franklin Regional and the recruits are producing at the next level.

Sophomore Blake Cooper has been one of the top offensive threats in the AMCC for Penn State Behrend. The midfielder had a team-best 10 goals and six assists for 26 points through 20 games for the Lions (13-2-5, 6-0-1), while senior defender Justin LeDonne had two goals and one assist.

Behrend reached the second round of the AMCC Tournament.

At Grove City, the Kimmich brothers helped the Wolverines finish with a 10-0 mark in PAC play (12-5-1 overall).

The Wolverines were clipped by Bethany in the PAC Tournament semifinals, 4-1 on penalty kicks, after the teams tied 3-3 in 90 minutes of regular time.

Sophomore defender Luke Kimmich had an assist in the match, giving him four on the season to go with a goal. He played in 18 matches, starting 16 of them.

His older brother and back-line teammate, Matt Kimmich, saw time in 14 games and contributed to eight shutouts.

Two other former Panthers helped their teams to conference tournament appearances.

Junior defender Connor Hudson played four games for a unit that had eight shutouts going into the Big South Conference Tournament.

And freshman Zach Lorenz, a forward, has one goal over 13 games for Sacred Heart, which opened the Northeast Conference Tournament with its first Division I postseason win in program history, 1-0 over St. Francis.

Football

Duquesne: Sophomore wide receiver Nick Leopold (Franklin Regional) pulled in his first college touchdown reception as the Dukes (3-6, 2-3) held off Sacred Heart, 35-28, in overtime.

Leopold caught a 20-yard strike in the second quarter.

Sophomore linebacker Gianni Rizzo (Norwin) posted a career-high eight tackles in the victory.

IUP: Sophomore defensive back Toby Cline (Jeannette) returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown but the Fighting Scots lost to Slippery Rock, 28-21.

Old Dominion: Robert Kennedy (Jeannette), a redshirt junior safety, had six tackles and a pass break-up, but ODU fell to Marshall, 12-0. The meeting was a Westmoreland County reunion with Kennedy going against Marshall redshirt sophomore lineman Trent Holler (Latrobe).

St. Francis (Pa.): Redshirt junior Justin Sliwoski (Hempfield) returned to the lineup and led the Red Flash (7-2, 5-0 NEC) to a 38-24 victory over Georgetown.

Sliwoski completed 19 of 27 passes for 257 yards and three touchdowns, and rushed for 34 yards, in the win.

Redshirt freshmen twins Mason and Nate Frye (Penn-Trafford) each had three tackles in the victory.

Saint Vincent: Senior Brady Walker completed 19 of 25 passes for 205 yards and four touchdowns, and junior Molayo Irefin returned the opening kickoff a program-record 100 yards for a touchdown as the Bearcats (4-5) rolled to a 53-16 victory over Bethany.

Sophomore D. J. Gray rushed for 105 yards and a touchdown in 12 carries, and also caught a score. Irefin added two receiving touchdowns and had eight catches for 85 yards.

Junior Max Pisula (Greensburg Central Catholic) scored his sixth rushing touchdown of the season, and sophomore Joanes Polynice forced a fumble on a sack, and returned it for a score.

Sophomore Jaden Pratt and senior Ahmad Shaw each had an interception.

Irefin was named the PAC Special Teams Player of the Week.

Seton Hill: Defense carried the Griffins to their second win of the season. Grad linebacker Jaylen McDuffie was disruptive with 13 tackles and 4.5 sacks in a 7-0 victory over Mercyhurst.

Redshirt freshman Ky’Ron Craggette ran for 90 yards and scored the game’s lone touchdown, while redshirt junior Tyler Bradley went 13 for 20 for 122 yards for Seton Hill (2-5).

McDuffie was named the PSAC West Defensive Player of the Week.

Washington & Jefferson: Junior Justin Johns (Franklin Regional) was a force on defense for the Presidents in a 31-10 victory over Grove City.

The linebacker ripped off a career-high 18 tackles, eight solo, to go with a sack and an interception.

Sophomore tight end Zach Cernuto (Southmoreland) only had one reception, but it went for a 6-yard touchdown.

W&J continues to rework the running game after the loss of junior Justin Huss (Derry) to a season-ending knee injury.

Huss, who battled leg injuries in high school and early in his college career, still is the second-leading rusher for the team with 226 yards on 47 carries.

William & Mary: Junior safety Marcus Barnes (Jeannette) had six tackles as the Tribe (8-1, 3-1) ran their winning streak to five with a 20-14 victory over Hampton.

Men’s soccer

Duquesne: Freshman Anthony DiFalco (Franklin Regional) played 30 minutes in the Dukes’ 2-1 win over LaSalle in the Atlantic 10 Tournament second round. DiFalco, a three-time high school All-American, has played in four games and has three shots for Duquesne (11-3-4).

Seton Hill: Grad defender George Demetriades and junior forward Fletcher Amos were named to the All-PSAC West First Team, while freshman defender Joe Spender, sophomore forward Anton Dupont Linden, grad midfielder Archie Lock, senior midfielder Yuriy Kryskiv and senior midfielder Cal Pritchard were tabbed second-teamers.

Men’s cross country

Cal (Pa.): Senior Mason Jobe (Greensburg Salem) ran to a second straight top-25 finish, placing 25th at the PSAC Championships in Mansfield with a time of 26 minutes, 7.2 seconds.

He earned All-PSAC Second Team accolades.

Women’s cross country

Cal (Pa.): Junior Malia Anderson (Greensburg Salem) earned All-PSAC honors with a sixth-place finish at the conference championships. Her time was 22:30 in the six-kilometer race.

She improved 20 spots over last year to make the first team.

Seton Hill: The Griffins finished second at the PSAC Championship for the second year in a row.

Sophomore Hannah Smrcka took fourth individually, and senior Darby Roth was fifth. They earned all-conference honors.

Women’s swimming

Cal (Pa.): Senior Emily Bednar (Mt. Pleasant) swam a leg of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay as the Vulcans defeated Locak Haven, 149-89.
