Westmoreland campus clippings: D.J. Gray leads Saint Vincent to 1st victory

It wasn’t the prettiest football game Saint Vincent has played, but the Bearcats will take their first victory of 2022.

Sophomore D.J Gray ran for a career-high 118 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries as SVC (1-2, 1-0) held back Thiel (0-3, 0-1), 24-16, in the teams’ Presidents’ Athletic Conference opener in Latrobe.

Junior Molayo Irefin had a touchdown reception and a scoring run, and freshman Justin Emeigh kicked a 34-yard field goal in the victory.

For the defense, sophomore defensive back Ethan Facey made eight tackles and grad defensive back Kyle Coombe had five stops and a sack.

Football

Albany: Junior Scott Houseman (Yough) made his third straight start on the offensive line. The Great Danes put up 527 yards of total offense but lost to Fordham, 48-45.

Allegheny: Junior Declan O’Brien (Norwin) had six receptions for 59 yards but the Gators were tripped up by Westminster, 42-14.

Sophomore quarterback Trevor Brncic (Franklin Regional) saw time behind center in the loss.

Delaware: Fifth-year tight end Braden Brose (Hempfield) caught a 21-yard touchdown pass in a 42-21 victory over Rhode Island.

Geneva: Freshman Ryan Reitler (Greensburg Central Catholic) kicked a 42-yard field goal and three extra points in a 37-30 loss to Waynesburg.

Old Dominion: Redshirt junior Robert Kennedy (Jeannette) had five tackles and a forced fumble in a 16-14 loss to Virginia.

Mercyhurst: Redshirt junior Dustin Shoaf (Yough) ran for 48 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries in a 50-31 loss to Kutztown.

Ohio Northern: Fifth-year kicker Dom DiFalco (Franklin Regional) is 5 for 5 on extra points and 3 for 4 on field goals this season. He kicked a 40-yard field goal in a 37-3 loss to Heidelberg.

Seton Hill: Redshirt freshman running back Ky’Ron Craggette ran for 100 yards in six carries and a touchdown, and grad student linebacker Narrio Walks had a game-high 12 tackles but Seton Hill (0-3) fell to East Stroudsburg, 22-7.

Waynesburg: Senior running back Justin Flack (Derry) ran for 170 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries in a 37-30 victory over Geneva. Flack scored on runs of 49 and 75 yards.

William & Mary: Junior defensive back Marcus Barnes (Jeannette) had an interception and three tackles in a 34-7 victory over Lafayette.

Barnes has three career interceptions.

Men’s golf

Grove City: Sophomore Luke Kimmich (Franklin Regional) finished seventh at the Grove City Fall Invitational at Grove City Country Club. Kimmich, who also plays soccer for the Wolverines, shot 76. The Wolverines’ ‘A’ team finished third.

Penn State Altoona: Sophomore Logan Divald (Norwin) finished 26th and sophomore Nathan Graham (Norwin), 35th, at the Mountain Valley Collegiate Classic.

Divald, who shot 80 in the second round, and Graham played for the Lions’ “B” team in the event and the team finished seventh.

Rhode Island: Sophomore Chuck Tragesser (Franklin Regional) posted his best collegiate by taking third at the VCU Shootout in Richmond, Va.

Tragesser finished the 54-hole tournament at 13-under-par 203, carding a red-hot 65 in the final round.

He was tied for the lead heading to his final hole, but made a bogey to fall out of contention.

His 18 birdies led the 75-man field.

Men’s soccer

Cal (Pa.): Junior Zach Vanek (Hempfield) has a goal, senior Jake Nebinski (Norwin) has an assist, and freshman AJ Visco (Penn-Trafford) is 0-1-1 in goal for the Vulcans.

Duquesne: Anthony Harding (Norwin) is playing a fifth season with the Dukes. A defender who transferred from Pitt, he has appeared in seven games and has one assist.

Penn State Behrend: Sophomore Blake Cooper (Franklin Regional) scored his first goal of the season in a 3-1 win over Waynesburg, then added another score when the Lions defeated Grove City, 3-0.

Pitt-Greensburg: Freshman Caleb Yuricha (Norwin) leads the Bobcats with four goals and eight points through six games.

Saint Vincent: Joel Quiroz Mansilla, Alexander Cruz and David Rahaman each scored, and Shane Piper earned the win in goal as the Bearcats edged La Roche, 3-2. The Bearcats (4-3) carried the momentum to a 2-1 victory over Pitt-Greensburg as sophomore Eduardo Richa and junior David Rahaman found the net, and Mansilla had an assist.

Washington & Jefferson: Sophomore Nolan Agostoni (Latrobe) scored a goal in his first game action of the season, a 3-1 Presidents’ victory over Penn State Altoona.
