Westmoreland campus clippings: Carlow's Millers gets comfortable atop medals stand
Olivia Miller found her comfort zone competing for the Carlow women’s indoor track and field team this season. She also looked pretty cozy atop the medals stand.
Miller, a senior who graduated from Ligonier Valley, was named River States Conference Indoor Field Athlete of the Year for the second straight season after her efforts at the conference championship.
Miller won the long jump in 5.28 meters, and took first in the high jump (1.66 meters). The high jump mark was a RSC record.
Miller also was second in the 60-meter hurdles (9.55 seconds) and triple jump (11.35).
Carlow finished second overall, registering a top-10 finish in every event.
The Champions of Character Award, given to an athlete at each school, also went to Miller.
Point Park: Freshman Allison Plassio (Norwin) ran a leg of the winning the 3,200-meter relay (10:37.76) at the River States Conference Women’s Championship in Logan, Ohio. Plassio also took second in the 800 meters (2:41.51). She earned all-conference honors in both events, and the distance medley relay, which finished third.
Men’s basketball
Carlow: Senior guard Swade Redman (Jeannette) had 10 points and nine rebounds in an 86-64 loss to Ohio Christian in the Celtics’ last regular-season game. Redman was honored on senior day. He is the team’s only senior.
Grove City: Junior guard Justice Rice (Monessen) had a team-high 15 points in a 78-68 loss to Westminster. He leads the Wolverines in scoring with a 12.3 average.
Holy Cross: Senior guard Austin Butler (Latrobe) played one of his best games of the season Sunday on senior day for the Crusaders. He had 23 points, 12 rebounds and six steals, shooting 10 of 18 from the field with three 3-pointers, in a 67-51 win over Army.
Lehigh: Junior guard Reed Fenton (Latrobe) tied a career-high with 19 points, grabbed four rebounds, hit three 3s and made 8 of 8 free throws to lead the Mountain Hawks to a 76-72 win over Loyola Maryland.
Saint Vincent: Senior Shemar Bennett put up 25 points and 11 rebounds, but the Bearcats lost to Thiel, 69-56, to move to 2-2 on the season.
Washington & Jefferson: Senior guard Zach Queen (Hempfield) scored a season-high 13 points and dished out four assists as the Presidents (4-1) handled Franciscan, 97-70. Queen is averaging 8.8 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists. He has started 51 of his 60 college games.
WCCC: Sophomore guard Joel Lonigro (Greensburg Central Catholic) had 10 points and six rebounds in the Wolfpack’s loss to Potomac State, 90-74. Freshman J’akir Hampton led WCCC with 20 points.
Women’s basketball
Grove City: Junior forward Allison Podkul (Hempfield) and sophomore guard Megan Kallock (Greensburg Salem) each scored 14 points to power the Wolverines (4-0) past Westminster, 89-55. Podkul also grabbed seven rebounds, and Kallock hit three 3-pointers.
Podkul added 10 points and seven rebounds in a 72-53 win over Chatham.
Pitt-Greensburg: A pair of former Greensburg Central Catholic teammates have reunited closer to home. Freshmen Gia Scala and Melina Maietta are on the UPG roster for 2020-21. Scala transferred from Point Park.
The Bobcats will open the season March 5 at Penn State Altoona.
Thiel: Junior guard Colleen Trainer (Mt. Pleasant) led the Tomcats with 15 points in a 66-58 loss to Westminster in the PAC season opener. She made a trio of 3-pointers.
Men’s volleyball
Geneva: Sophomore Jake Williams (Norwin) had seven kills in a 3-0 win over Thiel.
Men’s golf
West Virginia: Senior Mark Goetz (Greensburg/The Kiski School) posted rounds of 72, a season-best 67 and 71 to finish at 6-under-par 210, tying him for sixth at the Seminole Intercollegiate in Tallahassee, Fla. Goetz made 18 birdies across the three-day event.
Cross country
Seton Hill: Junior Sydney Wolf won the IUP Welcome Back meet, outdistancing the closest runner by almost 30 seconds with a time of 19 minutes, 3.2 seconds. Her finish led the women’s team to a title.
Senior Benton Bickerton (Southmoreland) won the 3.1-mile men’s race in 16:03.1.
Griffins freshman Izzy Miles finished fourth for the women, and junior Donavin Merriweather was fifth for the men.
Softball
Morehead State (Ky.): Sophomore pitcher Carolyn Alincic (Mt. Pleasant) picked up the win, tossing 6 2/3 innings with seven strikeouts and eight walks as the Eagles held off Norfolk State, 9-5.
Football
Clarion: Former Jeannette leading rusher Kareem Hall will continue his playing career at Clarion. Hall first went to Bowling Green out of high school but later transferred to Lackawanna, a junior college in Scranton.
From there, he earned a Division II scholarship to play at Clarion in the PSAC.
Women’s soccer
Youngstown State: Sophomore defender Kendra Pampus (Norwin) has started two games this season, and freshman midfielder Justine Appolonia (Yough) has three starts and two shots for the Penguins (0-3).
