Westmoreland campus clippings: Breakout game for La Roche's Cole

La Roche senior forward Jenna Cole, a Norwin grad, is the reigning Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Player of the Year.

La Roche’s Jenna Cole had been waiting for a breakout game this season. It finally happened over the weekend.

The senior forward out of Norwin put up a season-best 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds to power the Redhawks (6-4, 6-0) AMCC) to a 61-57 victory over D’Youville.

Cole is the returning AMCC Player of the Year. She is averaging 11.8 points and 4.2 rebounds this season.

Cal (Pa.): Senior guard Monica Burns (Hempfield) scored 14 points, grabbed seven rebounds and added three steals to help lead the ninth-ranked Vulcans (10-2, 4-2) to an 80-57 win against Pitt-Johnstown. She followed that performance with a game-high 25 points, including 12 of 13 free throws, in a 68-59 win over Slippery Rock. She leads Cal in scoring at 15.5 points a game and has made 30 3-pointers. 

Charlotte: Freshman guard Cali Konek (Franklin Regional) scored a season-high seven points, including two 3-pointers, in 21 minutes as the 49ers beat Delaware, 61-57.

Pitt-Greensburg: Senior Colleen Murphy had 14 points and nine rebounds, and sophomore Maddie Sitler added 11 points to lead the Bobcats to a 65-40 victory over Pitt-Bradford.

Junior Shaqouia McCray added nine points and pulled down 11 rebounds in the win for UPG (5-7, 3-4).

Point Park: Junior guard Michelle Burns (Hempfield) scored a game-high 26 points, including four 3-pointers, as the Pioneers (9-7) rallied for a 68-64 victory over Bryant & Stratton (N.Y.). Burns added four rebounds and three assists.

Saint Vincent: Junior Madison Kollar (Latrobe) averaged 21.5 points and 8.0 rebounds in the two-day D3Hoops.com Classic in Las Vegas. She had 24 points, seven rebounds and three steals against Scranton.

Westminster: Sophomore guard Magen Polczynski (Norwin) had 11 points, including two 3-pointers, and junior Ashley Russell (Belle Vernon) had seven points for the Titans (11-2, 4-0 PAC) in a 72-69 win over Washington & Jefferson.

Westmoreland County Community College: Sophomore forward Mackenzie Markle (Latrobe) had 26 points and 12 rebounds as the Wolfpack lost to Penn State DuBois, 88-55.

Men’s basketball

Seton Hill: Freshman Jimmy Moon had a career-high 18 points and 15 rebounds, and senior Nathan Davis had 18 points and four steals to pace the Griffins (2-8, 1-6 PSAC) to a 60-49 victory over Clarion.

Shippensburg: Junior point guard Jake Biss (Latrobe) was named PSAC East Player of the Week. He had 17 points and a career-high 11 assists in a 90-68 victory over Mansfield. He made five 3-pointers in the win, which saw the Raiders make 17 shots from beyond the arc.

Wrestling

Ohio State: Senior 141-pounder Luke Pletcher (Latrobe) scored a 19-4 techincal fall for the seventh-ranked Buckeyes, which proved to be the difference in a 17-16 victory over No. 4 Arizona State.

Pitt: Sophomore Micky Phillippi (Derry) placed third at 133 pounds at the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn. No. 10-ranked Pitt took fourth overall.

Seton Hill: Senior Austin Shaw (Greensburg Salem) is ranked No. 10 in the NWCA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association poll at 149 pounds. Shaw has a 14-5 record with six pins. The Buffalo transfer also is ranked No. 2 in the Super Region I rankings, joining several teammates in the top 3 in that poll.

Senior Alan Diltz is No. 3 at 133, freshman Brandon Matthews is third at 174 and redshirt junior Billy Bowlen is third at 197.

Men’s golf

Notre Dame: Freshman Palmer Jackson (Franklin Regional) tied for eighth at the 54-hole Patriot All-America in Phoenix, Ariz., shooting a 3-under-par 207 capped by a sizzling 65 in the final round. He made seven birdies over his last 18 holes.
