Westmoreland campus clippings: Belle Vernon grad Bailey Parshall reaches strikeout milestone
Penn State senior softball pitcher Bailey Parshall (Belle Vernon) returned from a injury rehab to make a start in the Nittany Lions’ season opener.
She struck out 10 in seven innings and reached 400 career strikeouts as Penn State fell, 2-1, against No. 11 Missouri in eight innings.
She gave up just four hits and walked one, but did not earn a decision.
Softball
Pitt: Freshman Haylie Brunson (Mt. Pleasant) recorded her first college hit and RBI with a run-scoring single, and later scored her first run, as Pitt beat Akron, 10-0, in five innings in Leesburg, Fla. She went 2 for 4.
She carried the momentum over at the Northern Lights Invitational, registering three hits, with a double and another RBI, in a 7-1 win over Eastern Kentucky.
Robert Morris: Senior Dana Vatakis (Monessen) tossed a complete-game four-hitter, striking out eight and walking two as the Colonials blanked North Carolina A&T, 2-0, in eight innings.
Men’s basketball
Robert Morris: Junior 6-foot-11 forward Brandon Stone (Southmoreland) had a season-high 17 points and eight rebounds as the Colonials fell to Oakland, 71-68, to move to 6-19 (4-12 Northeast Conference).
Westmoreland County Community College: The Wolfpack (7-12) reached the WPCC championship but fell to Penn Highlands, 84-80.
Sophomore Jakir Hampton, freshman Brandon Baird and sophomore Joel Lonigro were named to the all-conference team.
Women’s basketball
Grove City: Senior Allison Podkul (Hempfield), her team’s lone senior honored on senior day, had 12 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and five steals to lead the Wolverines to an 86-51 win over Thiel.
Junior guard Megan Kallock (Greensburg Salem) added 14 points in the win.
Pitt-Greensburg: Junior Sidney McCully scored a game-high 26 points, freshman Melina Maietta (Greensburg Central Catholic) added 19 and senior Shaquoia McCray had 10, and 13 rebounds, to power the Bobcats (16-5, 11-3 AMCC) to a 67-64 win at Medaille (N.Y.).
Maietta made five 3-pointers.
Point Park: Grad guard Michelle Burns (Hempfield) had 29 points and five steals, and junior Jordan Yaniga (Franklin Regional) had 14 points as the Pioneers fell to Rio Grande, 99-91.
Saint Vincent: The Bearcats (7-12, 6-9 PAC) made it four wins in five games with a 59-43 over Franciscan. Junior center Ella Marconi led the way with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Taylor Geer had 12 points in the victory.
Seton Hill: Senior Katie Nolan had 17 points and 15 rebounds, and Samantha Kosmacki added 17 points as the Griffins held off Slippery Rock, 56-52, to move to 20-7 overall, 14-4 in the PSAC.
Wrestling
Thiel: Sophomore Frank Gill (Norwin) finished second in the 157-pound bracket at the PAC Championships. The Tomcats won the team title.
Washington & Jefferson: Senior Jaden Datz (Southmoreland) won an individual title at the PAC Championships at 165 pounds. He defeated Seth Evans of Waynesburg in the finals, 14-7, to improve his record to 25-3.
Men’s volleyball
Thiel: Freshman JC Govanucci (Norwin) had nine kills to lead the Tomcats but St. John Fisher won 3-0 in the Fisher Invite.
