West Point girls stay alive; Latrobe, Murrysville sweep District 31 series

Pitcher Lexi Stabiles tossed a two-hit shutout, and Jocelyn Luft smacked a two-run single in the fourth inning to lead West Point to a 2-0 victory against Caln Township on Sunday in the Pennsylvania Little League Softball Major Division state tournament at Wellsboro.

Stabiles struck out 12 and didn’t walk a batter.

Luft collected two hits as West Point stayed alive in the losers’ bracket.

West Point, which dropped a 7-5 decision to Pittston on Friday, will face the loser of the Indiana/Pittston game at 5 p.m. Monday.

District 31 Legion

Latrobe pitcher Tyler Smith allowed one run on three hits, and the Jethawks defeated Hempfield East, 9-1, in Game 2 of the District 31 American Legion semifinals at Pitt-Greensburg on Sunday.

The Jethawks, who won Game 1, 1-0, on Saturday, advance to the championship game Wednesday.

They will play Murrysville for the title. Hempfield East will travel to Bushy Run in the third-place game. All four semifinalists are qualified for the Region 7 tournament in Claysburg beginning Friday.

Latrobe took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and increased its lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning.

The Jethawks put the game away with a five-run sixth inning.

Hempfield East’s run came in the seventh inning.

Erick Batista went 2 for 2 with two RBIs. Smith helped his cause by going 3 for 3, and Cooper Basciano had two hits.

Grayson Willis was tagged with the loss.

Murrysville 2 Bushy Run 1 — Murrysville scored two runs in the first inning and held on to defeat Bushy Run and sweep the best-of-three series.

Max Bernadowski and Cole Brinker reached on hits, and Nolan Boehm and winning pitcher Erik Streussnig drove them in.

Bushy Run scored its run in the fourth inning when Jon Lovre doubled and scored on Ian Temple’s single.

Streussnig and Blake Bertucci limited Bushy Run to two hits.

Brinker had a double and single for Murrysville, and Brody Reese had two hits.
