Weekend College Top 10: Wild wins for Slippery Rock, Grove City

Slippery Rock’s Charles Snorweah ran for a season-high 123 yards and a touchdown in Saturday’s victory over IUP.

Every Monday, the Tribune-Review will highlight 10 top area college performances from the weekend:

1. Slippery Rock football edges IUP in matchup of unbeatens

No. 9 Slippery Rock built a big lead and held off No. 16 IUP, 45-42, in the PSAC on Saturday.

The Rock, who led 17-0 in the first quarter, improved to 6-0, 3-0 with their 12th straight division win. IUP slipped to 5-1, 2-1.

Rutgers transfer Charles Snorweah ran for a season-high 123 yards and a touchdown for Slippery Rock, and Roland Rivers III threw for 180 yards and a 38-yard touchdown to Jermaine Wynn. Rivers added 81 rushing yards and another TD.

The Crimson Hawks’ Quinton Maxwell went 26 of 50 for 360 yards and four touchdowns and also ran for a TD. Dom McNeil caught 10 passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns.

2. Grove City records improbable win vs. Westminster

Josh Ehst scored on a 1-yard QB sneak as time expired as the Wolverines recorded a wild 43-41 victory in the PAC on Saturday.

The TD came two plays after the Titans’ Paul Gonzalez intercepted a pass at the 2-yard line. However, an excessive celebration penalty moved the ball back to the 1, and Westminster fumbled the snap. Grove City cornerback Dan Melville recovered the ball at the 1 with 4 seconds left, setting up Ehst’s TD.

Wolverines junior receiver Cody Gustafson caught six passes for a single-game school-record 211 yards and also became Grove City’s all-time leading receiver with 2,584 yards.

Grove City’s Wesley Schools ran 38 times for 191 yards and four touchdowns.

The Wolverines (4-2, 3-2) also won on a final-second QB sneak last week.

Cole Konieczka threw for 267 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another for Westminster (4-2, 3-2). Tyler Greene ran for a career-high 91 yards and a touchdown.

3. Seton Hill football rallies past Gannon

The Griffins recorded a safety with 48 seconds left to get within two points, then went ahead on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Barabe to Matthew Williams with 17 seconds left for a 25-21 victory Saturday. It was the first victory for new coach Dan Day, whose team is 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the PSAC.

Barabe threw for 250 yards and three TDs.

Gannon fell to 3-3, 1-2.

4. Field goal in OT helps Robert Morris end NEC skid

Nick Bisceglia (Kiski Area) kicked a 38-yard field goal as the Colonials clipped Saint Francis, 20-17, on Saturday for their first Northeast Conference win since 2016, snapping a 14-game streak.

Tim Vecchio (Penn-Trafford) caught six passes for 94 yards and a touchdown for Robert Morris (2-4, 1-0), and Aniello Buzzacco recorded a career-best 17 tackles.

5. Pitt men’s soccer upsets No. 22 Virginia Tech

Valentin Noel, Veljko Petkovic and Edward Kizza scored as the Panthers earned their first victory over the Hokies, a 3-1 triumph Friday night in the ACC.

Pitt improved to 6-4-2 overall and 2-2-1 in conference.

Virginia Tech, which leads the all-time series 5-1-4, dropped to 6-3-2 overall and 0-3-2 in the ACC.

6. No. 3 Pitt volleyball hands Boston College 1st ACC loss

Sabrina Starks had 13 blocks — the third-most in a match in program history — as the Panthers prevailed 25-23, 25-22, 25-23 on Sunday. Chinaza Ndee added 12 kills and a career-high 11 blocks for Pitt (17-1, 6-0). BC slipped to 14-5, 5-1.

7. Mitchell-Caraway combo lifts Cal (Pa.) football

Noah Mitchell threw four touchdowns — three to Derrick Caraway (Woodland Hills) — as the Vulcans downed Clarion, 35-20, in a PSAC game Saturday. Mitchell went 24 of 34 for 331 yards for Cal (4-2, 2-1). Clarion dropped to 3-3, 1-2.

8. Another shutout for unbeaten Pitt-Greensburg soccer

Lauren Yoder made four saves for her 10th shutout, and the Bobcats beat Medaille, 4-0, in an AMCC game Saturday. Ashley Lucas scored her 17th goal for Pitt-Greensburg (13-0, 5-0).

9. Penn State hockey coach earns 300th victory

The No. 13 Nittany Lions defeated Sacred Heart, 5-4, on Saturday to complete a season-opening sweep and give Guy Gadowsky his milestone win.

Brandon Biro had two goals and an assist, and Nate Sucese had a goal and an assist for Penn State.

The Nittany Lions won 8-2 on Friday.

10. Colonials volleyball stays unbeaten in conference

Emma Granger had 13 kills, helping Robert Morris sweep LIU, 25-22, 25-17, 25-21, on Saturday.

Whitney Brown added 39 assists for the Colonials (16-3, 6-0), and Lauren Kolenik contributed 12 kills.
