Weekend College Top 10: IUP men, women get top seeds for NCAA Tournament

Every Monday, the Tribune-Review will highlight 10 top area college performances from the weekend:

1. IUP men roll to 2nd straight PSAC title

Tournament MVP Shawndale Jones finished with a career-high 24 points as the No. 7 Crimson Hawks routed Shippensburg, 77-59, in the conference title game Sunday.

Jones scored 16 straight points in the second half for IUP (28-2). Armoni Foster added 17 points, seven rebounds and four steals.

The Crimson Hawks received the top seed in the NCAA Division II Tournament Atlantic Regional and will host eighth-seeded Winstom-Salem State on Friday. The winner will face fourth-seeded Shippensburg or fifth-seeded Fairmont State.

2. IUP women upset in championship, get top seed

The No. 7 Crimson Hawks shot a season-worst 25% from the field and lost 50-40 to Gannon in the PSAC title game Sunday.

Tournament MVP Tori Obenrader had 17 points and 16 rebounds for the Golden Knights (25-6).

Lexi Griggs scored 16 points for IUP (28-3), which led 18-10 at halftime.

Despite the loss, the Crimson Hawks received the No. 1 seed in the NCAA D-II Tournament Atlantic Regional and will host No. 8 Fayetteville State on Friday. The winner will take on fourth-seeded Bowie State or fifth-seeded Virginia Union.

Gannon earned the second seed and opens against seventh-seeded Cal (Pa.) in Erie.

3. Pitt takes 2nd at ACC championships; 3 wrestlers win titles

Derry graduate Micky Phillippi (133 pounds), Demetrius Thomas (285) and South Park graduate Jake Wentzel (165) won ACC titles Sunday at Petersen Events Center to lead the Panthers to a runner-up finish.

N.C. State won the team title with 81 points, just ahead of Pitt’s 77.

Four other Panthers qualified for the NCAA championships: Taleb Rahmani (second place, 157), Cole Matthews (third, 141), Gregg Harvey (third, 174) and Bethel Park’s Nino Bonaccorsi (third, 184).

4. Grove City men win first NCAA Tournament game in school history

Nate Peters scored 26 points, and the Wolverines shocked host Wooster, 67-52, in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Friday. Grove City lost 84-66 to No. 15 Elmhurst in Saturday’s second round.

Against Wooster, Justice Rice (Monessen) added 10 points, six rebounds and five assists.

In Saturday’s loss, Peters scored 19 points, and James Wells added 16. Both players are seniors.

5. RMU men’s hockey advances to conference quarterfinals

Daniel Mantenuto had a goal and an assist, and Robert Morris defeated Holy Cross, 5-1, on Sunday to win their best-of-three Atlantic Hockey playoff series 2-1.

Justin Kapelmaster finished with 32 saves for the Colonials (13-19-5), who advanced to face Sacred Heart in a best-of-three quarterfinal starting Thursday.

Robert Morris has reached the AHA semifinals in six straight seasons.

6. Penn State wrestlers 4th at Big Ten championships; 7 advance

Senior Mark Hall (174 pounds) and freshman Aaron Brooks (184) won individual titles at the Big Ten championships over the weekend at Rutgers, helping the Nittany Lions place fourth. Iowa won with 157.5 points, followed by Nebraska (132), Ohio State (112) and Penn State (107).

Other Nittany Lions to qualify for the NCAA championships: Roman Bravo-Young (second place, 133), Nick Lee (second, 141), Central Catholic graduate Vincenzo Joseph (second, 165), Shakur Rasheed (fourth, 197) and Hempfield graduate Jarod Verkleeren (ninth, 149).

7. Pitt softball slams Clemson

Sophomore Sarah Seamans hit a pinch-hit grand slam for her first collegiate homer, lifting the Panthers past Clemson, 8-2, on Sunday.

The victory ended the Tigers’ 10-game winning streak.

Brittany Knight threw seven scoreless innings for Pitt (7-11, 2-4 ACC).

Clemson dropped to 18-8, 5-1.

8. Clarion’s Bulsak becomes school’s first MAC wrestling champion

Greg Bulsak (South Park) won the 197-pound title at Sunday’s Mid-American Conference championships to earn a bid to the NCAA championships.

Brock Zacherl also qualified for nationals after finishing second at 149.

9. Mercyhurst tops RMU women for CHA championship

Summer-Rae Dobson scored 4 minutes, 19 seconds into overtime, lifting the Lakers past Robert Morris, 2-1, in the College Hockey America title game Saturday.

The Lakers (21-10-5) earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament and will face top-seeded Cornell (28-2-3) in the quarterfinals at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Michaela Boyle scored for Robert Morris (20-12-4).

10. No. 5 Carnegie Mellon women’s tennis improves to 15-2

The Tartans rolled past McMurray, 9-0, and topped No. 13 Kenyon, 7-2, on Sunday in Orlando, Fla.

Danna Taylor clinched the victory over Kenyon with a 6-4, 6-2 win at first singles. She also teamed with Courtney Ollis for a 6-1 triumph at first doubles against McMurry.

CMU has won six straight.
