Buffalo Bills general manager Doug Whaley walks to the field before an NFL football game against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, Sept. 25, 2016, in Orchard Park, N.Y.

Doug Whaley, a former Pittsburgh Steelers executive, received a second interview for the team’s general manager position, the organization announced Tuesday.

Whaley, 49, also interviewed for the position in March.

The Steelers waited until the conclusion of the NFL Draft to hold a second round of interviews for the position that will be vacated by Kevin Colbert once his successor is found. Colbert, 65, is hoping to take a reduced role within the organization.

Team president Art Rooney II is heading the interview process, and coach Mike Tomlin also is involved in this round of interviews.

Whaley, an Upper St. Clair native and former Pitt player, spent 10 seasons with the Steelers as their team’s pro personnel coordinator. He left the Steelers in 2010 to become assistant general manager with the Buffalo Bills, and he was promoted to general manager in May 2013.

Whaley held that position until he was relieved of his duties April 30, 2017. He currently is a vice president in charge of player personnel for the XFL.

Whaley was one of 16 candidates to receive an interview for the Steelers’ GM position. He is the first to receive a second interview, although NFL Network announced Tennessee Titans vice president of player personnel Ryan Cowden and Tampa Bay Buccaneers vice president of player personnel John Spytek are expected to receive second interviews.
